    McInturff acknowledged the challenges for the GOP posed by the political environment, even as the party’s geographic advantages keep Democrats fighting on their turf.

    “The issue environment is tilting substantially towards the Democrats,” McInturff said.

    A good question, Cruising! The education system went from teaching pre-calculus and Greek in high school to teaching remedial math and reading in colleges and universities. What is the problem?

    Is it bad raw material? That is, is it the kids are just getting dumber?

    Is is the teaching profession? I’ve noticed the educators are more interested in the educators’ pay and benefit packages than they are in producing a good, quality product.

  51. @48 I take it you tried to get a public sector job, but your credentials weren’t up to par, so you failed to break out of your burger-flipping rut. (Nearly all public sector jobs require a degree, if not an advanced degree.) At least that’s what your comment says to me.

    People don’t go into teaching or other public employment for the pay, though the benefits tend to be somewhat better than in the private sector by way of partial compensation, however benefits have eroded across the board. People who’ve never worked in the public sector like to think it’s a comfy sinecure, but it’s anything but that: Underpaid and overworked is more like it. I speak from actual experience.

  56. Tough part yesterday while in Bellingham was choosing to ride WTA75B, the every two hour service from Bellingham Station to Blaine via Ferndale, and Birch Bay. After riding it, I can see why it has that frequency. If Metro runs routes to its outlying areas at a frequency of every 90 minutes or so, WTA has less resources so I can see providing the connection being more important than frequency. Both have been doing various forms of alternate service delivery for areas in their territory that don’t justify frequent fixed route service.

    Interesting part of the 75B. Return trip to Blaine is quicker, misses most of the Flex service zone and the Birch Bay shore and uses I-5 back to Ferndale and Bellingham. Had a lot of timetable anxiety with the County Connectors of Skagit Transit, Island Transit, and WTA on the way home. 5:15 trip of 80X out of Bellingham was the last to connect to a southbound 90X out of Mount Vernon. 6:15, and I would have had to use the Island Transit bus to Stanwood. Hate using a fare free system if I don’t have the time or ability to get a bite to eat or a soda.(sales tax).

    Metro, Sound Transit, and the other bus/rail operators of the ORCA Network should take a pointer from Skagit Transit and WTA on fares. Not reduce them, but the concept of Fare Capping. WTA is $2, three rides and you hit the $6 cap, remaining trips for the day are free. Supposedly WTA doesn’t accept Skagit Transit rides towards the cap now, but may make the 90x an exception.
