Rt105 between Downtown Renton and tge Renton Highlands dies quite well multiple trips, with enough juice after tge last run to get to Metro South in Tukwilla. Rt107, Renton to Beacon Hill Station via Skyway with its multiple ascents and descents, 1and a half round trips.

    Almost every country in the world took a mortality hit during the pandemic. Developed nations for the most part are bouncing back, but the US is not. If Covid-19 had never happened, life expectancy in other developed countries would have remained flat or increased, but the US would still have lost a year due to the surge in violent deaths. By my calculations, Americans lost 9.4 million years of life to external causes in 2021 alone, more than the 9.1mn lost to Covid over the course of the entire pandemic. And these deaths continue to rise.

    Paying former sex partners to hide from voters that a candidate cheated on their marriage is not, itself, illegal.

    Having corporations pay sex workers for the purpose of benefitting a political campaign is.

    Whether it is American Media Inc. paying a sex worker for their silence, or The Trump Organization paying a sex worker for their silence, if the payments are made to benefit a political candidate then they are a criminal violation. Making the payments from a corporation is a crime. Accepting the payments is a crime. And taking subsequent, affirmative steps to hide the payments from discovery is a crime.

    And prosecuting these kinds of crimes is very routine.

    Trump’s defense of the payments centers on his claim that it was not for “campaign” purposes.

    But since the funds came from AMI and The Trump Organization, then if the purpose of the payments to the sex workers was “entirely personal” as Trump and his lawyers have loudly and frequently claimed, then he is obligated by law to have paid taxes on this as income.

    This is the basis for the violations that Trump’s corporate entities were found guilty of back in December. The company paid personal expenses to benefit certain employees as a way of increasing their compensation without the employees incurring additional taxes. The law is generally clear on these counts. And since the companies involved actively created the scheme and put it into effect on behalf of the employees the company was also guilty of tax fraud.

    Here, unless Trump’s and his lawyer’s claims are false, the payments to these sex workers were intended to benefit Donald J. Trump personally. Therefore his scheme to classify the payments as some form of retainer for legal services for the business is an obvious effort to avoid the income tax he would owe for that income spent on a purely personal expense.

    He’s fucked either way, actually. If the purpose of the payments is personal “to spare his illegal alien wife and autistic son” then he’s guilty of criminal tax fraud. And if the purpose of the payments was to benefit the campaign, then he’s guilty of criminal campaign finance fraud. By all accounts it appears that Trump and his strip mall lawyers are just now figuring this out.

Not only has he lied, and been caught telling outright lies in the media about his tax cheating, but he’s gone further and attacked the investigators, and urged his supporters to threaten and attack them. He’s fought with these investigators in every way conceivable, and in a few that might not even be legal. He’s formed joint defense agreements with nearly every witness in order to buy and control their testimony. As President he threatened witnesses when they were subpoenaed to testify before Congress.

    Dumbest editorial take this morning so far:

    NYT, Ankush Khadori, former fed prosecutor in private prac in NYC who is nurturing a media career, speculates rather breathlessly that once the cherry is broken on prosecuting a former president for financial crimes attached to that president’s businesses, then ANY shitty, unethical, local prosecutor like KEN PAXTON can drag a former president to trial to defend himself.

    Except…

    Trump is quite simply the only modern president to have launched their campaign for office while not first having divested themselves of their businesses and business income. Trump kept his dozens of companies, kept the income, stayed in charge, and used these businesses as a political tool both throughout his campaigning and his term in office.

    If Ken Paxton can find a canceled check from “BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA INC” paying off prostitutes, let him bring it.
    And in case you missed it, we already went through this charade with Whitewater.

    Some right wing hysteria is to be expected here, now that their Cheddar Jesus is finally being brought to answer to the laws he has flouted and ignored for decades. For them it is a moment of existential crisis. One of the new pillars of movement conservatism is crumbling before their eyes, and with it some part of their political future.

    And some of that right wing MAGA hysteria is going to amount to phony concern trolling, in the vain hope that by jeering the refs the visiting team bench can make a comeback in the final seconds before the horn. But nobody else should be fooled. Literally ALL of their concern trolling about precedent and moral hazard is predicated on complete falsehood.

    The biggest risk in prosecuting Trump is trying to do so, and failing to win a conviction. That’s really the only worry that Democrats should have. And the fact that MAGA Republican defenders of Trump aren’t even willing to think about that is very telling.

    It was one year ago today when the freedom fighters of Ukraine declared victory in their campaign to drive the GOP aligned Russian war criminals out of Kyiv region.

    During that bloody occupation by the Russian invaders more than 1,300 civilians were murdered, including 38 children, mostly by small arms fire.

    While AFU has very little to gain from such an attack, and perhaps plenty to lose, that doesn’t prove that Putin is responsible. There are certainly plenty of angry, militant Ukrainians and supporters of Ukraine, as well as Russian dissidents, who would conceive of an attack like that as a good thing.

    But the basic fact that pulverizes those perspectives is that Vladimir Putin is proven to have carried out precisely this kind of attack many times before. And in each case it has proved successful in achieving his political objectives. Putin will use this attack as a way to expand and intensify his control over Russian civic and private life, expand his authoritarian police state, seize greater control over law enforcement and the courts, crack down on businesses, seize assets, restrict movement, crush dissent, and defy international criminal courts as they pursue him and his military for the sickening war crimes they are committing in Ukraine. And there is substantial risk that Putin will at least consider using this attack to shift toward more vicious and more frequent war crimes in Ukraine, now that the conditions on the ground have turned against him once again.

    Putin is undeniably the person who stands to gain the most from any series of terrorist attacks inside Russia. And if Putin is behind this, then expect it to be a series of attacks, spaced deliberately apart in time and location, allowing the state controlled media to fully inspire and exploit a public backlash. This is Putin’s one-trick-pony dance move.

    The laboratories of democracy are running a new experiment: universal school choice, or funding students instead of schools. We don’t know whether it will work, but it will be a key reform to evaluate in the coming years.

    Judge Marchan is going to do what he does.
    And he has a duty to protect due process in his courtroom.

    But I think it would be a mistake for Bragg to support any sweeping gag order on Trump or to make such a motion. It would not slow Trump down one bit. And Bragg certainly realizes that.
    And the consequences of imposing such an order and then either enforcing it or failing to enforce it make the value of such an order minimal in my opinion.
