    Update on the sabotage of the TGV network. Foreign suspects are not being ruled out. Could be anybody. It’s France, There are always labor issues at SNCF, but that mostly entails a few people on a picket line. Although can’t rule out an inside job, due to the extent of the damage. As the European Union directive for Liberalization of National Railway networks now being implemented, SNCF has lost its monopoly on these services. At first it was the central government doing a form of money laundering, with SNCF always winning the contract. Now regions have to open up the contracts, and SNCF isn’t always winning.

    The first step towards SNCF implementing the EU directive I mentioned, was separating operations from infrastructure management. Problem is, a lot of stations were older than that. Both of those affected designs were great products though. The at the time Alstom Regiolis(since sold to Spanish manufacturer CAF, during EU Merger approval), is designed to operate on the TER network, where not all lines are fully electrified, or on the same voltage. The Regiolis is available in Diesel, Diesel-Elctric, Electric, Dual Voltage, and various dual mode versions.

    Canadian National re-opening the main line in Jasper, Alberta after the recent wildfire . Besides tge 40 daily freight trains, a couple passenger operations were affected. Although of those two, the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train probably is jealous of VIA Rail right now. Tge government passenger rail carrier will resume operations west of Edmonton probably in a week or two, it will be awhile before the private Rocky Mountaineer can resume operations. The Rocky Mountaineer relies on hotels for overnight journeys, and it appears the ones in Jasper are unavailable indefinitely. VIA’s Vancouver-Toronto flagship, the Canadian, still uses the Classic streamlined rolling stock ordered by Canadian Pacific in the 50s, includes sleeper cars. Tge Jasper-Prince Rupert service operates sort of like the RM, except it serves local communities as a VIA Remote service train(serves largely roadless communities).

    There are plans to finally replace the aging equipment, hopefully more rolling stock is ordered so these essential services outside of the Windsor-Quebec City corridor can operate more than 2-3days a week.
