“In a dissent from the Supreme Court’s order pausing mifepristone restrictions from taking effect, Justice Samuel Alito said there were ‘legitimate doubts’ that the Biden administration would have followed a court decision that went the other way.
“’Here, the Government has not dispelled legitimate doubts that it would even obey an unfavorable order in these cases, much less that it would choose to take enforcement actions to which it has strong objections,’ Alito, one of the court’s conservatives, wrote.”

I have legitimate doubts that Alito knows how to be a judge. Real judges don’t speculate what the parties before them might or might not do after a ruling; they just issue their rulings, and deal with any issues of enforcing them as they come up. I think Alito is a GOP operative.

No Democrat wants her to be president in the event that Joe Biden dies in office after possibly getting re-elected. It’s a quandary. They are probably looking at how FDR got rid of Henry Wallace back in 1944 to see how they can convincingly get Harris out of the picture.

@15 – The Democrats and Republicans are just the opposite sides of the same Big Government, Interventionist coin. Both want to maintain an American Empire that we can no longer afford and is totally at odds with our Constitution.
America should deal at arm’s length with all nations, especially our so-called allies. It’s time to shrink the empire.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@11 “The speaker’s debt-limit plan didn’t gain any Democratic support”
That “plan” cuts spending by 9%, then limits spending growth to 1% a year for 10 years. With (1) the military budget exempt, (2) inflation, and (3) population growth, it results in huge spending cuts for the rest of government (except Social Security and Medicare). The “plan” also rescinds funding of IRS enforcement against wealthy tax cheaters, which will add to deficits by reducing government revenue.
You seriously think any Democrats would vote for this?
Roger Rabbit spews:
The media describe McCarthy’s plan as an initial bargaining position, but he has only a 4-vote margin, and several GOP House members are making it clear this is their final compromise, which they came to only very reluctantly, and it’s not clear McCarthy has the votes even for this.
Democrats can’t possibly agree to this. The McCarthy budget would gut air traffic control, workplace safety enforcement, food stamps, a host of other things. They would be slaughtered by their voters. Both sides say they want to avoid a default, but accidents can happen. The stock market has yet to react to that growing possibility.
Roger Rabbit spews:

And what happens to McCarthy if it isn’t? What wiggle room does he have? Looks to me like he’s got none.
And you call me a dumbfuck …
Roger Rabbit spews:
The easiest path to a debt ceiling increase is through the Democratic caucus with a handful of Republicans who aren’t kamikazes.
A much harder path is all 222 Republicans, or at least 218 of them, standing behind McCarthy’s plan as take-it-or-leave-it.
Harder still is McCarthy getting his caucus to compromise with the Democrats. He barely got them to compromise with each other.
I suspect some purple-district Republicans are doing some serious soul-searching already.

Let us now recall that Speaker is a constitutionally defined position irrespective of parties. It may be that Brave Kevin relied entirely and exclusively on Republicans to win election (barely, eventually) to the Speakership, but it is in fact his job to pull together the votes to support his legislation .
Of course we shouldn’t be surprised that Brave Kevin’s supporters are demanding that Dank Brandon come to his rescue. Nobody understands the weakness of Republicans better than a Republican. But Democrats know better than to throw a lifeline to their enemy.
To gain the gavel Kevin was forced to agree to empower, protect and support an extremist minority of partisan shit stains like Gym Jordan, Lauren Boebert, Chip Roy, Matt Gaetz, and Marge. When he did that he abandoned bipartisanship and negotiations.

This ain’t December, anymore. McCarthy has demonstrated quite a bit:

A deputy instructed Mr. Pelham to put his gun down, but he continued to wave it until re-entering his home. The result is a growing longevity gap between men and women. In the United States, life expectancy in 2021 was 79.1 years for women and 73.2 years for men. That 5.9-year difference is the largest gap in a quarter-century.

Also in the news:
In October, Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis proclaimed crime in New York City was “out of control” and blamed it on George Soros… In May 2022, hours after 19 children were murdered at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott swatted back suggestions that the state could save lives by implementing tougher gun laws by proclaiming “Chicago and L.A. and New York disprove that thesis.”
In reality, the region the Big Apple comprises most of is far and away the safest part of the U.S. mainland when it comes to gun violence, while the regions Florida and Texas belong to have per capita firearm death rates (homicides and suicides) three to four times higher than New York’s. On a regional basis it’s the southern swath of the country — in cities and rural areas alike — where the rate of deadly gun violence is most acute, regions where Republicans have dominated state governments for decades.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Did any of you read it?
Yeah. Me either.
I just can’t justify paying money to Rupert Murdoch so he can pay some whining delinquent like Tucker Carlson to tell blatant, acknowledged lies. If I needed lies I’d read the Shit-lord crybaby’s posts about imaginary “FB friends from CO” or his enormous wealth accumulated from brilliant market timing moves, like going long on TSLA right before the stock dropped by more than half.
But rather than read predictable lies from the WSJ, instead maybe let’s think about the shift we are seeing from Republicans like the Shit-lord crybaby.
They are figuring it out. Slowly. But unmistakably. It is dawning on them that Trump will win. The field isn’t developing the way they had hoped. DeSantis’s political skillset is clearly limited to stunts and culture wars mud fights. He isn’t breaking out of that box. Trump alumni are not obtaining any traction at all from the Trump support network. And they are not winning over the remnant never-Trump network either.
There is still time for a Republican “third way”. But there appears to be zero appetite for that from partisan voters who take part in party primaries. They either want genuine, pure Trump, or a “less baggage”, watered down version of Trump. And the pure, uncut Trump is preferred by addicts 2 to 1.
So Trump has pulled into a commanding poll lead already. He continues to dominate fund raising, even with only limited support from the JFCs and large donors. He probably won’t stall unless somebody does something to make his growth of support stall. And so far nobody has emerged capable of doing that. Not even criminal indictments will slow him down.
Trump is probably assured of the nomination. So in contemplating Biden’s candidacy for reelection it makes sense to do it in this context. Biden, whatever his age, will face Trump. And so what will that look like?
Well, again disregarding Biden’s age, and even disregarding his performance in office, a challenger facing an incumbent has the inescapable task of presenting their own record, their character, and their messaging to persuadable voters in swing states as a necessary alternative. That is, it often is not enough for any challenger, however politically talented, to present their vision as “better”. But rather it is required that a challenger establish the need for change first. A “referendum” instead of a “choice”. And this is because most of these persuadable voters in swing states are not politically engaged. They aren’t invested in these debates the way we are. They don’t care that much. They might not even vote at all. But when they do they often start out with the presumption that “they all suck equally”. And without a reason to intervene, reelecting the same guy (who sucks) is the lazy result if that guy hasn’t fucked you personally in some way.
So of course Trump has a big challenge in portraying “Biden’s America” as a post-apocalyptic hellscape of looming threats that only he can confront. And while this is a popular and engaging message within MAGAland and among MAGA Republicans, among largely disengaged non-partisan voters in swing states these claims are regarded as risible and met with plenty of eye-rolling dismissal. Making these matters a bit worse is that fact that far too often the claimed threats that start out within the plausible realm, “parental choice” and “religious freedom”, soon drift into incoherent and unrecognizably paranoid MAGA group hysteria about “transgenderism” and “VAX TRUTH”. These evolved “fears” may serve to help MAGA and Q cultists gain control of a local health district board or even a local school board, but they won’t help Trump win swing voters where he needs them most.
But then there is the alternative vision that Trump offers. The non-aligned and major national media have predominantly ignored reporting on that, perhaps hoping he’ll go away, but probably just too busy covering the larger shit show that is Trump. So outside of MAGA world Trump’s alternative vision is strangely unknown. So what is it? It’s interesting, for sure.
Trump says he will (all subject to change/modification at any time):
– Place the entire federal workforce under his direct control, eliminating federal civil service and then systematically purge the entire workforce of any employee who is not blindly and unquestioningly loyal to him exclusively;
– Reorganize the Department of Justice to arrest, indict, and prosecute all federal employee whistle-blowers of any kind;
– Implement a “bounty” program offering a cash payment to private citizens or public employees who uncover and report “disloyalty” on the part of federal employees;
– Place all federal elections under the control of an as yet unnamed federal agency under his direct control;
– Implement a national voter registration and ID system administered through an as yet unnamed department under his direct control;
– Impose a nationwide ban on abortion at conception at the federal level through the FDA (not clear how this would work);
– Implement mandatory nationwide stop-and-frisk (also not clear how this would be done);
– Authorize the active federal forces of the Department of Defense to deploy into US cities upon his command to fight “street crime”, disrupt criminal “gangs”, and locate, detain and deport all immigrants without authorizing documents at the time of their detention;
– Establish and build from scratch new “clean”, “beautiful”, and “safe” “Freedom Cities” featuring “flying cars” on “underused” federal lands like National Forest lands and National Parks lands;
– Through another as yet unnamed federal agency Trump will enforce “new standards” for “truth” on all major media, particularly broadcast media and large media corporations;
– Impose mandatory prayer in all public schools at all grade levels;
– Develop and impose new curriculum at the national level on all states and school districts placing an emphasis on “patriotism”, “loyalty” and “respect for tradition”;
– Authorize parents in every state, through a nationwide voucher program, to obtain state and federal taxpayer dollars and spend them as they see fit on whatever school or educational program they deem appropriate for their child;
– Impose local elections of public school principals on all school districts and all states in which only parents with enrolled students may cast ballots.
It’s very important to remind ourselves at this point how much of Trump’s extreme campaign rhetoric in 2015 and 2016 was ridiculed and dismissed, by Democrats and others certainly, but also and most importantly by Republicans. And then we must remind ourselves about precisely how much of it Trump actually went on to at least try to implement. He faced pushback, of course. And he mostly failed in the end. But the point is he means exactly what he says. Yes, these are ideas intended to excite and energize the MAGA base. They are also ideas that he would absolutely try to implement if he became President once again.
It isn’t an alternative vision that is likely to win over large numbers of non-aligned, disengaged, swing state voters. But it may make him the most popular Republican nominee in a generation, within his own party.
This makes the odds of Trump winning in November much worse than they ever were in 2016. But clearly folks, the stakes have never been higher.
What an asshole. I bet it’s a Republican. spews:

On the looming debt ceiling disaster:
“I don’t think lawmakers act until they get calls from investors and others in the business community saying: ‘What are you doing?’ But we’re not hearing those voices yet, because they think lawmakers have always done the right thing and acted just in time,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics. “It’s a very dangerous drama playing out here.”
The administration’s attempts to enlist the support of business executives may also prove unsuccessful. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients has personally asked top business leaders to advocate for a solution to the debt ceiling debate, according to two people familiar with the matter, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private remarks. But corporate America doesn’t have as much clout with the GOP as it did in the Obama years, and it’s not clear such measures will be effective with the House conservatives who nearly derailed McCarthy’s leadership bid earlier this year.

It’s absolutely concerning and it shouldn’t be.
But I take considerable comfort from the unmatched weakness, and cringing servility of the Republican Speaker. And I suspect the markets do too. There seems to be no anticipatory trend emerging that would price into the market any expectation that Kevin McCarthy can hold House Republicans in line and break the economy by bankrupting the Treasury.
What an odd thing it must be to be Kevin McCarthy. Unimaginable, really. It is said that he’s a fantastically stupid and shallow person, at least for someone wielding that power. So perhaps that immunizes him from the humiliation. But to see it played at before your very own eyes, that even as you and your colleagues reach for the executioner’s axe, The Smartest Guys on Earth, with their collective necks stretched out before you on the block, are all snoozing peacefully, utterly confident that you can’t summon the strength to even lift it.
Enough House Republicans will break ranks. Of course they will.
They may even stampede to get across the aisle before time runs out and they once again wind up on the wrong side of destiny and humanity.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
I think socialism has always enjoyed broad support in the US going all the way back to our nation’s founding. You can argue that the reason for the first constitutional convention was to work out a limited set of essentially socialist principles to be implemented at the federal level to prevent the destabilization and dissolution of the union.
Pure, naked, market capitalist systems are inherently unstable. Even as such, they nonetheless require a huge public collective investment in public laws, public courts, and public law enforcement functions in order to survive at all. The growth and stabilization of capitalist system require yet further public investments.
All these mandatory, collective public investments in support of orderly markets have always been widely supported by Americans regardless of class or ideology. And they are all socialist interventions into the private sector.
We’ve all just been systematically trained not to think of them or refer to them in that way.
What an asshole. I bet it’s a Republican. spews:
One dem state legislator does the time-honored exercise of crunching the numbers and coming up with a plan:
The letter starts by acknowledging the obvious political reality that in a deeply divided country with an evenly divided Congress, bipartisan compromise is inevitable. And it acknowledges the economic reality that running big deficits not only stokes inflation but risks triggering a debt spiral in which interest payments eventually consume the entire federal budget. The immediate challenge, he writes, is to stabilize deficits so the nation’s debt grows no faster than the nation’s income.
To do that, Golden sets a target of reducing borrowing by $250 billion a year in each of the next two years. Half would come through spending caps such as those floated by Republicans: capping inflation-adjusted “discretionary” spending (everything other than Social Security and Medicare) at last year’s levels, along with rescinding student debt cancellation and recapturing unspent covid funding. The other half would come from raising additional revenue in ways long favored by Democrats: raising the tax rate on big corporations to 25 percent, imposing a surtax on corporate stock buybacks, and rescinding the Trump tax cut for individuals making more than $400,000 a year.

The younger and the urbans can’t afford a starter home, they can’t get paid a living wage. They cannot afford day care or health care. They lived by rules of capitalism and got screwed over repeatedly as the boomers, the 1%, and the corporations hovered up all the benefits. The younger and the urbans here are culturally much less bigots which is scaring the hell out of the olds and rural folk. The younger and the urbans are not angered and frighted by the “Socialism” boogyman that was used to block everything progressive. Which explains the apartheid political and cultural infrastructure the republicans enacting. For example, burning books that might lead the next generations to develop to empathy and tolerate diversity. Making it harder for younger people and urbans to vote. Gerrymandering. Defunding the State library system.
They only hate socialism if it helps everyone.
