It’s just so hard to know what might happen between now and November at this point, right?
But it sure looks as if Republicans are sticking with Trump, no matter what. And at this point, even if that support softens between now and June, the most likely result would be a contested convention featuring the return of mob violence clowns like Roger Stone, rag tag Proud Boy remnants, camera seeking Republican celebutards like Gaetz, Boebert, and MTG, and their state level equivalents like Michelle Fiore and Blake Masters all gathered in Milwaukee to perform a public political striptease for our amusement.
There will be lots of “energy” and “excitement”. But I’m very doubtful that spectacle will serve to reassure large numbers of disengaged, unaligned independent voters.
Dobbs on the ballot.
Jan 6th on the ballot.
Billionaire tax cuts on the ballot.
COVID recovery on the ballot.
Climate change on the ballot.
Infrastructure on the ballot.
Rape on the ballot.
These are some headwinds. And the best bulwark the GOP has to hold back the storm is their unique combination of gerrymandering and voter suppression, both of which have been substantially dismantled since 2016.
It’s going to be close. Because of gerrymandering and voter suppression. But also perhaps because of official misconduct by local Republican election officials. But I think the anticipated wave of local Republican misconduct may not materialize as part of their plan. Watching two years of felony convictions and long prison sentences get handed down to thousands of Republicans will discourage and dampen the operational enthusiasm of many.
It may be close as hell. But it doesn’t look like it will be enough.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Last night, after the media cycle for the week had been put to bed, Republican Rep. Boebert issued a public apology for her humiliating behavioral misconduct at a theater.
In her apology (prepared by a crisis management consulting team) she described her regret at having “fallen short of her values” and blamed her divorce, and her excitement at the event.
In the now well practiced pattern of crisis redemption it would at this point be incumbent upon the public figure to withdraw from the more public and performative aspects of their public life to focus on their family, their work, their community, and their “healing”.
What are the chances that an elected official, whose entire political career depends upon her efforts as a content creator, can now withdraw from the world of content creation right at the very moment that fate, depravity, and the cowardice of Brave Kevin have provided her and 222 other Republicans an impeachment stage upon which to perform?

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Are Republicans now stuck preaching to the choir loft?
For a long time really, a big component of Republican messaging strategy at almost every level has been to focus on “low information voters” and to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and debate, and sow confusion there about any issue where their political or policy objectives are at odds with the majority of voters (which let’s face it, is almost all of them).
That means flooding the zone with bullshit. Lots of it. All the time.
Bullshit about Sadaam’s involvement in the 9/11 attacks, bullshit about WMDs, bullshit about billionaire tax cuts increasing revenues, bullshit about El Salvadoran “freedom fighters”, bullshit about crack cocaine, bullshit about tan suits, bullshit about kitty litter boxes, bullshit about rapes, bullshit about human reproduction, bullshit about climate change, bullshit about blow jobs, bullshit about vaccines, bullshit about LAPTOP, bullshit about election results, even bullshit about Boats-full-‘O-Dildos. Think about it even a little and it becomes fairly obvious that, aside from everything else, flooding the zone with bullshit has been a growing and very important tactic among Republicans for a very long time.
But while all that bullshit was going on over all those years, something else was also happening. Starting with FOX, and then later followed in suit by plenty of others in all channels, a profitable media eco-system arose devoted to pumping that bullshit out. Court filings, consent decrees, settlements, and criminal convictions have now exposed the true extent of that pumping and the intended purposes of it.
Yet this rise of a Republican bullshit media eco-system was also accompanied by a transformative shift in media consumption and media control. Mobile technology in particular enabled the implementation of media distribution at scale at a never before seen low cost. And depending on the technology employed, it empowered the consumers of that media with vastly greater control. But the uptake of that transformative technology was not and is not uniform. Younger, more affluent, better educated consumers are far more likely to employ sophisticated modern mobile technology in their media consumption compared to older, less affluent, and less educated consumers. In particular, legacy media technology like broadcast television, satellite/cable television, and newspapers are increasingly consumed almost exclusively by much older, or much poorer, or less educated consumers.
Returning to the Republican tactic of flooding the zone with bullshit, with the intended effect that it will produce ambivalence or confusion among low-information voters about a particular topic, it’s very clear that there exist some significant number of American voters who are vulnerable to the tactic. But what is also increasingly becoming clear, is that this vulnerability is also not uniform. And it appears now that the older, poorer, and dumber a voter is, and thus the greater their likelihood to rely upon legacy media for news, the more vulnerable they are to the bullshit.
But the older, poorer, and dumber voters are already voting for Republicans in nearly every election.
So as the Republican Party, led by Wrestler Gym, now prepares to launch what will likely be their greatest ever effort to flood the zone with bullshit, there actually appears to be very little evidence that it will accomplish anything more than enhance Trump/Republican fund raising from among those old, poor, dumb voters.

There is a place for such a party in our political system: It’s where we stash the riff-raff that reputable political parties will have nothing to do with. We just have to make sure responsible citizens turn out to vote so the trash doesn’t take over, as it has in Texas and some other places.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
According to the most recent Quinnipiac, 7 in 10 current Trump supporters are not open to considering any of the other candidates.
And Trump leads Fat Midget by 50 points among Republican and Republican leaning voters polled.
“”Clearly, loyalty to the two leading candidates in the primaries for president is not written in stone. Roughly one-third of Trump’s voters might walk away from him and roughly half from Biden,”
Trump leads Fat Midget and Ramaswammy by 44 points, with Trump earning 62 percent and the two dwarves earning a mere 18 percent.
So the important difference is that one-third of Trump’s voters could walk away from him. And it would not make one bit of difference in the Republican primary.

After all, is there really any difference between flying a Gadsden flag from the back of your truck and wearing a cilice?

Trump said on a Sunday TV talk show today that he won’t run for a third term if he’s elected in 2024. I infer he’s thinking there won’t be any more elections or terms if he gets into power again, because I sure can’t visualize him giving up the White House voluntarily.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Trump just confessed to about 40 of the felony counts against him.

It won’t get his co-defendants off the hook, though. If you help someone rob a bank, you go to jail too.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
79,
Under the statute this is the admission that the Special Prosecutor can use.
Trump acknowledges that a good faith reliance on advice of counsel would have led him to relent from his false claims and his decision to approve the fake elector scheme. Instead he describes a process wherein he decided not to listen to the hundreds of lawyers who gave him sound, legal advice.
Because they were “RINOs”.
In the end some time next spring a jury drawn from DC residents will decide. Chances are they will see these kinds of admissions from Trump for what they are.
Gen Y & Z spews:
@64
Because those jobs pay exactly what they paid in 2000 while rent has quadrupled, the amount borrowed due to rising tuition has tripled and just to service the interest on those loans is a crippling burden to ‘settling down’.
The social contract was broken. Grandparents, Parents, media, corporations told us, “A degree is the only path to a high paying job. We promise you this is the way.”
Then those same parents and grandparents gutted college funding, refused to do no or low interest student loans and entry level wages didn’t rise to keep up with the exploding cost of living.
Our parents bought houses with dual income of $120k in their 30s. We need $75k just to rent a shitty apartment and pay the loans and have a car to get to the job. Did we mention you never really invested in transit except highways?
We were lied to at the time of signing the contract. It should be voided.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@80 He said more than that.
“Former President Donald Trump said that he received counsel from numerous people shortly after the 2020 election but that it was his decision to push the false claim he won the presidency and try to overturn the results. ‘It was my decision, but I listened to some people,’ Trump told NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ in an interview that aired Sunday.”
This is much closer to taking full responsibility for the illegal attempts to overthrow the election than he’s ever come before. It stops just short of admitting he greenlighted the fake electors plot and the illegal meddling with voting machines in Michigan, Coffee County, and elsewhere.
He hasn’t changed his tune that the election was stolen and he did nothing wrong, though. He’s still the same old Trump in those regards.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@81 Voiding a longstanding social contract between millions of people grounded in notions of compulsory participation is no easy task, as various rebels over the last 160 years ranging from Confederate secessionists to modern-day sovereign citizens have found out.
I would add that the Boomer generation had an even worse deal than yours. Those who couldn’t get into college, or afford the tuition (at a time when less loan and other assistance was available) were marched off to a steaming jungle where 58,000 of them died.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I don’t mean to make light of Gen X’s and Y’s struggles, but they didn’t have a draft hanging over them, or go through anything like Vietnam. Trust me, for the typical young Boomer, growing up in that time wasn’t fun and games.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
82,
I agree.
But the thing is, his attorney has indicated his intention to mount an advice of counsel defense to some of the charges.
So he’ll have to put on a case and Smith will have an opportunity to challenge and interrogate that case. Moreover, in order to mount the defense he must prove to the jury that Trump disclosed all relevant facts to the attorneys he relied upon, withheld nothing from them that would have adversely impacted their analysis, received specific advice from those attorneys regarding the course of action for which he is now criminally charged, and committed to following that advice in good faith. Then whatever evidence the defense intends to put on at trial gets discovery.
And since the advice of counsel defense serves to waive attorney client privilege, following discovery Smith gets to call and question every single one of the hundreds of White House, DOJ, and campaign lawyers who begged Trump to stop who can specifically and directly contradict that evidence. That includes William Barr, Cippilone, etc.
And the jury gets a special instruction formulated in the FRCP based on statute that reflects all those conditions.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@85 He doesn’t care a hoot about legal strategy. His entire approach is based on a notion in his head that having millions of fanatical followers makes him untouchable. He figures an angry mob is the only defense he needs.

“It’s prudent for all consumers—especially those in younger generations who are more apt to indulge in nonessential spending—to regularly assess their spending habits and remain mindful of the compounding effect nonessential spending can have on their overall financial stability. If not careful, this type of frequent spending behavior can quickly snowball into bigger and lasting debts,” Dudum said.

EvergreenRailfan spews:
Recently, when the apartment’s washing machine had issues, went to a newly reopened laundromat (upgraded machines), and noticed it had gone coin less. Uses a smart card stored value system, like the Orca Card. With the re-load machines embedded in the wall, less cash. Made me think, after reading about the transition to exact fare on Seattle Transit, especially the operators relieved to no longer have the albatross of the coin changer, the few semi-retired veterans of that era as the ORCA rolled out, probably wished they had it before 69. On a busfans Facebook group, a member mentioned the last straw for Seattle Transit and the Coin Changers, was after a wave of operators being robbed, one was murdered for his. It was $60, adjusted for inflation, $500.
The old fashioned fareboxes, those after each night, went to the vault bus for dumping. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, a couple Kenworths Seattle Transit inherited from the Street Railway operation did the honors, windows blanked out, wheels removed. If ORCA usage increases, probably less need for the farebox, plus with Metro’s fare at $2.75, more bills than coins now. Interagency transfers are only done via ORCA . Still could see better fare coordination instead of each agency setting its own fares. I would prefer the T-line be the base fare on the 1 line, which is $2.25 for a 1 station hop within Seattle, and goes up by distance within Seattle, but for now the Tacoma line is $2, but still a major increase over being fare free for 20 years. $2 is the fare on Pierce Transit, so makes sense for now, to match it.
