Interesting that Energy Northwest is trying again with Nuclear Expansion. Small Modular Reactors probably the better way to go than finishing mothballed Plant 1. Most likely the Xe-100 module will be built at White Bluffs, as Energy Northwest has been demolishing portions of Plants 1 and 4.
https://www.energy-northwest.com/whoweare/news-and-info/Pages/Energy-Northwest-and-X-energy-Sign-Joint-Development-Agreement-for-Xe-100-Advanced-Small-Modular-Reactor-Project.aspx
Looks like SMRs can be scaleable, if only they were viable when Energy Northwest was building Nuclear plants in tge 70s. Although Plant 2 , and its 1400MW is missed when it is down for refueling.
Someone I wonder if Seattle City Light’s visionary Superintendent J.D. Ross would have supported Nuclear. He was never a fan of tge Lake Union Steam Plant, not because of environmental concerns, but because SCL had to buy bunker oil for it. As bonds were retired, rates went down, up until the 70s. Although that cheap power by tge 60s had become a liability. The Seattle First National Bank Building consumed as much power SCL’s first Hydro plant at Cedar Falls.
As the Skagit Hydro project was completed, SCL kept Lake Union on standby for decades, just in case of major droughts. Seems the Nuclear Industry, with its position on renewables, is trying to put itself in the position as a balance, filling the gap when wind and solar are not at their peak.

“@RonDeSantis, #1: slavery was not CTE!” James posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Nothing about that 400 years of evil was a ‘net benefit’ to my ancestors. #2: there are only five black Republicans in Congress and you’re attacking two of them.”
Both Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) have criticized the new standards, which indicate that American slavery helped enslaved people develop “skills” that benefited them, in the past few days.
Scott rebuked the language during a campaign stop in Iowa on Thursday, claiming “there is no silver lining in slavery.”

It’s essentially the same as saying that no law binds them, including any criminal law.
There’s already a long and very well established legal history behind these kinds of disputes. Plenty of US Congress creatures used to claim they didn’t have to obey speed limits or any traffic laws. Long ago some federal judges used to try to avoid paying income taxes and other taxes relying on the very same idiotic logic. Narrowly viewed (as the law requires) laws like these do not burden the duties of a lawmaker in the execution of their elected office nor the independence of any judge.
Alito is straight out of his fucking mind at this point.
He simply wants to flex and force a crisis in order to see if he can extend his power a bit more and flaunt his disregard for the most basic institutions of a democratic society.

It’s fascinating what happens if you replace “black” with “white” in a PragerU video transcript.
Based on a PragerU video from 2017, Taleeb Starkes lists “The Top 5 Issues Facing “White” Americans.” From the video: “Problem number five: the victim mentality. Nothing holds someone back more than seeing himself as a victim. Why? Because a victim is not responsible for his situation. Everything is someone else’s fault. And the victim sees little chance of improving his life. How can he get ahead if someone is holding him back? All this makes the victim unhappy, frustrated and angry. This is how too many Whites see themselves — as victims. So much so that their victim status becomes their primary identity and their ruling ideology. I call it victimology. Unfortunately, many White churches preach this “victimology,” many White parents pass it on to their children, rural and suburbanschools teach it to their students and the White media reinforce it. Meanwhile, the Republican Party and other White grievance groups fundraise on it.”

110,
Honestly, what possible difference does it make?
Burisma wanted to protect Shokin. Burisma had leverage and control over Shokin. Burisma needed Shokin to avoid investigations into their finances and bribes.
Vice President Biden conveyed the stated US policy with respect to Shokin, which not coincidentally perfectly aligned with the stated EU and IMF policy, which was to urge the immediate removal of Shokin, the sooner the better. And that had been the ongoing US policy since before Burisma hired Hunter Biden. It never changed. And soon thereafter Shokin was removed.
So it made no difference then who Hunter Biden’s pals were, or what any of them talked about.
Bribery requires a breach of public trust. More specifically there must be “an official act” taken with intent by a public official in authority to act, and in direct response to the offer of value. And there must be a direct causal link between the act and the offer.
Nobody knows what this stupid, blathering fool of a troll is trying to imply, least of all him. But whatever the fuck it is, it is not bribery or any other identifiable form of public corruption.
Vice President Biden was never given any authority or even influence over the President’s policy with respect to Shokin.
That policy never changed.
If it never changed, then it cannot be said to have changed as a result of any influence exerted by anyone named Biden.
That ongoing and unchanging policy with respect to Shokin was entirely contrary to the interests of Burisma.
The known facts, and according to the profoundly idiotic and muddled speculations of Republican dipshits, with respect to Vice President Joe Biden describe exemplary public integrity serving U.S. interests abroad.
Maybe that’s what makes Republican dipshits so angry.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@98 Republicans have a not-so-hidden agenda to kill us all.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@100 I’d like to know what that’s based on. If it’s DUIs, there’s a simple explanation: The GOP legislature refuses to fix Wisconsin’s crazy “blue” laws that originated from Prohibition.
You see, package sales stop at 9 p.m., but bars close at 2 a.m. This means you can’t buy a 6-pack of beer at a grocery store after 9 p.m. to take home with you. If you want a few beers after 9 p.m., you have to knock them back in a bar, then drive home.
Another Wisconsin oddity is the proliferation of “dinner clubs” in the middle of nowhere, miles from any town. These are really bars, but their liquor license requires them to sell food. So people (many of them tourists) hit these places for drinks, then drive for miles back home, or to the resort, or campground. These clubs are typically found on county highways.
But that’s not all! Wisconsin has a county-option beer age. In Milwaukee County, you have to be 21 to buy or drink beer, but nearby Washington County has an 18 beer age. Teen beer bars are a major industry there. I’ve heard stories of dance floors ankle-deep in beer. On any given Saturday night, a large portion of Milwaukee’s teen population was on the roads, many of them drunk, and not all made it home alive.
Wisconsin has the stupidest, deadliest, most destructive liquor laws of any state. I’ve never understand why these laws persist. All the temperance ladies are long dead. The legislature must be too lazy to do anything about it. I can’t think of any other reason.

“Devon Archer told the House Oversight Committee on Monday that his former business partner, Hunter Biden, was selling the ‘illusion’ of access to his father, according to a source familiar with the closed-door interview, the latest development in the Republican-led congressional investigations into the president’s son.
“The source also reiterated that Archer provided no evidence connecting President Joe Biden to any of his son’s foreign business dealings.
“Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat on the panel who sat through the portion of Archer’s interview where he was questioned by Republicans, also said there was a lack of evidence connecting the president to his son’s foreign dealings.
“Goldman said Archer told the panel that Hunter Biden did put his father on speaker phone in the presence of business partners, but that business was never discussed. …
“Goldman told reporters during a break in the hearing that Archer later said that Hunter Biden putting his father on speaker phone with business associates was ‘part of the daily conversations’ between father and son, adding, ‘The witness was very consistent that none of those conversations ever had to do with any business dealings or transactions.’ Goldman said that it is ‘kind of a preposterous premise to think that a father should not say hello to the people that a son is at dinner with and that is literally all the evidence is.’”
https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/31/politics/devon-archer-house-testimony/index.html
Hunter may well have been influence peddling; but if so, his marks didn’t get anything for their money. And no father is responsible for what his adult son does, if he’s not a party to it.

All the business “rules and red tape” frustrated Jeff and his dreams from the very beginning. The scrubber in the vent system was incredibly expensive and was not among the numbers he “crunched”. Jeff had absolutely no idea what a triple net lease was, even after he signed one. Jeff went for his first two years just buying his own cleaning supplies from Costco. Until he failed a health inspection and got a ten day notice. After that he got an Ecolab account and something called a HACCP checklist. That was another $1,000 each month he had not “crunched”.
All in all Jeff is spending $5,000 more each month than any of his “number crunching” included. And he’s kept his prices low to keep his regulars loyal. But that makes it almost impossible for Jeff to raise his low prices more than a small amount very slowly. Being short on staff in the kitchen and bar, service is running slow, tips are declining, check averages are down, and check counts are falling.
Jeff’s bartender took a $22/hr job with full benefits flagging road and bridge projects that Senator Ron Johnson fought to kill. Now he gets to pick up his kids after school and eat dinner with his family every night.
One of Jeff’s two line cooks returned to the DR in April of 2020 and hasn’t been able to secure new work visas to the United States since because Republicans won’t allow any immigration legislation to make it out of committee.

By next year it is very likely that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee will be going to trial in no fewer than five separate criminal and civil proceedings, involving what could easily total more than 100 criminal counts.
In FEC filings made yesterday we learned that nearly all of Trump’s fund raising operations are broke, having poured nearly every cent they could scratch together into the monumental task of assembling credible teams of attorneys to defend a client with a well earned reputation for refusing to pay legal bills and then subsequently using his celebrity and media access to destroy the reputational value of those stupid enough to represent him.
And it isn’t even show time yet.
To keep this caterwauling, drunken dumpster fire moving forward they will need to double their monthly haul by this time next year. And that will still leave the campaign almost entirely reliant on the party and its own fund raising for media buys in the general election.

Over the years, Republicans have repeatedly challenged the Constitution, never more so than now. Even rightwing Supreme Court justices defy long-settled constitutional interpretations.
Their selection originalism, of course, is a crock. So is altering or making up case facts to justify their rulings; that’s downright dishonest.
The Constitution is a social contract between those now living. We don’t care how our slave-owning ancestors interpreted it; what matters is that all of us today, despite our many disagreements, agree to abide by its terms. That consent is what keeps our society from flying apart.
We liberals are holding up our end. We’re putting up with the structural imbalances of governing power that favor red states, the court’s wacky interpretation of gun rights, support of gerrymandering and corporate dark money in politics, and much more.
Republicans, though, seem hellbent on tearing up the Constitution. They’re saying, “We don’t agree to play by the rules anymore.” In Oklahoma, they’re probably betting that the court’s six conservatives, all Catholics, will ignore the Establishment Clause and fling the doors wide open to compulsory taxpayer funding of Catholic parochial schools. At the other end of the religious spectrum, Christian nationalists are eyeing a takeover of the public schools.
We liberals aren’t contemplating abandoning the constitutional order. If we don’t resist conservative subversion, and if courts don’t step in against constitutional violations like this one in Oklahoma, there simply won’t be one for us to participate in.

Biden would never do it.
But the independent expenditure committees are absolutely teeing this shit up. Again, that’s key to the strategy Julie Rodriquez and Quentin Fulks are mapping out. They plan to really empower state level orgs and indy groups to build the party base and help with local campaigning.
The RNC strategy is a criminal defense strategy.

@147 “A vice presidential nominee from Georgia on the 2024 ticket will have some sway with black voters, no?”
No. This CNN article gets it right. We live in an era of identity politics, but personal identity doesn’t matter, the partisan standoff is over national identity. You will get the conservative vote, period. You won’t move any voters who reject the conservative vision of America by being a black Republican from Georgia.
Key findings by political scientists studying the electorate can be summed up as follows: “Bill McInturff, the lead GOP pollster on the survey, points out that in the poll Trump led 93%-1% among those who voted for him in 2020, while Biden led 93%-3% among his 2020 supporters. “’The two partisan coalitions are locked down and difficult to move,’ McInturff said. Unexpected changes in the electorate’s composition – for instance whether youth turnout is higher or lower than anticipated – would be more likely to change the outcome in a rematch than movement toward or away from each man among the key voter groups, McInturff believes.”
While this comment specifically addresses a Biden-Trump rematch, this observation would be true regardless of who the candidates are, because any candidate matchup will “face the immovable object of the entrenched demographic and geographic divisions” that has locked voters in place. To wit: “’The two political parties are farther apart on average than they have been in our lifetime,’ said Lynn Vavreck, a UCLA political scientist and co-author of books on the 2016 and 2020 elections. ‘That makes it harder for people to think about crossing over to the other side.’”
The problem for Republicans is they’re stuck with a repulsive lying grifter con man who only cares about himself.

152,
Fuck you.
That wasn’t a brain fart. As a loyal Republican you neither know, nor remotely give a fuck who Tim Scott is, where he lives, or what state he represents in the Senate. To a loyal Republican voter like you his role makes all those things entirely irrelevant.
He’s an articulate, telegenic “Good One” that you racist fucks can parade across the television screens of FOX and RSBN viewers. His role is to provide some cover and a veneer of “diversity” for an otherwise entirely white male party.
Which also happens to be why he will not make it to the convention, much less become Trump’s choice to run as Vice President. Once Trump has secured enough delegates to control the convention advisers will begin vetting potential running mates. They’ll definitely be interested in a certain type of female in order to try to repair both Trump’s and the GOP’s massive liabilities among females likely to vote in key swing states. They will be women with a proven track record of running with success in swing districts and states. And they will look for a woman with credibility and unflagging loyalty to Trump who can act as a kind of interpreter, explaining Trump to those women voters. And Trump will demand that she look a certain way.
Elise Steffanik, Nancy Mace, etc.

A good place to look is Yellow’s competitors. Unless freight volume has gone down, and it hasn’t, they’ll be picking up Yellow’s market share and will need more drivers to haul it. It’s really breathtaking how little Doctor Dumbfuck understands about an economy.
Yes, shippers will pay more. The company that competed by charging less than cost went out of business. Predictably. The companies still standing are “stronger” because they charge enough to cover their expenses.

So if one of the “things they get done” is blocking student loan relief, that will bring student debtors flocking to their party and its candidates?

No, they didn’t. Hillary got 3 million more votes than Trump.
Trump became president in 2017 only because of a weird constitutional provision invented over 200 years ago to pacify the slave-owning colonies and preserve slavery.

The list of things Republicans have gotten done recently:
Revocation of citizens substantive right to individual privacy;
Selective cancelation of parental rights;
Selective cancelation of rights in healthcare;
Blocking widely popular legislation to raise taxes on wealthy corporations and individuals;
Kidnapping, defrauding, and dumping of legal refugees and asylum seekers;
Gutting the Voting Rights Act;
Closing polling places;
Limiting voting hours;
Outlawing voting by mail;
Canceling voter registrations.
“Getting things done” only really helps you if the things you get done are actually popular with the voters you need to persuade.

Illinois Gov. Jay Pritzker says DeSantis “isn’t smart enough to be president.” Ouch, that’s gotta sting.
Unfortunately, despite Ron’s Yale and Harvard degrees, I gotta agree with Jay. Ron can’t read.
Pritzker recently signed legislation allowing legal permanent residents and DACA recipients to serve as police officers in Illinois, pointing out they’re already allowed to serve in the U.S. military.
DeSantis whined, “Illinois is now letting illegal aliens become police officers.” Where did he say that, Ron? Where does the bill he signed say that? Learn to fucking read, for chrissakes.
Jay’s right, you’re too stupid to be president. Or Florida governor, for that matter.
