    SEPTA in Philadelphia should have just bought the Alstom design for their multi-level coaches, instead of CRRC. Now the order is canceled. Ironically, Philadelphia had been home to one of America’s best railcar manufacturers, Budd. Some of their products, still are in regular service, 40 years after the company shut down.

    CRRC, a state-owned company, is the world’s largest rolling stock manufacturer. The SEPTA contract was with CRRC MA, the affiliate of the Chinese firm that opened a factory in Springfield, Mass., to meet “Buy America” requirements for a 404-car order for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority rapid-transit equipment. The first portion of that order was placed in 2014 and remains years from completion; it has been plagued with quality-control issues and operational problems for the cars that have reached service. In March, the MBTA agreed to pay $148 million beyond the initial $870 million of the two-part in an effort to see it completed by 2027 [see “MBTA to pay more …,” News Wire, March 29, 2024]. Without the additional funds, the MBTA said the order would have been completed no earlier than 2029.

    Subsequent diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China, security concerns, and congressional and industry concerns over CRRC’s potential to set artificially low prices — along with its issues in fulfilling its first American contracts — have essentially driven the Chinese manufacturer out of the U.S. passenger rail market. One provision of the MBTA agreement to complete its Red and Orange Line cars gives the transit agency an option to buy the Springfield, Mass., plant if CRRC sells it.

    Meanwhile the Swiss company building electric multiple units for CalTrain seems to be getting the job done as tge Peninsula Commute service gets closer to electrification.

    The Brightline is privately funded and owned passenger train running from Miami to Orlando. (Go Magic, great basketball player from the Rainier Valley on that team). It’s multiple trains a day run on a schedule, but it’s too much to expect motorists to look up the departure times. Even Florida East Coast freight trains run on schedules, and those are longer(and slower) than the Brightline trains on the same route. Also, since Brightline can go up to 110-125mph on some stretches, those grade crossings have to have quadrant gates.

When they took over the former PRR and Reading routes, they built the Center City tunnel , to connect the networks, but decided to not continue with interlining the routes. Then there is a Union rule on assistant conductors that is inane. Dates back to how the electric multiple units are managed. They are semi-permanently coupled in two car married pairs. Each, even if coupled together, say six of them, in one train, are separate trains, so up to six assistant conductors. The new European units(built in Utah) CalTrain will operate, don’t have that problem.

    The purpose of the sanctions was to get Tehran to agree to suspend their nuclear weapons program. Once they agreed, the sanctions had served their purpose, and there was no reason to continue them.
