    Russia doesn’t just export oil, gas, and vodka.

    Roughly three weeks ago the Russian army poured across Russia’s western frontier into Ukraine. As viewed from an agricultural point of view, the world’s largest wheat exporter invaded the world’s fourth-largest wheat exporter.

    Kinda makes those flyover states with their GOP-supporting residents a bit more important, doesn’t it?

    It’s even more interesting when one considers the primary export destination of wheat produced by sanction-crippled Russia:

    In 2010, dry weather across Western Siberia prompted concerns about the Russian wheat crop. In preparation for a poor harvest, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered temporary export limitations for wheat, Russia’s primary agricultural product. Within weeks global wheat prices had doubled; Prices tripled in Russia’s primary export market, the Middle East. Those increases contributed to the series of protests, riots, coups, revolutions and wars we now know collectively as the Arab Spring and the Syrian Civil War.

    Imagine unrest in the Middle East related to food shortages and price escalation, and further disruption of oil production from that region.

    Now imagine the resultant gasoline prices at the end of this summer, from the perspective of a congressional Democrat hoping for re-election.

    If First Vegetable Joe Biden had demonstrated any spine during his first year, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine. If Vice President Joe Biden had turned his drug-addicted, philandering, corrupt son over to the DOJ back when even Team Obama was warning everyone about being associated with the POS, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine.

    King County Metro has put the first of their slow charge battery electric busses in service, on what will probably be the most challenging routes for battery busses on the system. A couple RapidRide routes are planned to go under wire.The city’s transportation master plan talks of new route options based on wire extensions.

    Rt48 being a trolleybus route will undo a mistake Seattle Transit did when converting from Rails to Rubber, At first Streetcar Route 23-23rd Ave S became a motor bus route but eliminated to help with wartime traffic to defense plants, That gap wasn’t plugged until 1966 with the 48 as Seattle Transit bowing to pressure from activists in the Central District. At the time, Seattle Transit didn’t believe in crosstown routes, as most routes radiated through Downtown, or were a shuttle connection with a Downtown bound bus,Today the 48 is one of Metros busiest routes. It’s just two gaps in the wire that need to be plugged, with two new substations added.

    Another CD/Rainier Valley route that is a candidate for electrification, is Rt 8 Seattle Center-Capitol Hill-Mt. Baker TC, already has substantial portions under wire, but the gaps are bigger. Originally a crosstown shuttle, the portion along MLK Jr Way was added in the 90s after neighborhood complaints. I remember the petition drive outside the hardware store that had been Sick’s Stadium.

    If Metro went with In Motion Charging, off wire running could add even more mileage to the network.

    It seems clear, from news reports, that Russian troops committed an atrocity there. But what is the scope of the atrocity?

    The Santa Monica Observer says, “Russians rounded up military age men in a town of 28,000 and shot them in the streets. 7,000 of the towns men were in that age group.” However, that sources adds, “It should be emphasized at this time, that no one has confirmed the number of dead.”

    We know Russia is fighting this war with conscripts. We know Russian conscripts receive very little training, and the conscripts thrown into this war have no combat experience. We know Russian troops, especially conscript troops, are taking a terrible beating in Ukraine. This probably was done by low-quality and poorly commanded troops to avenge their fallen buddies, as opposed to an action by the Russian government ordered from the Kremlin, although we can’t be sure — Putin might do something like this. And these 20 men may well have been “all [the] men aged 16-60 left in Bucha” at the time the Russian troops pulled out.

    We should also keep in mind that the Ukraine government has declared all men aged 16-60 liable for military service and prevented them from leaving the country. And there’s been much talk of Ukrainians waging guerilla war against Russian occupiers. So it’s possible, indeed probably, that Russian troops consider all Ukrainian men aged 16-60 as combatants.

    I’m not defending this. I’m not defending the Russians (I leave that to Trump, Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard, Fox News, and many of the Republicans you know). This is an atrocity, a war crime, it’s inexcusable, and those responsible should be brought to justice.

    And the Santa Monica Observer suggests there may be many more, not limited to Bucha, but “all over the suburbs of Kyiv.”

    I think the Senate committee vote on KBJ clearly establishes the Republican intentions going forward, if there were any doubts.

    Republicans will oppose all Supreme Court nominees put forward by any Democrat in the White House no matter how well qualified.     Admittedly not my thing. And undeniably complex.
    But here goes.

    Ages ago when I was still in high school I dated a girl whose older brother was a West Point grad, Oxford grad, and had been a tank commander in “West” Germany (she was undeniably an unexpected “blessing” to her “older” parents). He was a cool guy, somewhat protective of his baby sister, but he unwisely decided my intentions were honorable (they most certainly were not).

    And over a long weekend getting to know him he tried his best to fill in for me the tactical concepts underlying NATO doctrine at that time. I think he was trying to sell me on a career (hard eye-roll here). So he laid it on thick and made it all sound really cool. The coordination in real time between attack helo units and tank units supported by infrantry either defending or attacking an objective all being overseen by satellite and AWACS theater electronic awareness sounded very impressive.

    But the operating assumption at the time and for a long time thereafter so far as I know, was that the opponent they faced was equally well prepared and equipped, if not more so. So I can’t help but admit I feel a little cheated to see Russia’s best mobile artillery columns being defeated by guys driving out to a ditch and blowing the shit out of them with shoulder fired smart rockets. Or dug in positions of Russian armor being incinerated by spotter drones feeding targeting data into linked rocket batteries.

    Russian armor isn’t shit. Russian artillery isn’t shit. Maybe the entire concept isn’t shit. We poured trillions into hardening NATO against an opponent who maybe never existed, but certainly probably hasn’t existed for a couple of decades. We better wise up. Smart rockets and missiles are here now. UAVs are here now. If they can find you they can kill you.
