    Because Kilauea is not Mount Pinatubo 1991, Railfan. Perpetual eruption means constant steam and lava leakage and no pressure buildup.     When I first saw that the 11th Circuit ruling tossing Trump’s stupid Cannon lolsuit and vacating all of her orders was 20 pages I admit I was slightly surprised. I figured it might be five pages max.     He’s also said that it is his current plan for Twitter to obtain 50% of it’s operating revenues from user fees.

    – Currently 238 million users according to the company’s own most recent public earnings statement;
    – Q2 reveneus of $1.2 billion;
    – Q2 expenses of $1.5 billion;

    With a mixed revenue model where 50% comes from user fees (with subscribers enjoying a 50% reduction in ad load) and the rest comes from advertising revenues, the company still needs a 10% subscription rate among users. Compare that to YouTube with less than 3% uptake for premium music and video streaming content.
    The reality is Twitter subscription base is likely to be much less than 10% or even less than YouTube’s 3%. So what that means is that Twitter has to become a much, much smaller boutique sized company with much less to offer. Because the only way he can acheive his goal is to reduce revenues and to do that without going into bankruptcy he has to cut workforce, cut vendor contracts, cut leases, and cut R&D.

    That makes it a very different type of company offering a very different user experience to a very different type of user. Tesla is not Honda, and it will never be Honda. Different buyers, different buying experience, different owner experience, etc. And obviously much, much smaller. There probably is some kind of conceivable glide path to landing this plane where Musk seems to be heading. So far the only part that seems to be working, although very badly, is the cost cutting. It remains to be seen if he has the tools to pull it off successfully.

    The one tool he has been most reliant on throughout his public career is lying. And he seems to be making very good use of that in the case of Twitter.
