    Siemens opening up a second railcar plant in the US. This one will be in Lexington, NC. They were out of room to expand Sacramento, plus tge new facility will also do overhauls. NC and Virginia have been good founders of passenger rail, no matter what party is in charge, and could be the new plants first customer. Tge equipment on the Piedmont needs replacing, tge current coaches were built for Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern in tge 60s. A few years ago, they tried purchasing Ringling Bros equipment for spare parts.

    The Sacramento plant was built when San Diego made a repeat order.     The DHS Office of Inspector General found that three different divisions within the Trump-era DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis had either collected intelligence or identified potential violent threats and did not release that information in in reports outside the department prior to January 6 – instead emailing threat information to local Washington, DC, partners before the attack in a way that was “not as widely disseminated” as its usual intelligence products. Such threats, the report said, included storming the Capitol, targeting politicians and law enforcement and “sacrificing their lives while conducting violence.”

    This from GAO last week:

    The FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police had seen “threats that were true or credible” days ahead of the assault on the Capitol building, the report said. But much as with the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, a failure by multiple agencies to share information and connect dots left those securing the Capitol unprepared for the onslaught.

    “Some agencies did not fully process information or share it, preventing critical information from reaching key federal entities responsible for securing the National Capital Region against threats,” the report said.

    The GAO report also revealed specific tips that were obtained by some federal agencies ahead of the attack. For example, the Capitol Police obtained information “regarding a tip that a member of the Proud Boys had recently obtained ballistic helmets, armored gloves, vests, and purchased weapons, including a sniper rifle and suppressors for the weapons.”

The GAO found that “14 products included an assessment of the likelihood that violence could occur.”

    The report singled out the FBI, concluding the agency “did not consistently follow policies for processing tips.”

    This does not include Muriel Bowser’s decision not to accept Trump’s offer of National Guard troops because she did not want the optics of militarization in her city. And it wasn’t just her.

    Senior Army official Lt. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, director of the Army Staff, said on the call he couldn’t recommend that Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy authorize deployment, Sund and others on the call told the Post. Piatt reportedly said, “I don’t like the visual of the National Guard standing a police line with the Capitol in the background,” the Post reported.

    It would be more than three hours before any National Guard troops arrived, well after the damage at the Capitol had been done.

    Even during the riot, this asswipe was worried about the optics of the National Guard protecting the nation.

    Plenty of blame to go around, a lot of it to be heaped on Trump. But enough of this bullshit that signs were missed, since so many of them were caught – and caught early – but not acted upon. Many branches of the federal government failed Congress that day.

    Yesterday I wondered about the fate of the monies held by Silicon Valley Bank but not covered by FDIC (or other) insurance.

    As of December, roughly 95% of SVB’s deposits were uninsured, according to filings with the SEC.

    From what I read, the FDIC has created a new bank and holding company for the SVB customers. The insured deposits will be available on Monday. For the uninsured deposits, a dividend will be paid up front to those deposit owners, and the SVB assets will be sold in an organized manner, with the proceeds of those sales allocated to the uninsured deposit-holders.

    Which doesn’t help to make payroll, and if you just issued new shares and got $50 million for it and parked that $50M in SVB, you might be pretty well fucked when it’s all over. Or, at least, your shareholders might be.

    Unless, of course, First Vegetable Joe Biden decides that Queen YLB’s fucked kids should pay the tab by bailing out the PE firms and their wealthy shareholders.

    Some analyst from RAND probably did a careful enough study and figured out that the routine use of regular commercial airline services by some personnel assigned to highly classified projects could be tracked well enough to give an adversary nation-state at least a partial picture of what they were up to. Cop official signed sworn reports state unequivocally that they surrounded the tent, gave verbal commands, THEN the suspect ‘fired without warning’ causing officers to open fire into a tent they were unaware of the number of occupants. Not possible. If the officer was shot, as the official report states, four minutes earlier it cannot be that he fired AFTER verbal commands. But we can’t have a self defense claim so despite the written reports….they tell the media it was simultaneous. Media reports dutifully. Copaganda.

    The only other explanation is cops gave commands, suspect fires, cops wait four minutes to fire back.

    Conveniently the gun, which the family suggests is friendly fire that shot the officer four minutes earlier shows up in the tent. Multiple witness statements and family statements say the deceased did not own a firearm.

    Of course all this delay could easily be proven by bodycams so a normal person would wonder why 100% of the officers involved in this area of the park had them switched off or malfunctioning.

An invisible accounting takes place. “Free riders” accumulate a care “debt”. And as that “debt” accumulates over time the individual “free riders” and their near kin gradually receive less care.

    Modern capitalism short-circuits all this in a number of important ways. But probably the biggest way is how modern capitalism inveighs against the perfectly natural instincts to care and to account for caring. This is done by labeling care and accounting for care as “evil”. Care is called “socialism” or “communism” or “Godless tyranny”. Accounting for care is labeled “class warfare” or even inverted and called “jealousy” and “envy”. At the same time “free riding” behaviors are portrayed as virtuous and even heroic.

    These messages and this framing are inculcated among the enormously wealthy, regardless of their individual political leanings. They all understand that in order for society to continue to sustain their exceptional “free riding” differential of care, the accounting for care has to be suppressed. For their immense wealth to survive society must be trained, as they have been trained, to be indifferent to suffering, at least to some extent.

SVB did the paperwork, collected fees for doing so, and then managed the funded cash until it was ready to be drawn down according to the terms of the offering agreements. SVB put the money into US paper, as Queen YLB herself noted.

    The risk to SVB Queen YLB does not understand was NOT in the creditworthiness of its customers. The risk was going too long on purchased US paper, and being caught with its pants down when rates spiked.

    If Berkshire bankrolls the newly created bank’s deposits, which are protected by US paper with known maturity dates, the risk to Berkshire is…what, exactly? That there may be a further increase in rates, driving down the value of the paper? Queen YLB has already told us that when the paper matures, the risk disappears. And Berkshire will purchase at a steep discount.

    There’s much more similarity to what Berkshire did with BofA and with WFC than there is with what it did with L3, YLB.

    • Although it’s not being discussed, I suspect that some of the paper SVB purchased isn’t US Government-backed. Whether muni or ST corporate, I suspect it isn’t something the Treasury will take on.

A growing segment of the Republican Party now sees itself as being both morally and transcendentally righteous, while they are simultaneously disadvantaged by the institutions of democracy. These Republicans are increasingly convinced that they have a duty to operate outside those institutions of democracy. And that growing radicalism is increasingly becoming violent and insurrectionary, even to the point of being revolutionary.

    But while this shift in ideology among regular Republican voters has gained strength, especially under Trump and FOX News manipulation, it appears to be repelling and frightening to more and more swing voters who just aren’t that invested in politics to begin with. They are more likely to be radicalized about NFL rule changes than about gender affirming health care.

    I think the biggest job for Democrats in the coming year will be to draw attention to this battle among Republicans over their growing radicalization and rejection of democratic institutions. Claims like mine here, that Republicans and Republican candidates are becoming a dangerous, radicalized mob, have much greater credibility among these swing voters when those claims are being made by a former Republican Vice President.

    Bitcoin smells a bailout.

    Bitcoin is the most evil of crypto to be sure.. Bitcoin mining takes the electricity use of what? An Italy, a Finland? That’s fucked up..

    Being the first crypto, it’s also a dinosaur technically..

    Ethereum, the #2 crypto, was a bit of an improvement, technically, over bitcoin at first but still had the same “evil” electricity usage profile. That has changed. Ethereum has transitioned to using only a tiny fraction of the juice, but it’s still “evil” in that it has severe technical shortcomings.. All the bad hacks you hear about in the crypto space are mostly in the Ethereum ecosystem.

    Also Ethereum is “evil” in that the transition to the new energy conserving validation protocol vastly rewarded the relatively few established insiders and big winners of the ecosystem.

    If you’re into crypto there are alternatives that have learned from the pioneer’s mistakes of both Bitcoin and Ethereum. But it will take some time for them to gain traction against the incumbents.

    First of all Circle has little to do with Bitcoin. It’s the company behind a stablecoin, USDC, a digital token that maintains a peg to the US Dollar. And USDC is not even the dominant stablecoin. That would be USDT which backed by an outfit called Tether.

    Now the crypto space needs stablecoins to value crypto like Bitcoin and Ethereum. When you want to cash out your bitcoin or ether, you trade it for a stablecoin and then cash it out at an exchange like Coinbase.

    Fed and Treasury is forestalling a depositor panic.. Reading further into zerohedge:

    just 4 days ago Powell was telling Congress he could hike 50bps and here we are now using taxpayer funds to bail out banks that have collapsed because they couldn’t even handle 4.75% and somehow the Fed has no idea!
