“State employees cashing in on their unions’ new clout” distorted state worker pay raises by ignoring the facts while playing up anti-worker partisan rhetoric. You focused on one nurse’s 20 percent pay raise while burying the fact (in “Governor: Raises will help state compete for workers”) that state-employed nurses are paid 42.5 percent less than private-sector nurses.
The state is just starting to narrow the pay gap and its workers will still lag the market-based salary by 20 percent. In any field, private or public, underpaying workers drives the best and brightest away and makes it impossible to replace them.
If we want government to work, we’ll need competent workers paid reasonable salaries. Thankfully, the state is taking a step in this direction.

Meanwhile, on this balmy Fourth of July, remember and watch closely for a few important pieces of sleight-of-hand that you may see when righty trolls talk about the Evil Canadian Single-Payer Plan.
1) Most of the “evidence” is anecdotal in nature. Yes, there are really long waits if you’re stuck in rural Canada and need a hip replacement. Doctors are highly-skilled, highly-paid professionals here as well. They can live in Vancouver where there are good schools, cultural activities, fantastic shopping and restaurants, sun, surf, mountains, etc. or they can live in Smithers, BC where there’s cheap land and trees.
This is also a problem in the US. The community hospital systems that provide secondary care in the rural US are unnerving to be in, and have documented problems with the level of care they provide, but we don’t have a right-wing noise machine that points to those and says “Look! The system is broken!”
2) Canada is not a totalitarian state where the poor oppressed citizens cower in fear of their government. It is a democracy, rather like the one you live in. A preponderance of French-speakers and urban dwellers pulls the political dialog somewhat to the left. The currently ruling (sort of) Conservative government of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper would LOVE to introduce privatized health care here. There is no political support for this among voters. It is considered a lunatic fringe position.
3) Most importantly, any “single-payer” system in the US almost certainly not be a Canadian-style system. The Canadian Medicare system is built on the idea that the US’s high-tech medical infrastructure is right next door, and people needing high-value medical care can be sent there. This is by design, and was not an oversight or an accident.
Most countries with state-funded health care have a two-tier system. The state provides primary care and catastrophic insurance. So-called “discretionary” care can be provided by the private sector on a fee basis.
Oh, shit! If people can PAY for first-tier care, that destroys the entire righty troll argument. My bad! Sorry.

I enjoy listening to the podcast of Olberman every day, and sometimes I do get to watch the whole show. He does his best to tell what we need to know, and not what Fox News thinks we need to know. He drives his former employers at the Fox organization crazy. I believe Olbermann once did sports reports for Fox Sports. He still does a little sports coverage for ESPN Radio(Big Show with Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann, but they say there is a big announcement coming for the show).
The one person at FOX that he does drive crazy is Bill O’Reilly, who when he attacks MSNBC, only mentions radical elements at MSNBC, but not by name. I remember it provoked Scarborough into saying O’Reilly is not a Conservative. Well, Scarborough is a former Conservative Republican Congressmember from Florida.

I just got back from Washington D.C, and although I was there to see a few of the Smithsonian Museums, the Capitol, and a few other buildings, as well as what can be considered a busfan and railfan’s holiday, I also went to see the monuments on the Mall. I got most of them, including the Washington, WWII, D.C WWI Monument(to all D.C. Residents who fought in WWI), Vietnam, Lincoln, Korea, FDR, and Jefferson. Each one of those are important to American History. Washington set the standard, by refusing to become a KING, even though he was popular and the people would have gone along with it. Jefferson helped draft a revolutionary document signed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, and despite the contradiction of being a slave owner, he was the one that laid the foundation for the Freedoms we take for granted. D.C. WWI. National WWII Memorial, Korea, and Vietnam honors those who fought to preserve democracy, the Republic, and the rule of law. FDR Monument honors the man who might have saved the American system when people might have been willing to accept both Fascism and or Communisim just to get away from the misery of the Great Depression. The Lincoln Memorial honors the man who election may have been responsible for the Civil War, but brought the country back from Civil War. Perhaps the current administration should take that tour one of these days.

Plus Harper has had to fire a few Conservatives for not towing the party line, especially since one voted against the budget, which down here is no big deal, the Government just gets shut down. In Canada, failure to pass a budget is an automatic no-confidence vote, and means early elections.

There’s a lot going on there, but it’s too much for me to summarize, and I generally don’t comment on Canadian politics. If I ever decide to take residency up here (unlikely), I’ll start forming a real opinion.
Suffice it to say that Harper’s only solace as the leader of an unpopular government is that all of his opponents (the Liberals, Greens and NDP) are equally unpopular. The day anyone thinks that they can actually “win” an election, you’ll see a no-confidence motion called the next day.

A quick spew review of Tavis Smiley’s “debate” with the Goldycrats has this: Chris Dodd said that the United States should march into Darfur, if possible with the UN or NATO, unilaterally if necessary. Amen, said Hillary. Amen, said Richardson. Amen, said the rest of the leftist Amen Corner.
(Amazing how secular fundamentalist Goldycrats get religion whenever they get close to a microphone or an African Methodist-Episcopal church. Remember how Gore, campaigning from the pulpit, started sounding like a poor black child who had made good at gangsta rap? Remember Hillary trying to sound … I done come too farrrr … like a poor black preacher or ghetto poet? LOL!!!! Now that’s original. Perhaps if he was still on Sportscenter doing his “from way downtown…..BANG!!!!” or his “en fuego” line to describe Tiger Woods on the back 9 of Augusta.
In THAT role, he was great. As a “news journalist”, its hard to take him seriously. The niche he has carved out that panders to the far left does not in any way shape or form make him worthy of the title of “American hero” or the Edward R. Murrow of our time.

Keith is right regardless of your opinions of his qualifications. Even if this were the first and only time Keith has made a point, he’s right.
If you disagree with the facts in the commentary he laid out, then specifically tell us where he is wrong and why.
You can’t and you won’t. At least not honestly.
Which brings me to my final point: If reporting the truth means pandering to the far left, then what does that say for you and your news sources?

The Dub writer doesn’t want “all religion” separated from our public lives, because that would be a repudiation of born-again blacks (pasty white secular fundamentalist Democrats who get religion and who get black genes when they get near a captive constituency of black voters stuck to their pews on Sunday mornings.
It would also be a repudiation of civil rights (the REVEREND Martin luther King, the Reverend Ralph David Abernathy, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Reverend Al Sharpton) and of the religious fanatics who turned Christendom against slavery.

Good news. NPR reports this morning that Biden’s presidential campaign in 1988 was derailed only because he “borrowed” speeches from a British MP. The uninformed and the unfair back then said that Biden had stolen speeches from a British MP. Now we know better. I’m so ashamed of thinking he was a sniveling, turd-eating, goveling, sneaking little thief. Joe is not a crook. (Neither a borrower nor a lender be? Forget about it. Joltin Joe’s good to go.)

Bad news: NPR reports this morning that AIDS is way down, or was flagrantly over-reported. Same thing happened in NYC in the early 1990s, and gays pretty much rioted in protest … seems that a decline in the disease du jour would probably have led to a decline in gay funding. (And you & Dan Savage thought the problem was that mean President Reagan caused AIDS. Apparently the problem was that he didn’t cause enough.)

Exactly why we have a 1st Amendment to the Constitution – to protect the speech of people like the ignoramus filled UW Daily, and to protect the right of the people to worship as they see fit AND to be engaged in the political process just like anyone else.
