Wow. I guess voters aren’t quite as stupid as Karl Rove took them for, after all:
Public allegiance to the Republican Party has plunged since the second year of George W. Bush’s presidency, as attitudes have edged away from some of the conservative values that fueled GOP political dominance for more than a decade, a new survey has found.
The survey, by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center for People and the Press, found a “dramatic shift” in political-party identification since 2002, when Republicans and Democrats were at rough parity. Now, half of those surveyed identified with or leaned toward Democrats, while 35 percent aligned with Republicans.
What’s more, the survey found the public attitudes are drifting toward Democrats’ values: Support for government aid to the disadvantaged has grown since the mid-1990s, skepticism about the use of military force has increased and support for traditional family values has edged down.
Rove is reportedly fond of William McKinley, but when it comes to political realignments, I think the Republican presidency George W. Bush will most closely be compared to is that of Herbert Hoover.
UPDATE:
Andrew Sullivan agrees:
It’s a devastating indictment of the Bush-Rove strategy for conservatism and the Republican party. They may have created the most loyally Democratic generation since the New Deal with the under 25s. […] It turns out that Karl Rove has gone a long way toward securing a permanent majority in American politics … for liberals and Democrats. The collapse of a coherent, freedom-loving, reality-based conservatism is surely part of the reason.
Steve Zemke MajorityRulesBlog spews:
The Republican Party of Bush/Cheney/Rove represents the moneyed and corporate interests of America. Their goal has been to keep all they have and get as much more as they can.
Most people can only be fooled for so long. It’s surprising that 35% would still errorously consider the current corporate power structure set up in DC under Bush as somehow being in their interest.

Cheap Labor Conservatism and Family Values (e.g., stay at home moms) are two concepts that are at total loggerheads. The right wing compartmentalized authoritarian mindset, however, is easily able to hold disparate, clashing notions. The important thing for WingNutz(tm) is the “authority” of the ideas source rather than the value or correctness of the idea.
All WingNutz(tm) mental effort is spent on justification — not logical reasoning. Hence, we still have 1/3 of the populace unable to see reason.

Hey, Goldy. Don’t put down President Hoover that way. The man was honest, made his fortune by being hard-working and diligent, spent time and money trying to help the poor and was philosophically opposed to war. In his campaign against Al Smith, he refused to go along with those that would use Mr. Smith’s religion (Catholics were not popular at the time) as a campaign issue, and actively repudiated any Republican that tried.
His efforts to combat the great depression failed, but he did try honestly, and the depression itself wasn’t his fault.
So, to summarize:
Hoover – honest, hard-working, unwilling to use lies and prejudice in his campaign, opposed war, active in charitable efforts.
Bush – None of the above.

Well, duhhhhh. . .
Look at the 2006 elections and the sea change of power in the House and Senate.
2008 Republicans have to defend 21 seats vs. 12 for the Dems in the Senate.
2010 Republicans have to defend 19 seats vs. 15 for the Dems.
The 2004 elections was the “make or break” moment for the conservative movement. Had the Republican “walked their talk” about holding the military in high esteem, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, following the Rule of Law, and avoiding corruption and hypocricacy they would be in control now. But, since the Culture of Corruption mindset is so pervasive they continued breaking the laws and trust of this country.
The dramatic shift in loyalty stems from the deep sense of pride many conservatives hold for the military. It’s more than apparent that the Bush administration has abused our military to the breaking point and their base will not forgive them for that. Couple that with scandals that the base may have turned a blind eye to and you have a disappointed voting block.
Given the fact that they have so many seats to defend in the Senate between 2008 & 2010, it appears the Republican reign in Congress is over for another 4 decades, perhaps longer.

You are smart enough to realize that, right?
See, when the government isn’t raising enough revenue from taxing, it borrows money from foreign countries like China. What Bush is really doing is giving a tax deferment.
The federal government borrows money by selling Treasury Bills which come due decades from now. So the “tax cut” today is really nothing more than a sham to pass along a tax increase to future generations of Americans.

Comparing Bush Jr. to Herbert Hoover is an insult to Hoover.
While we usually remember Hoover for presiding haplessly and hopelessly over the Depression, he was also an accomplished businessman and engineer who came to national prominence by getting New Orleans dried out the last time it was dunked under several feet of water.
Of course, when presented with the Depression, Hoover’s technical skills ran out on him, and his empathy for other people’s suffering never existed in the first place.
A lifetime of good work was undone by 3 years of inability to deal with a major economic crisis.
Bush peres has sometimes compared himself to Herbert Hoover, which may be apt.

On the trip to their new life in Southern California, they ran out of gas. At a gas station in Bakersfield, Pop talked the station attendant into accepting a thermos bottle in exchange for 2 gallons of gas. That was the second best stroke of luck he had had in six months. North Korea did not have nuclear grade material until 2 YEARS after President Clinton left office. The North Koreans threatened the Bush administration that they were gong to kick out the IAEA, break the seals, get rid of the monitoring devices, enrich uranium, make a nuclear bomb and detonate it. All on Bush’s watch. This is Bush’s problem. He failed to be the leader. He failed using diplomacy. This is another Republican debacle, pure and simple.

I’ve done a long spiel on NK at least once here, and don’t want to repeat it. Google the archives if you’re curious. The two sentence condensation is that it’s a nasty country that nobody wants. The only thing the local powers (China, Russia, Japan, SK) fear more than an aggressive nuclear-armed North Korea is a collapsed North Korea with millions of starving people streaming for the borders and bobbing to Japan on boats.
Consequently, the only way to deal with NK is a constant regimen of sticks and carrots while prodding the leadership to reform their economy enough so that the place doesn’t fall apart completely. A regime change solution is something nobody wants.

The ideas they have are “received” not “conceived”. The trustworthiness of the authority figure propounding the idea is all important to them, not the quality of the idea or the reasoning process engaged to arrive at it.
To us, it’s hilarious that they solemnly quote Rush and gather their :news” from the Drudge report, but in their own tiny minds, it all makes sense.

Quote Rush? You can look at my cache and you won’t find Rush Limbaugh visitations. His site isn’t even in the favorites list. I don’t need Rush to tell me how to think. But I know beyond the shadow of a doubt you visit Kos, Moore, Media Matters, Think Progress, and other sites to get your daily marching orders.
YOU are so dense I use WaPo, LaT and NYT to make many of my points. I have ventured into the den of thieves (libtard) web sites to make my points.
None of you can answer how many bad apples we’ve caught so far!
You all are itching for an attack on the magnitude of the “show 24” blast so you can ridicule Bush. Only one of you said no to that so we know where the real hatred is.
Today’s vote proved the holier than though crap is exactly that. You are a lying sack of shits and the American people can see that in today’s vote.
You put pork above the soldier.
You put pork above the soldier’s protection.
You put pork above the soldier’s family.
You don’t give a RAT’S ASS about the soldier in Iraq!
Puddybud spews:
I love how clueless says it’s okay to stuff pork in a defense appropriations bill. I thought when Nancy PElosi came in she said “The era of pork barrel politics is dead”. Ain’t she the blatant liar all libtards are?
So YOS LIB BRO, you decried it so loudly about pork barrel politics… but wait, that’s when you were still Clueless and thought LBBTNDP was a Bush lover. Now your side proved again it is a bunch of hypocrits!
So Moonbat!s when the American people come home from work and see what your elected leaders did today “BF’ing the troops, they’ll be so glad they voted for you donkocrapts!

Actually, Puddybud, while I consider Mr. Foley to be a scumbag (gay has nothing to do with it), the larger problem was the House leadership avoiding their responsibilities towards the pages.
There was a bi-partisan group that was tasked with overseeing the page system, but they decided not to bother telling the Democratic member about the problems they had heard about, because some embarassing information might come out.
At this point, those folks are no longer in positions of any real authority, so the problem has been mostly solved by the voters. My understanding is that there is still an ongoing investigation, but as there is considerable confusion as to which jurisdiction has authority, there may not be a criminal prosecution.
My comments were a response to RightStuff, who posted a link to a story about a South Dakota State rep and an allegation of improper behavior with an 18 year old, and the Mayor of San Francisco that seems to have been involved in a mutually consensual affair with the wife of aide.
Some folks on your side are having to really dig deep to find scandals to bring up as comparisons to the many scandals that the Republicans are involved with.
Puddybud spews:
GBS: You are a history buff.
Look at what the appeasers called Sir Winston Churchill in the 1930s.
Look up what happened when Neville Chamberlain appeased Adolf Hitler.
Look at what happend when the appeasers got Hitler all wrong.
Who did they call for? Nooooo really.
Look at who led Britain to victory.
After the war look at what the “lost appeasers” said about Sir Winston Churchill!
Puddybud spews:
Good try John Barell. You used Mark Foley as your anit-cause celebre. If all the truth is not told then it’s not a fully truthful story.
The GAY SCUMBAG AKA Mark Foley, got what he deserved. But it’s not about jurisdictions, that is a smoke screen your side is using. Brian Ross would have said other wise. ABC News is just a little higher than SEE BS News and they wanted to call the story the other way. I posted his last entry on the subject. Even the FBI said no laws were broken.
Dream on John!

For all you libtard Fascists out there, look at what Hitler did before he took the Jews to the camps.

MANY DEMS WERE ELECTED IN TOUGH RED DISTRICTS AND THE PEOPLE THERE HAVE HAD THEIR NEEDS PUT ON HOLD WHILE DUBYA CARRIED ON WITH HIS DISASTER. SO OF COURSE THOSE DEMS WANT TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE THEM A CHANCE. YOU’RE TOO STUPID TO SEE THAT.
IF THE CHIMPANZEE VETOES THE BILL THEN IT’S HE WHO WILL ENDANGER THE TROOPS. IT’S BEEN ALL HIM ALL ALONG WHO’S PUT OVER 3000 SOLDIERS TO DEATH, AND MAIMED MANY, MANY MORE NOT TO MENTION THOUSANDS OF IRAQIS WHO HATE US NOW – ALL OF IT TO GET RE-ELECTED.
THE CHIMPANZEE YOU VOTED FOR TWICE IS A MASS-MURDERER, A HARAVESTER OF DEATH AND PAIN AND DESPAIR AND YOU LOVE HIM FOR IT.

John Barelli spews:
Ah, the new battle cry of the Republicans:
“But no laws were broken”
While there are already a number of scandals where that statement has been proven false, even where it is true (and it often isn’t), it seems a very flimsy excuse.
Lies to the public leading to war – “But no laws were broken”
US Attorneys fired for refusing to put party loyalty ahead of justice – “But no laws were broken”
Making lists of likely Democratic voters on assignment overseas with the military – “But no laws were broken”
Threatening letters and posters to Latino US citizens – “But no laws were broken”
A married, 52 year old Representative that heads the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children sending suggestive e-mails to a 16 year old page – “But no laws were broken”
Oddly enough, you folks don’t seem to see it the same way when a Democrat is in the spotlight. For example, you keep bringing up Rep Frank:
as a comparison, “But no laws were broken” and the House (including the Democrats) voted to censure him anyway. (Appropriate, as he may not have broken any laws, but he used incredibly bad judgement.)
So, Puddybud, you folks keep on chanting that “But no laws were broken” mantra, and those among you for whom that statement is true can visit the rest of you over in Club Fed.

Thank GOD Democratic MEN were present during the formation of America during her greatest battle for survival. That proves God loves and trust men who are Democrats to defend the homeland and our women.
The battle cry for Demlocrats is “Come on MEN!! You too, Republicans.”
Republicans say “I have other priorities besides military service.” Or, “Daaaaa-ddddd-yyyyyyy, can you get me in the Champagne unit of the Texas Air National Guard?”
Let me ask you serious question; who led England and the Allies to victory?

Ex-aide to Gonzales agrees to testify
Sampson exchanged e-mails about firings of federal prosecutors
WASHINGTON – The former top aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales agreed Friday to testify at a Senate inquiry next week into the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year.
Kyle Sampson, who resigned last week amid the furor over the dismissals, will appear Thursday at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, his attorney said. His appearance will mark the first congressional testimony by a Justice Department aide since the release of thousands of documents that show the firings were orchestrated, in part, by the White House.

My, ohhhhh, myyyyyy! The fall from grace is about to happen, folks. This is the guy who holds all the secrets and we’re going to get SWORN testimony that is going to implicate Rove.
If the testimony indicates the possibility of a crime on the part of Rove, Miers, or Gonzo, Katie-bar-the-door we gonna have us an ol’ fashion impeachment.
For those of you who haven’t read the Constituion, Art.II Powers of the Executive, presidential pardons are expressely forbidden in matters of impeachment.
Oh, my.

The only thing that can save keep the Republican Party relevant is if true Republicans stand up to these criminals right NOW.
Personally, I hope they fight it all the way, and people like Tom DeLay keep spewing their shit. Bottom line Americans are tired of the bullshit and it is going to stop one way or the other. Either accountability, Impeachment or elections. If it’s the latter, oh shiiiiiit you’re going to be retired by the time you see the ass-clown Republicans running congress again.
Or, you could vote Libertarian.

Yes, Puddybud, I read it, and replied that he was simply a scumbag. Gay didn’t enter into it.
In a later post, I also wrote some related information, aimed primarily at the new mantra from the right that you repeated in your post. You remember “but no laws were broken“.
I find it very amusing how often we’re hearing that little phrase from Republicans. Often it seems that they take one small part of the entire situation and claim that since no law was broken at that particular point, that everything is ok, and that we’re just picking on you poor, beleaguered Republicans.
Example – in the whole US attorney flailex that we’re currently enjoying, the President has the right to fire political appointees unless he is doing so in an effort to subvert the justice system. That’s a pretty important “unless”, but there’s more.
His Cabinet members also do not have the right to lie under oath to Congress about the matter.
So, “no laws were broken” in any firing that was done unless the firings were done to punish the US Attorney for putting his duties ahead of party loyalty.
And if someone lied under oath to Congress, then the person that testified falsely did break the law, even if the firings themselves were perfectly legal.

Wrong.
He seems bright enough, but NOT so bright so as to change parties and politics for his own survival.
Hot house activist, getting paid to pretend the gay movement which he somehow speaks for, has a lot of conservatives from big cities.
Wrong.
A few years back he was outed as a bare backing fan, getting fucked without condoms. Since he admits to being HIV positive, that did not settle well. Bad, bad, bad and from an educated city fellow, very academic, not a trailer park rube. Bad, bad, bad.
