    Partial remains of Andrew Irvine, George Mallory’s climbing partner on June 8, 1924, have been found sticking out of a melting glacier below Mount Everest. The discovery consists of a boot, sock, and foot.

    Mallory and Irvine probably sustained a fatal fall while roped together. Mallory’s body, intact with injuries consistent with a fall, and tied to a broken rope, was found in 1999 high on the mountain but several hundred feet below the climbing route.

    This latest discovery suggests Irvine either fell all the way down the mountain, or his body was swept off by avalanches. It refutes speculation the Chinese recovered his body and the camera film that could reveal whether the summit was reached in 1924.

    I don’t believe they did, but it’s possible. That remains a mystery, but finding Irvine’s partial remains is a major piece of the puzzle. The rest of him, and the camera, may be nearby.

    Reliance on historical turnout in combination with scoring to model “likely voters” is going to produce a few surprises this year. That doesn’t make the polls “wrong”. It makes the applied models wrong.

    Many polls shift to likely voter models beginning in September. Past analysis of these results has proved that there is very little difference between RV results and LV results earlier in this process in September but that differences begin to emerge in October as the election draws nearer and actual voting begins to take place.

    It varies among polls, but an interesting feature is that narrowing of polls as the election draws nearer may not be the result of “undecided” respondents making a decision, but rather the model of likely voters becoming more reliable. This is due to the increased reliability of responses to LV scoring questions. Here’s an example of the kinds of questions used to score LV:

    Modern voting procedures introduce some confounding variables to these kinds of scoring methods, as Gallup explains. People who vote by mail, especially people who have done so their whole lives, are bound to be confused by a question asking them to name the precinct in which they vote and give the street address of the voting location.

    Younger voters, under 50, are more likely to have not voted in some of the most recent past elections. And thus their LV scores may be lower.

    I think one possible consequence of these scoring methodologies is that the undecided voter break signal in the data can be muted. There’s a lot of correlations between voter characteristics that result in a higher tendency to remain undecided late in an election and voter characteristics that lower LV scores.

    Then throw in Dobbs, gender warfare politics, and increasingly racist tone and messaging from one of the two campaigns and I expect there will be some significant breaks in one direction that may not be fully reflected in the polls.

    And if that should happen to result in Harris locking up the Blue Wall and extending beyond in Arizona, Georgia, and maybe even North Carolina, Republicans are going to gun up and riot in the streets, citing “polls” as their justification.

    Early voting opens in a bunch of states today. As these turnouts get reported we can expect to see some jumps in early vote totals and begin to get an idea of this measure of voter interest, intention, and energy. So far early turnout favors Democrats 2 to 1, and the numbers suggest a higher than average turnout.

    A very large voter turnout favoring Democrats is just one more reason unpopular extremist Republicans will use to justify violent attacks on our communities and public institutions.

    Last month timothy hay and alfalfa hay were each $30/bale.

    Today timothy was $24 and alfalfa (different bale size so I estimate here) is $24-25.

    A couple of reasons:

    • No massive wildfires burning up fields and interfering with hay transport.
    • Apparently Russia and Ukraine selling wheat at rock-bottom prices to fund their war is trickling down to grass and grain production in the US, or at least that is what is being talked about among the hay providers on Whidbey, who largely truck their product over from eastern WA.

    It’s nice at my end that 3-4 weeks of hay costs $50 less than it did a month ago, but it won’t do the producers of it any good.

    Price gouging isn’t nearly as big a problem to the US economy as falling producer prices in ag industries will be.

    There was a significantly larger poll error in 2020 than in 2016.

    Confidential campaign internal polls have probably done more to account for these historical and apparently growing levels of poll error. But these are untested efforts and their results will be unknown to the rest of us.

    But given these “unknowable unknowns” Harris and Democrats are far better positioned to grow share with low propensity voters than Trump and MAGA. Obviously first and foremost because they actually have a fully funded, fully staffed, data driven high speed GOTV machine built to find them, register them if they are not, and painstakingly hand render their votes in swing states and districts. But also because these very same low propensity voters are more available to Harris’s future focused campaign messaging and are less responsive to Trump’s insane rantings about feelthy Meskins and “The Blacks”.

    And as I note above, for reasons having to do with poll methodology and sample weighting, most of the break among these low propensity voters will only appear in last minute poll results if at all.

    Meanwhile Trump, with virtually no GOTV program other than stunts, is left to hope and pray that he can suppress turnout and get close to splitting new/low propensity voters with his calls for a violent race war. Concluding that his is the stronger strategy requires not only a very dark vision of American voters, but also a stark rejection of historical patterns of voter behavior. Trump is pushing all-in on a strategy promoting racially tinged civil war. And if the election doesn’t give him that, he appears ready to demand it anyway.

    There’s a lot of debate about exactly where they were last seen. The irrefutable evidence only places them below the first step. The second step is a formidable obstacle and the Chinese overcame it in 1960 with a large team; today, there’s a pair of ladders on it. It’s certain they didn’t reach it before afternoon, which wouldn’t leave them enough time to reach the summit and avoid a night descent. The terrain between the first and second steps is treacherous, and modern-day climbers negotiate it with the aid of fixed ropes. They fell well below that area, so they probably turned back at the first or second step.
