by Darryl — Tuesday, 7/28/26, 4:54 pm

DLBottleYou know that ballot sitting in that pile of mail over there? Today would be a great day to fill it out and drop it off in a ballot drop box near you. Then, stop by the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally for an evening of politics and good cheer over a drink.

We meet tonight and every Tuesday at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. You’ll find us out on the rear deck starting about 8:00pm.

Chapters of Living Liberally are all over the place…if you can’t make it to the Seattle chapter, stop by another chapter near you.

Fauci Asks China To Engineer New Virus That Just Kills Rand Paul

Fauci reportedly explained to the Chinese scientists that he could certainly stomach collateral damage, but that the entire design of the virus should be explicitly constructed to kill just one human: Rand Paul.

“If you could do that, that would be great,” said Fauci. “The virus needs to specifically target white males with that weird kind of half wavy, half curly hair type. It’s got to kill doctors who have a modest libertarian flair, someone prone to drama. Oh, and can you put a rush on this? I’m kind of working under a tight schedule here.”

One of the estimates from Jonathan Cervas, a redistricting and apportionment expert at Carnegie Mellon University, shows seat changes across the map, with Florida and Texas gaining four seats each, while California, New York and Illinois collectively lose eight.

Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Utah and Idaho would all pick up one more seat, while Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island lose one seat.

Another map from the GOP-aligned American Redistricting Project shows less seats shifting overall, with Texas gaining four seats, Florida gaining two, and Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Utah and Idaho gaining one. Under that estimate, California loses four seats, and New York, Illinois, Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island all lose one seat.

Don’t think battery-diesel hybrid locomotives are good for long distance passenger trains, but more interesting is that Stadler already has a North American factory, and is being expanded. That was built to satisfy Buy America rules, so sooner or later one would be set up in Canada for Canadian content rules that are becoming more stringent. For now the Montreal facility being built will be for building and maintaining this new locomotive fleet. Stadler’s current North American flagship, the FLIRT multiple unit(available in a variety of propulsion options), would be great to replace the remaining Budd RDC route, and maybe on a few of the services cut by VIA in 1990.

One of the routes the new Stadler’s locomotives will be used on is the Toronto-Vancouver Canadian. Since there is a good chance these locos will be used during the transition to newer coaches and sleepers, don’t know if a battery-diesel hybrid can pull the current Canadian. It sometimes gets to be 20-30 cars long. There was talk of a joint procurement with Amtrak to replace the long distance fleet, but VIA wants to keep the things that make this transcontinental flagship what it is, like Open sections in the sleeper(the economy option), and the Dome Cars. Also, the protectionist rules on both sides of the border, but Amtrak already had solved one barrier to a joint LD Replacement strategy, all Amtrak long distance trains will be single level, although that will affect the Empire Builder and the Spokane Shuffle where the Portland and Seattle sections split/merge.

@57 Blanche’s AG nom is in trouble? Good!

It’s hung up on Cornyn’s and Tillis’s concerns that Trump’s $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded payout to Jan. 6 rioters could spring back to life. And, it doesn’t look like this will be quickly resolved:

A “no” vote from either Republican … could have doomed the nomination in committee. … Blanche’s nomination … appeared increasingly precarious as the day wore on. As late as 7 p.m. Wednesday, an increasingly frustrated-seeming Cornyn told reporters that the DOJ had “stonewalled” his request, which he’d been making for months. “They’ve simply refused to cooperate,” Cornyn said.

Blanche’s refusal to kill the scheme, and months of stonewalling and non-cooperation can mean only one thing: If he’s confirmed it will rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of lies and broken pledges.

Of course, there are other reasons — plenty of reasons — to scuttle this sack of shit’s nomination. Cornyn and Tillis aren’t heroes for only making it contingent on killing Trump’s Rioter Rewards Program™, which ought to be a no-brainer for every senator of both parties.

But if this is what eighty-sixes Blanche’s nomination, it’ll do.

And it isn’t just investors growing leery of AI data center spending (and financing); of the three major stock indexes, the tech-lite DJIA took the biggest plunge of all. This is a likely culprit:

Florida’s pipsqueak AG says he’s going to investigate Fauci. And,

Florida Sen. Ashley Moody (R), a member of the committee, said Fauci’s refusal to answer questions was “incredibly frustrating” and “tragic” for the country.

“Everything we did to keep Washington out of our lives in Florida, which made Florida the free state, that was really on trial today, and he couldn’t answer a question because he took the Fifth every time. Very frustrating,” Moody told host Bill Melugin on Fox News’s “America Reports.”

What she’s really mad about is that public health authorities tried to save lives, including hers, by implementing best practices for dealing with a deadly, highly-contagious disease for which no vaccine or cure existed at the time.

Moody, whose background is accounting and law, has no qualifications whatsoever to pass judgment on responses to a global health crisis. And because of ignoramuses like her, a lot of people died completely unnecessarily.

From what I’ve heard, haven’t looked into it much at all really, the magat narrative about The Odyssey is that it is woke, woke, woke, woke and based on a translation from the ancient Greek that’s slammed by magatry as “feminist”..

Well, guess what, the “feminist” translator of The Odyssey doesn’t think much of Nolan’s film:

Nolan’s Odyssey lacks many of the elements that make the poem great. It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, war, or about the relationship between one warrior’s glorious return and the lives of his family, adversaries, comrades, friends and neighbours. It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible…

    However, Wilson ends her essay:

Despite all this, the release of The Odyssey is still an event to celebrate. In what we are told is the streaming era, this epic is bringing audiences back to cinemas. In what we are told is a time of declining literacy and the ‘death of the humanities’, translations of The Odyssey, including mine, are flying off the shelves. Some of those who buy the book or show up in cinemas to watch Tom Holland may go on to study ancient Greek. Perhaps the film will persuade a few college administrators not to cut their literature, language and history departments. Nolan, who studied English at University College London – where students still study The Odyssey as a first year ‘foundational text’ – is doing his best to get the general public reading again, and I am grateful.

    https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/n14/emily-wilson/an-uncomplicated-man

Whoa, well, well, scholar Emily Wilson says this Hollywood flick needs more sex. I’ll all for that. Good on Dr. Wilson.

That aside, I wanted to be impressed by The Odyssey and now I’m afraid I’ll be let down as I was by Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer was involving enough but was at the end, just meh for me.

A sci-fi pundit on youtube said that Nolan needs his brother Jonathan’s input on the script to do his best work. By himself, the results are mixed.

I’ll see it anyway on the best screen for it in Seattle. I’m sure it will be enjoyable if a bit of a letdown.

Florida Republicans redraw maps to make District 47 less competitive and lost it before the election.

After making a safe State House seat for Incumbent Rep Paula Stark. She turned out to be a moron.

On the morning of the filing deadline to run Ms. Stark’s husband arrived at the registrar and was shown how the form was incorrectly filled out and (some reports vary) missing the candidate’s signature. He was told to correct it and return before 5pm. That did not happen. Stark can’t run.

She ran to the courts to argue that in her case there should be an exception because her husband INTENDED to drop the form by the due date but was turned away and so it’s the registrar’s fault the form wasn’t accepted.

Court said, “Nah. Plain as day, needs to be filed by the date and you missed it.”

And a quirk to Florida law, a write-in candidate MUST notify the registrar via a different form of intent to campaign before the same deadline she missed as the incumbent. No votes for her or any undeclared write in candidate are valid.

Whichever of the two Democrats wins the upcoming primary will be running unopposed.

Would like it, would watch again if true, but if tgey are leaving because they can’t sell out a 47,000 seat stadium, doubt they will want to put a team back at Lumen. They had ok crowds in 2020 before the season was suspended due to COVID, but the 2023 revival saw fewer crowds because whether games often coincided with Kraken home games.

Been thinking, since some college football players might look at the UFL if not drafted by the NFL, NCAA should try adopting a few of the differences that the UFL has. They kept the XFL’s three point conversion, which was from further back in the field. NFL sometimes does adopt rules and innovations from other leagues.

Todd Blanche made the deadline and gave a federal judge the untedacted documents. He also filed an explanatory memo, which is now public, and you can read it.

When Congress passed the Epstein release act demanding the documents and Donald Trump signed it, it was very clear that for matters of political expediency personal reputation and privacy could not be redacted. Only the names of victims could be redacted. Todd Blanche as then assistant Attorney General wrote a memo stating that in addition to what Congress said, the DOJ was authorized to withhold law-enforcement sources, people with privilege, and government employees.

The memo Todd Blanche filed with the court today justifying the redactions he has now had to make available to the judge cites this rule which by definition is not part of the law and were improper redactions.

Todd, Todd, Todd. You are a practicing attorney. this not how any of this works. You don’t get to write a memo absolving yourself of the responsibility to follow a law and then cite your own memo as immunity for not following the law.

You’re so fucked. The judge has already asked you multiple times if you redacted anny information that was not directly tied to the identity of the victims and you repeatedly said no OR redactions were matters of national security. You today told the judge that throughout the process anytime a law-enforcement personnel name was in the to or from of an email that name was redacted. Who investigated a case in Florida a decade ago is national security is the argument you’re forced to make. And that argument, contradicts what you have been telling a federal court for almost 2 years about your handling of the documents.

Mayors should not have names like Jenny or Katie.

City council members have criticized the mayor’s decision, which leaves the police department without permanent leadership during an active investigation of a major shooting incident and with one potential suspect still at large. City council members were quick to criticize the decision, with Rob Saka and Maritza Rivera criticizing the decision before it was official on Thursday. A majority of the council has reportedly expressed disapproval of the decision, according to sources familiar with the council’s reaction.

    @CNN

The Justice Department is admitting that a $14 million renovation on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, was flawed, and is dropping the criminal case against a former Olympian that accused him of damaging the pool, according to a new court filing.

  149. Roger Rabbit spews:

    Friday, 7/31/26 at 4:38 pm

    @149 Details:

The Justice Department moved Friday to dismiss … saying evidence prosecutors had recently received refuted the idea that vandals were to blame.

Government lawyers said in a 20-page court filing that additional documents provided by the Interior Department since the indictment of David Hearn show that the damage was the result of a botched installation by a contractor as well as “the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026.”

In addition, a recent visual inspection revealed damage throughout the pool, including in the middle — where prosecutors say a vandal would not likely attempt to peel the lining. “Given all of this newly discovered information, it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to the Reflecting Pool to vandalism, let alone to establish that fact beyond a reasonable doubt,” said the filing from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

    https://www.aol.com/articles/justice-department-drops-criminal-case-221657000.html

This, together with irregularities in the grand jury proceeding, could and should result in: (1) A civil rights lawsuit, and (2) a bar disciplinary investigation of Prosecutor Pirro and every other administration lawyer involved in this shitshow. As Hearn’s lawyers said, “the case against him should never have been brought.” That was fucking obvious to any kid reading news reports.

“Its dismissal today does not erase the abuse of government power in arresting and charging a patriotic American who did nothing wrong. The government’s approach was ready, fire, aim. The administration owes Mr. Hearn an apology,” the lawyers said.

They owe him more than an apology. And Pirro should be disbarred. You don’t fucking indict someone on based on falsehoods or an incomplete investigation, especially when it’s as fucking obvious as it is in this case that the defendant wasn’t responsible for the damage to the pool and he’s being made a scapegoat for political reasons.

A legal expert warned that a motion filed by the Trump administration in the Supreme Court could become an “October ambush.”

    https://www.rawstory.com/supreme-court-mail-in-ballots/

The legal “ambush” he’s referring to is Trump’s emergency motion asking SCOTUS to lift a lower-court injunction against his EO blocking the USPS from delivering mail ballots to voters not on a DHS-approved list while the case is being litigated, a move obviously designed to rig the November elections.

The Supreme Court isn’t blind to public mood, and I don’t think they’re that stupid. The effect of this would be to prevent literally millions of eligible voters from voting, and the result would be a Congress that wasn’t elected by the people and is seen as illegitimate by two-thirds of the country.

The justices would be hard-pressed to justify that. There is no historical precedent for an agency of the political branch of the federal government deciding who’s eligible to vote. No law authorizes that, and it flies in the face of constitutional provisions delegating this responsibility to the states.

Nor are the justices insensitive to their own public image and public perceptions of the court. A ruling that, for example, prevented the entire state of Washington from voting in this fall’s elections would bring the court into disrepute, destroy its illegitimacy, and invite “court reform.”

They’re not gonna do that. Self-preservation forbids it. You needn’t take my word for it; a law professor who understands this stuff is calling the motion “dead on arrival.”

Trump suffers ‘brutal’ 19th straight loss in voter roll crusade: report

The Trump administration suffered its 19th straight court loss in its crusade to seize state voter rolls, per a report.

An Illinois-based federal judge tossed a Department of Justice lawsuit that demanded the state’s unredacted voter rolls. U.S. District Judge Colleen Lawless wrote in her opinion that amending the complaint would be “futile” and dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it can’t be revived in district court.

Democracy Docket noted in its reporting that the “brutal” loss came two days after another federal judge dismissed the DOJ’s lawsuit seeking New Jersey voter rolls.

    https://www.rawstory.com/trump-doj-voter-rolls/
