Meanwhile, some GOP senators think there’s $250 billion to $1 trillion of “wasteful spending” they can cut to pay for Trump’s Iran war and his request for a 50% defense spending increase.

Looking at current federal spending, it appears they’re planning to renege on debt interest, which is about $1 trillion a year.

    https://www.trains.com/pro/freight/class-i/high-diesel-fuel-prices-continue-to-send-freight-to-rail-norfolk-southern-executives-say/

This could be short lived, whether they get their merger or not. If Diesel prices drop, some of that traffic returns to trucks, and only LTL the railroads will carry is Coast to Coast LTL traffic that carriers may put on rail to avoid the trucks using too much diesel. LTL used to be LCL, or Less than Car Load, and while some LTL loads still rely on dozens from origin to destination, it was even more labor intensive with railroads.

Electrification will still be off the table for Class Is. BNSF alone keeps raising the price goalposts, although $10 per gallon doesn’t seem far way now, that’s just one hurdle. The railroads still have to pay property tax on infrastructure, and while states could be proactive with exemptions, that is easier said than done.

Besides the last of tge operayors on the I-5 corridor between Olympia and the 49th not covered, Island Transit, a few of the Eastern Washington operators have been added, already had Spokane and Pullman, but has now added Ben Franklin, Yakima, and LINK. The latter is one I have been waiting for. On the By fuel stat, Electrics are beating diesel, latter relegated to mainly Wenatchee-Manson, and Wenatchee-Leavenworth. Leavenworth Local is covered by a Battery along with local routes radiating out of the Wenatchees’. Saw them pushing a battery on the Chelan-Manson route, but that block schedule was only two trips. Charging is done via inductive chargers at hubs in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee, and the transfer center in Leavenworth. Only problem is they are former BYD.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday the Trump administration will temporarily increase how long gas and diesel truck drivers can drive, as fuel costs remain elevated amid the Iran war.

Under the 90-day waiver from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truck drivers hauling gasoline and diesel can drive for up to 16 hours within a 24-hour window — an increase from the 14-hour limit under normal conditions. The waiver took effect on Wednesday and expires on Dec. 16.

    https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/6095013-trump-administration-gas-diesel-truck-drivers-hours/

Window dressing at the expense of safety. Tell me how this lowers gas or diesel pump prices, or increases supply. It seems totally pointless to me, beyond a cheap PR stunt.

Or is there a driver shortage because of shitty wages? If that’s the case, raise wages. Oh wait, that would cut into trucking firm profits, so can’t do that. Gotta make the drivers they have work longer hours.

Never mind if a driver hauling a load of gasoline falls asleep at the wheel and crashes into a school bus. As long as he isn’t wearing a turban.

Joseph Moore had wanted to be a police officer since he was a teenager. Last year, after a career marked by setbacks, he believed he had found a fresh start as a deportation officer with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. …

Moore, a 38-year-old Marine reservist and father of two, died on 28 August 2026 outside ICE’s Philadelphia field office after the agency told him he would lose his job … from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The case … has drawn scrutiny to how ICE recruited tens of thousands of officers during a hiring surge last year, then began quietly dismissing some of them over background problems that former officials say should have been caught before anyone was sworn in.

ICE told Moore in late August to report to its Philadelphia office to be dismissed, according to federal officials. He had fought to keep jobs in the past, but he went to the office as instructed.

    (From link @50)

What this shows is ICE will hire literally anybody. If this guy wanted to be a cop since his teens, but was getting his first LE job at age 38, after a succession of job failures, and then ICE — after getting a better look at him — decided he wasn’t even up to their nonexistent standards and shouldn’t have been hired in the first place … well, like I said, it proves there’s no screening, no background checking, they’re hiring anybody who walks in the door. At least this dude exited ICE before he unalived some innocent citizen (as far as we know).

@59 So, wait a minute, nothing in the waiver orders drivers to slow down. You made that up.

As for your second claim that “saving a hotel night here and there” will lower trip costs and therefore pump prices, (a) interstate trucks have sleeper cabs so where is the hotel cost savings, (b) any such cost savings are negligible in relation to a tanker load of gas or diesel, and (c) you’re assuming the trucking company not the driver would realize any such savings, and would pass them on to fuel buyers, who would pass them on to retail buyers. You not only made this up, you pulled it out of your ass.

It’s also worth noting the waiver makes no finding as such of “equivalent safety” but rather simply assumes sleepier drivers are just as safe. Two other notable features of this waiver are (a) it allows drivers to self-report that they’re too sleepy to drive, and (b) requires expedited reporting of crashes (does this mean the waiver anticipates crashes resulting from the policy change? sure looks like it).

Your spew @59 is right up there with your Apple stock math.

    FWIW,

Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed holds a slight lead over his opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a new poll shows.

The Hill/Emerson College Polling survey released Thursday found that El-Sayed garnered 48 percent support and Rogers received 46 percent, while 4 percent of respondents remained undecided and 2 percent chose another candidate in the race to succeed outgoing Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.).

    https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/6093219-el-sayed-rogers-michigan-senate-poll/

At the very least, this poll suggests El-Sayed isn’t a disaster candidate for the Dems; the best the GOP can hope for in this race is to maybe pull off a squeaker.

    That’ll leave a mark.

Detroit News endorsement for U.S. Senator from Michigan
    The Editorial BoardThe Detroit News

Mike Rogers is the prototype of a United States Senator.

He spent 14 years in the House of Representatives, rising to chair of the vital Intelligence Committee. The 63-year-old Republican left Congress at the end of 2014, having been elected to his House seat seven times by his mid-Michigan constituents. Rogers then embarked on a successful career in private industry, becoming an expert in cybersecurity.

He’s also served his country as an officer in the U. S. Army and as an FBI agent assigned to the organized crime division. He is mature, trustworthy and more than prepared to sit at the table with national and world leaders.

Rogers’ experience, clear thinking, and temperament are bound to quickly vault him into the Senate’s leadership ranks should he prevail in the Nov. 3 election.

By contrast, his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, has a thin career background that contains little to recommend him for one of the nation’s most powerful leadership jobs.
    …
There is a bigger concern about El-Sayed: He has worked so hard covering his tracks leading up to this Senate race that it’s impossible to know who he really is or where he would stand in the Senate.
    …
Mike Rogers is clearly the best choice for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat.

It has never endorsed a Democratic candidate for president, and has only failed to endorse a Republican presidential candidate six times: twice during the Franklin D. Roosevelt era; in 2004, when it did not endorse George W. Bush for re-election; in 2016, when it endorsed Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson rather than Republican nominee Donald Trump and in 2020 and 2024, when it continued to withhold its endorsement from Trump and did not endorse a candidate

@60 You make them work more so that they will still qualify for those bennies, and in doing so they earn more and are no longer impoverished according to the government standard.

Oh look, the dumbfuck troll wants children, elderly, and disabled people to “earn more [so they] are no longer impoverished.”

Several entries report that households containing these vulnerable groups account for around 79% of SNAP households and 83–86% of SNAP benefits, a depiction that frames SNAP primarily as a program serving minors, seniors, and people with disabilities rather than predominantly able-bodied working adults. These figures come from USDA and NGO analyses

    https://factually.co/fact-checks/health/snap-recipients-children-elderly-disabled-working-age-stats-b14df4

Clearly, the troll has no dumbfucking clue who benefits from social safety net programs are. (Clue: the most vulnerable members of society.)

As for the other 31%, ie. work-capable adults, many of them are already employed. And as I’ve said before, programs like Medicaid, food stamps, housing subsidies, and child care assistance subsidize the labor costs of low-wage employers. They can work for the Republican Minimum Wage™ only because the government is providing half their subsistence. If that goes away, these workers will demand pay increases to bridge the gap between their earned income and basic needs, and if employers don’t pay up those workers will go away, because they can’t live on half of minimum subsistence. This isn’t a question of poverty, it’s a question of survival.

The troll is really covering himself in dumbfuckery today.

    News | University
Tufts students react to the departure of Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora professor after allegations of academic dishonesty
Kerri K. Greenidge no longer works at Tufts following an investigation into her most recent book, alleging factual errors and misattributions.

The book, which received initial praise and several awards, describes the life and activism of an abolitionist family across the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. However, Greenidge faced increasing scrutiny in 2024 when Myra C. Glenn, a retired professor of American history at Elmira College, decided to investigate Greenidge’s sources. Her investigation, fueled by doubts about several of Greenidge’s references and citations, found several factual errors and missing attributions.

According to a statement from Patrick Collins, executive director of media relations at Tufts, the university was made aware of allegations that Greenidge’s work “contained multiple errors of fact and failed to give appropriate credit to the work of another” in 2022. The university then began a peer review process led by external academics, who concluded that there were issues with the evidence and citations listed in the book and reported their findings to W.W. Norton, the publisher of “The Grimkes.”

W.W. Norton has since removed “The Grimkes” from its website.

Sometimes the race card – like love – just ain’t enough:

Greenidge herself argued that her race was the reason for the increased visibility of this incident, which has been reported on by the Times and the New York Post as well as discussed by opinion sections in the Boston Globe and several blogs.
