    Interesting that Energy Northwest is trying again with Nuclear Expansion. Small Modular Reactors probably the better way to go than finishing mothballed Plant 1. Most likely the Xe-100 module will be built at White Bluffs, as Energy Northwest has been demolishing portions of Plants 1 and 4.

    Looks like SMRs can be scaleable, if only they were viable when Energy Northwest was building Nuclear plants in tge 70s. Although Plant 2 , and its 1400MW is missed when it is down for refueling.

    Someone I wonder if Seattle City Light’s visionary Superintendent J.D. Ross would have supported Nuclear. He was never a fan of tge Lake Union Steam Plant, not because of environmental concerns, but because SCL had to buy bunker oil for it. As bonds were retired, rates went down, up until the 70s. Although that cheap power by tge 60s had become a liability. The Seattle First National Bank Building consumed as much power SCL’s first Hydro plant at Cedar Falls.

    As the Skagit Hydro project was completed, SCL kept Lake Union on standby for decades, just in case of major droughts. Seems the Nuclear Industry, with its position on renewables, is trying to put itself in the position as a balance, filling the gap when wind and solar are not at their peak.

    Noxious clouds of gas permeate air that even infants must breathe. Families fish, play and bathe in – and drink from – rivers and lakes contaminated with metals and industrial chemicals.

    They labor ten to twelve hours a day in sweltering heat and toxic mud, water and dust, in enormous pits hundreds of feet deep – hacking at rocky walls and in long, narrow tunnels that collapse with frightening frequency. Injured miners may get initial medical care; then nothing.

    In some areas, their clothing and skin are covered with mustard-colored dust – dried sulfuric acid from processing the ores. Almost everywhere, breast, kidney and lung cancers are rising, because adults, children and babies are exposed constantly to heavy metals and uranium in everything around them. High lead levels cause permanent neurological damage.

    Fifteen-year-old Muteba hobbles on crutches, his shattered, mangled legs dangling below his skinny waist. He‘s the only survivor from a cave-in that buried his brother and six others alive. There are thousands more like him – maimed, paralyzed, disfigured or dead.

    “Fair living” wages? Male artisanal miners receive around $2-4 a day – for output that might reach two 90-pound (40-kilogram) sacks of heterogenite cobalt ore. Women and children are typically paid half that, regardless of how much they produce or the purity of the ore they mine.

    Those who disobey mine overseers can get “locked in a shipping container with no food or water for up to two days.” At Kanina, two boys who tried to get more than the usual pittance for their 65-pound bags of ore were gunned down – murdered – by security guards.

    “Here it is better not to be born,” a mother lamented. A miner reflected, “Here we work in our graves.” Of course we fear the dangers, said another, “but if we do not work, we do not eat.”

    And still mining, tech and EV companies, ESG investment firms, politicians and climate zealots tell us they require and ensure “responsible sourcing” of Net Zero supply chains, good wages, safe working environments, and prevention of child labor and slavery.     No DRC buyer knows or cares where a quantity of cobalt ore came from, under what conditions it was mined, or whether children dug it out.     At least one marketplace is a remote night operation that can have no other purpose “than to launder artisanally mined cobalt into the formal supply chain completely our of view.” Every mixed load of ore is then thrown into acid baths for initial processing – before being sent out of country, mostly to China.

    We hear much about reparations for descendants of American slaves – but little about reparations for Native Americans, and zilch about helping these modern-day slaves.

    Nor do we hear from billionaires like Bill Gates, John Kerry, Mark Zuckerberg, George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. They lavishly fund “climate crisis” and “clean energy” campaigns. Have they spent one dime bringing decent wages, working conditions, living standards and medical care to Congo’s miners?”

    It won’t really hurt at all for corrupt SCOTUS perverts like Alito and Thomas to continue to defend their own corruption by claiming, against all common sense, that they are personally, as individuals, immune from any and all regulatory or other restrictive statute that would not otherwise interfere with or burden their judicial independence.

    There’s already a long and very well established legal history behind these kinds of disputes. Plenty of US Congress creatures used to claim they didn’t have to obey speed limits or any traffic laws. Narrowly viewed (as the law requires) laws like these do not burden the duties of a lawmaker in the execution of their elected office nor the independence of any judge.

    Another Wisconsin oddity is the proliferation of “dinner clubs” in the middle of nowhere, miles from any town. These are really bars, but their liquor license requires them to sell food. So people (many of them tourists) hit these places for drinks, then drive for miles back home, or to the resort, or campground. These clubs are typically found on county highways.

    But that’s not all! Wisconsin has a county-option beer age. In Milwaukee County, you have to be 21 to buy or drink beer, but nearby Washington County has an 18 beer age. Teen beer bars are a major industry there. I’ve heard stories of dance floors ankle-deep in beer. On any given Saturday night, a large portion of Milwaukee’s teen population was on the roads, many of them drunk, and not all made it home alive.

    Wisconsin has the stupidest, deadliest, most destructive liquor laws of any state. I’ve never understand why these laws persist. All the temperance ladies are long dead. The legislature must be too lazy to do anything about it. I can’t think of any other reason.

    Their selection originalism, of course, is a crock. So is altering or making up case facts to justify their rulings; that’s downright dishonest.

    The Constitution is a social contract between those now living. We don’t care how our slave-owning ancestors interpreted it; what matters is that all of us today, despite our many disagreements, agree to abide by its terms. That consent is what keeps our society from flying apart.

    We liberals are holding up our end. We’re putting up with the structural imbalances of governing power that favor red states, the court’s wacky interpretation of gun rights, support of gerrymandering and corporate dark money in politics, and much more.

    Republicans, though, seem hellbent on tearing up the Constitution. They’re saying, “We don’t agree to play by the rules anymore.” In Oklahoma, they’re probably betting that the court’s six conservatives, all Catholics, will ignore the Establishment Clause and fling the doors wide open to compulsory taxpayer funding of Catholic parochial schools. At the other end of the religious spectrum, Christian nationalists are eyeing a takeover of the public schools.

    We liberals aren’t contemplating abandoning the constitutional order. If we don’t resist conservative subversion, and if courts don’t step in against constitutional violations like this one in Oklahoma, there simply won’t be one for us to participate in.
