Drinking Liberally — Seattle

by Darryl — Tuesday, 7/31/12, 5:07 pm

DLBottlePlease join us for an evening of politics and conversation over a pint at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally.

Tonight we will be joined by Secretary of State candidate, past Public Delegate to the United Nations, and former two-term Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels.

(During his last visit to Drinking Liberally, Mayor Nickels presented the chapter with a “Republican St” street sign. It still hangs over the bar, plastered with liberal political stickers.)

We meet every Tuesday at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00pm. Some people show up earlier for Dinner.

Can’t make it to Seattle tonight? Check out one of the other DL meetings over the next week. The Tri-Cities chapter also meets tonight. The Spokane chapter and Drinking Liberally Tacoma meet this Thursday. On Monday, the Yakima, South Bellevue and Olympia chapters meet.

With 230 chapters of Living Liberally, including twelve in Washington state and four in both Oregon and Idaho, chances are excellent there’s a chapter near you.

You forgot to put washed-out has-been in your description of Nickels. Sorry, but most of the choices I’ll have on my ballot in November make me want to barf.

It’s not a left-right thing, (I’m not that far to the left anyway) it’s a forward, jog in place, or go back thing. Very few of the people currently running for office are part of the “go forward” coalition & Nickels certainly isn’t.

If rujax is spotted at tonight’s DL, axe (Jesse Jackson pronunciation) him how does he feel about real men of God standing up for principles?

The Rev. Williams Owens, who is president and founder of the Coalition of African-Americans Pastors and the leader of the campaign, has highlighted opposition to same-sex marriage among African-Americans. He calls this campaign “an effort to save the family.”

“The time has come for a broad-based assault against the powers that be that want to change our culture to one of men marrying men and women marrying women,” said Owens, in an interview Tuesday after the launch event at the National Press Club. “I am ashamed that the first black president chose this road, a disgraceful road.”

Wow, 3,742 religious black Christian pastors are on board for this anti-Obummer campaign. Of course the dumb cinder block… no, dumb as a stump rujax will be wery wery qwiet!

Did I scare my lefty friends off?

The left-right political thing got started during the French revolution and I think has outlived it’s usefulness. Everyone that’s of some sort of use right now and for the near future is a free market social democrat of some stripe or another. The model that best fits today is the tech sector’s early mid and late adopters. Near as I can tell 95% Democrats and Republicans in elected office around the country fit in the mid and late adopter categories with it being heavily weighted towards the late adopters*.

Personally, I’m a political early adopter, so fuck those people.

*I think I’m being charitable by describing people who want to spend millions of dollars, while we’re deeply in debt, building tanks the military doesn’t need or want, as late adopters.

Take a look at the RealClearPolitics Electoral Map–
    http://www.realclearpolitics.c.....e_map.html

In the last month, Wisconsin went to Obama and Missouri went to Romney.

Romney pretty much has to win both Florida and Ohio. IF he does, that makes it Romney 238 vs. Obama 231 with these left:

    Colorado (9)
    Iowa (6)
    Michigan (16)
    Nevada (6)
    New Hampshire (4)
    North Carolina (15)
    Virginia (13)

Let’s say Michigan & Nevada goes to Obama and NC to Romney..
Then we are at 253 Romney vs. 253 Obama with these left–

    Colorado (9)
    Iowa (6)
    New Hampshire (4)
    Virginia (13)

Means that to win, candidate needs to win at least 2 of these…or Colorado, Iowa and NH to get it done.

Again, let’s see where we are at 2 weeks after the Conventions.

BTW, I see the Democrat Convention has been cut to 3 days because they lack $$.

“His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,” Reid said in reference to George Romney’s decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 1968.

Reid suggested that Romney’s decision to withhold tax information would bar him from ever earning Senate confirmation to a Cabinet post. Then, Reid recalled a phone call his office received about a month ago from “a person who had invested with Bain Capital,” according to The Huffington Post.

Reid said the person told him: “Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.”

Madden added that it was “troubling and disappointing that Senator Reid would cite Governor Romney’s father, George, as part of a personal attack against the governor. We have many substantive disagreements with the senator and his policies, but using insults about a father-son relationship is a step too far.”

Reid did not identify his alleged source. And questions about Romney’s taxes have remained. But this is a bit reminiscent of Billy Shaheen talking about Barack Obama and drugs back in January 2008 — it tosses an explosive topic into the conversation, even in unsubstantiated form. It’s worth noting that Romney’s camp recently told Alex that it’s “not true” that the candidate ever had a year of paying zero taxes.

I got a kick out of this article. The solution?
Why don’t cut wages or government employees…RAISE PROPERTY TAXES 33%!!
And wouldn’t you know it, the Mayor and Council are all Dummocrats.

Earlier this month Scranton attracted international attention when Mayor Chris Doherty, a Democrat, said the city was unable to meet its million-dollar payroll, and he ordered all 400 city workers to be paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Doherty, whose salary is $50,000 a year, slashed his own pay along with police, firefighters and public works employees.
Unions representing city workers went to court and won an injunction preventing Doherty from violating collective bargaining agreements. The mayor ignored the court order, explaining the city did not have money to pay workers their full salaries.
Firefighters like Judge called the mayor’s decision “insulting.”
“These guys are trained professionals. These guys train every day,” he said. “They put their lives on the line.”
Two weeks ago, citing improved tax flow, the mayor restored full pay but still faced a contempt hearing for ignoring a judge’s order. The city, meanwhile, owed workers about $700,000 in back wages.
Last Friday, the mayor and city council, all of whom are Democrats, reached agreement on a financial recovery plan that among other things calls for a minimum 33 percent increase in real estate taxes. Pending state approval, the plan paves the way for Scranton to almost immediately receive more than $2 million through in a state loan and a grant.

Massive Tax increases and grants (someone elses money)..
    They are the Dummocrat Way!!

    @ Spuddy

In any publication, the AUTHOR is required to cite sources. Otherwise, its either plagiarism, or a lie. There is no writing instructor or English professor anywhere in the country that would accept a purportedly factual submitted work of writing with non-cited source material. That is an absolute requirement. If ev is going to submit something as fact, then that fact must have a source. Otherwise, there is no basis for debate, and no foundation in reality. Therefore it is fiction.

Since, like you, he is seriously unhinged, a TeaBagg imbecile and obviously uneducated, ( I’d say probably less than a high school graduate) he has not done this.

Criminentlies, I am sick of reactionary morons; spouting rumors, innuendo, and horribly shallow rhetoric as “fact” when they cannot even spell correctly or use proper punctuation. Just once I would like to see a properly educated TeaBagger. But that is a totally incongruous concept. One automatically assumes that calling oneself a TeaBagger is an automatic indication that the individual is not well educated nor are they capable of engaging in discourse without lying in a manner than can easily be pointed out.

Republicans continue to drive moderates out of their party; new polls are devastating for the GOP. (Gee, is there a connection?)

“One of the most underreported stories of this presidential election is how the Republican brand is in FAR WORSE shape than the Democratic brand. In our most recent NBC/WSJ poll, the GOP’s fav/unfav was 34%-43% vs. the Democrats’ 40%-40%. Indeed, the GOP has had a worse fav/unfav than the Democrats in every single NBC/WSJ poll (that’s 14 of them!!!) since Jan. 2011, after Republicans won control of the House. So as the Tea Party/grassroots/anti-establishment conservative wing of the GOP has become MORE powerful, the GOP’s overall brand image has gone down, especially with indies.”

    And …

“Brand new Quinnipiac/New York Times/CBS surveys show Obama leading Romney among likely voters in Florida (51%-45%), Ohio (50%-44%), and Pennsylvania (53%-42%).”

    Ohio: CBS/NYT 35/27/32, 2008 39/31/30, 2010 36/37/28
    Pennsylvania: CBS/NYT 38/32/26, 2008 44/37/18, 2010 40/37/23
The CBS/NYT model has Democrats a +9 in Florida when in 2008 they were only a +3 and an even split in the 2010 midterms. Ohio’s sample has exactly the split in 2008 (D+8), which is nine points better than Democrats did in the midterms. Pennsylvania’s numbers (D+6) come closest to a rational predictive model, somewhere between 2008′s D+7 and 2010′s D+3, but still looking mighty optimistic for Democratic turnout.

In other words, these polls are entirely predictive if one believes that Democrats will outperform their turnout models from the 2008 election in Florida and Ohio. That would require a huge boost in Democratic enthusiasm and a sharp dropoff in Republican enthusiasm — which is exactly the opposite that Gallup found last week.

    http://hotair.com/archives/201.....itting-50/

Obama’s below 50% in 3/4 of the states, including essentially all of the battleground states.

So true, spuds. You can find a “source” on the net to support just about anything you want to say. But here’s the problem. Unlike professionally edited academic and media sources, the net is a free-for-all. Anyone can post anything. There’s no vetting, no editing, no source verification. So a lot of it is bullshit. And you’re one of those who doesn’t know how to fact-check and can’t tell the difference between fact and fiction. I almost feel sorry for you.

Harry Reid is the epitome of scumsuckers.
Making shit up and throwing it out there.
Even ABC is calling BS on this–
    This is from ABC-

Here’s a totally unsubstantiated rumor: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said that he’s heard that Romney did not pay any taxes for 10 years. Democrats have criticized Romney for not releasing more than two years of his tax returns. But there has never been anything to suggest that Romney’s tax bill was zero.
The presumptive GOP candidate has said he always paid all of the taxes he was required by law to pay. But he has said releasing more tax returns would likely not quiet critics.
And so speculation has run rampant. In an interview with the Huffington Post , Reid said that a month ago someone who invested with Bain Capital, called his office to say that Romney, “didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.”
Romney is the former CEO of Bain Capital.
“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” said Reid. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?

Totally unsubstantiated rumor being thrown out there by the Senate Majority leader. How low can Harry go?? The Dems are in trouble.

The Obama MisAdministration has yet another scandal on it’s hands that will piss off Americans..

Employees at the obscure General Services Administration are quietly gobbling up 10 percent of the entire federal government’s bonus checks, a top Republican lawmaker revealed Wednesday, with the tab reaching a stunning $44 million last year.
The $44 million amount is far more than was previously reported. As House lawmakers convened a hearing Wednesday digging deep into alleged mismanagement and waste at the embattled agency, Transportation Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla, called the latest revelations “absolutely outrageous.”
Disclosing the results of what he described as a preliminary investigation, Mica said bonuses totaled $44 million, with many bonuses worth $50,000 apiece and some going to workers now under investigation. One employee, he said, received a $79,000 bonus, adding up to nearly $260,000 in total compensation.
Lawmakers also said overtime payments were over the top. Mica cited one case where a worker with an $84,000 salary received $115,000 in overtime.
“There’s something wrong at GSA when you have to pay an employee $115,000 in overtime,” he said.
Though agency bonuses were worth 10 percent of all government bonuses, Mica said, GSA staff makes up just 1 percent of the total federal workforce.

Here is why the MSM is so irrelevant. Double standard beyond all comprehension..

Back in May, Ann Romney, wife of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, wore a $990 Reed Krakoff silk shirt for a media appearance. The item of clothing set off a media firestorm, with the Romneys widely accused of being “out of touch” with average Americans.
In particular, the Washington Post wrote that the $990 blouse “will not help her husband change those perceptions, no matter how many Laundromat photo ops are on the campaign’s itinerary.”
Fast forward to last Friday, when First Lady Michelle Obama attended an Olympics reception for heads of state at Buckingham Palace, donning a J. Mendel cap sleeve jacket from the 2013 Resort collection.
    The price-tag? $6,800.
This time, the Washington Post simply described the intricacies of the jacket and noted that Mrs. Obama has previously been criticized for “not dressing up enough for Queen Elizabeth II, so she stepped up her game.” No snide remarks, no outrage over the cost, no suggestion she was “out of touch.”
“The media’s overabundant love affair with the Obamas has become increasingly blatant as this election draws nearer. Scrutinizing Mrs. Romney for a fashion choice that cost considerably less than that of the First Lady is yet another example of the media being purely sanctimonious,” former political publicist Angie Meyer told FoxNews.com. “The media continues to relish their roles as liberal bullies, and have relentlessly bullied the Romneys from the beginning. It is pure hypocrisy at its finest.”

So obama wears a $6800 dress and it’s great.
Romney wears a $990 blouse and the world is coming to an end.

Yet another Dummocrat stepping gleefully into the Chick-Fil-A minefield. Another dope. You’ve got to read what she did. After she stepped into shit, then she tries to say she was only speaking as a citizen. This is hysterical!! From AP

    Christine Quinn (AP)

A powerful New York politician claims she was just speaking as a private citizen when she tried to run Chick-fil-A out of town, but she used her official letterhead and even invoked her position as City Council speaker to apply pressure on the embattled chicken chain.
New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has mayoral aspirations, sent a letter to New York University president John Sexton on Saturday asking the school to immediately end their contract with the fast food restaurant. The Atlanta-based company’s sole New York City outlet is in the school’s food court.
“I write as the Speaker of the NYC Council, and on behalf of my family. NYC is a place where we celebrate diversity. We do not believe in denigrating others. We revel in the diversity of all our citizens and their families,” the letter begins.
“Let me be clear ‐‐ I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views,” Quinn, an open lesbian who recently married her longtime partner, also wrote in the letter. “We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that.”
‘If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be considering someone’s view on abortion.’
    – -NYC Council member Peter Vallone
“As such I urge you to sever your relationship with the Chick‐fil‐A establishment that exists on your campus,” the speaker added.
The letter has drawn the ire from others on the council.
“She can write to someone as a council member, but if she states that she is writing as the Speaker it can only be on behalf of the entire council. She has to have the unanimous vote of the council, and I don’t recall voting on this matter,” City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) told FoxNews.com. “A stance on gay marriage is in no way a forum to prevent someone form running a business in a community.
“If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be considering someone’s view on abortion.”

‘If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be considering someone’s view on abortion.’
    – -NYC Council member Peter Vallone

That’s precisely the point. Even a fellow Dummocrat knows the NYC clown stepped way across the line.
This is getting better & better.
Agree with Dummocrats politically or if you dare question, we will label you a hater and attack your business.
Is this the New America Obama is promising us??

the costs of inflation, within reasonable ranges, are not very high…

Still, at the end of the day if we try further monetary expansion and it fails to stimulate employment, I don’t see a huge social cost to having a three or four percent rather than a two percent inflation rate.

    http://marginalrevolution.com/.....olicy.html

Wow, that’s quite a contrast to the inflation fear-mongering from the right.

Krugman made a related argument claiming that a higher inflation rate from monetary stimulus would force money off the sidelines. All good and well if more jobs are the result.

However, we all know that since 2008 monetary stimulus has failed to produce substantial jobs and the inflation we’ve since seen in commodities (like oil, corn, wheat, metals, etc) has been damn near unbearable to lower income people. So if it’s tried again (unlikely) it had better produce jobs.

RIP Gore Vidal. I hope someone like you steps up now that you’re gone, otherwise we’re truly lost.

Of course you blame this on Obama.

Actually, no I don’t. Similarly, I do not think it appropriate to blame, say, Bush for technological advances and gains in efficiency which permit companies to do more with less. This happens, no matter who occupies the White House.

    Here’s my point:

Throughout history various aspects of industry have become or are becoming obsolete. Consider:

    Blacksmiths

    Typesetters

    Transcriptionists

Robotics, just-in-time technology, speech recognition replace people. It happens. Will continue to happen.

I think it is incumbent on workers in threatened industries to realize that they are threatened, that wanting it to be the way it was is irrelevant, and to do something to make themselves marketable in some other field.

This isn’t Obama’s fault – obsolescence, I mean. There’s plenty else to blame on him. The forward march of techology isn’t his fault, nor was it Bush’s before him.

Hmmm. And of course you don’t seem to complain when the government does SOMETHING like cut taxes, export/import bank, trade policies which in effect subsidize corporations to do stuff like offshore jobs and increase profit margins and boost executive compensation into unconscionable heights.

Government does plenty already. There are larger numbers of people needing support right now but it’s not like programs did not exist, covered by government, employers, and unions.

It’s not Obama’s job to find a job for a transcriptionist who loses hers because the dermatologist spent $1000 on a Dragon software program and terminated her. It’s just not.

It IS his job to foster an environment conducive to economic growth.

Meanwhile, it’s not as if that transcriptionist hasn’t heard about Dragon and speech recognition. Has she been expanding her skill set? Or did she wait to become unemployed, then turn to the government to cut her a check and find her a new job?

I think it is incumbent on workers in threatened industries to realize that they are threatened, that wanting it to be the way it was is irrelevant, and to do something to make themselves marketable in some other field.

Thats my issue. As a manual machinist with 25 years experience, my job is obsolete. I can set up and program CNC machines, but for some reason that would set me back nearly $10 per hour than I was making before I got fucked over by my last employer; My hours reduced to 32, at the same time my rent went up by 15%, and gasoline was touching on $5 a gallon 3 years ago, and my electric bill went up by 10% when city light got it’s regular increase. I lost my apartment when I couldn’t make the bills after seeing that hours reduction for over a year starting in June of 2007 and lasting for two years.

So, out of work now for three years. Going to school to finish the degree I started 28 years ago, and trying to live on student loans. But, as the Legislature has seen fit to push for a nearly 400% increase in tuition rates since I last went to school, and NOBODY IS HIRING, I have to try to muddle through living on my rent plus a couple hundred in borrowed dollars every month.

I’m 48 years old. I’ve been told by employers that they are looking for someone “with more current-level training”, (meaning younger). I’ve been told by the State Worksource that my credit rating, now completely in the shitter, is a primary factor in companies hiring practices. I’ve been told by employers that as I have been out of work for three years, that they cannot hire someone who is not already currently employed.

Thats your modern economy. Fuck people over, rob them blind, raise the prices of everything and then accuse the unemployed of being lazy because they aren’t as rich as the fucking Koch Brothers.

I don’t know where that imaginary price of gasoline mentioned upthread comes from, I haven’t seen gasoline under $3.00 a gallon in at least 10 years. Gasoline topping $4.00 a gallon was the impetus of my old boss cutting hours paid to 32 no matter how much I actually worked. He didn’t want to drive that hour plus commute twice a day more than he had to. Meanwhile, he’s doing work in his private shop at his home for cash and turning down jobs or blowing off returning phone calls from customers or, as far as I know, taking those written messages home and giving those customers discounts for bypassing his shop.

So fuck you and your “leaner, more efficient” economy. The billionaires and hundred-millionairs get to keep even more money, and the only people they’re employing are their slaves in China and Mexico. All they are is a bunch of thieves.

No, that’s not. You described the economy above @ 155. Your work became somewhat less in demand, your age is a limiting factor, and despite your training your skills/classwork might be out of date. Employers cut back as demand for their services declines, and they learn to do more with less. Employers who used to manage employees now manage less and do manual labor more.

None of that has anything to do with Kochs or the right wing. That’s just humankind, advancing technologically, sometimes in fits and starts, and some people are lost in the progress. The growing underground economy you refer to is not surprising given the difficulty in the current economy, and the challenges in hiring and then having to lay off. Easier to pay under the table, from both ends. Doesn’t help the state but it feeds people. I have a guy I pay $25 per hour to that does an awful lot of work for me. He can’t work as many hours as I need him to. I hand him 5-600 dollars each week and would prefer to pay him closer to a grand.

Your situation is unfortunate. Does not make it the fault of the right.

I’m not concerned about the election and I’m laughing too hard to be angry. I’m not a big fan of Obama’s, he’s just the least bad option and I’m pretty sure the least bad option will win. I’m also confident that if Romney does somehow pull off a win most of the right will be disappointed in the “Massachusetts Moderate” that’s been elected.

The Republican that’s currently running for president isn’t anywhere close to being a member of the far right.
