It’s not just the Nuclear Submarine technology that Australia is looking to buy from the US and UK. Looks like the RAN is looking to acquire Romahawks, although that is one missile we rarely export. Right now its just the Royal Navy, as the only user outside the US Military. The RAN will be third operator, and the RCN 4th.
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/42408/australia-to-buy-tomahawk-cruise-missiles-will-get-at-least-eight-nuclear-submarines
The potential sale of Tomahawks to Canada will be interesting. The outgoing Halifax Class frigates were designed for hunting Soviet subs during the Cold War. The new Canadian Surface Combatant was designed with new missions in mind. One is maintaining Canadian Sovereignty over the Northwest Passage, and a combination of Tomahawks and Naval Strike Missiles will be part of that.
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/37506/canadas-new-frigate-will-be-brimming-with-missiles
Also, with France upset over the cancellation of their contract, wonder if they will change their tune when the Charles de Gaulle needs spare parts for it’s catapults. The Rafale M is a great aircraft, but it can’t get off the Flight Deck without assist from the aging steam catapult. Since the de Gualle went over budget, it became opa one-off class like our CVN-65.
EvergreenRailfan spews:
One of the reasons why Australia may need Tomahawks and Hypersonics when available, is a new variant of China’s DF-21 IRBM. It’s been adapted to be used in the Anti-Ship role, out ranging our Harpoon, Naval Strike Missile, and Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DF-21?wprov=sfti1
One counter to the DF-21 is to boost the fleets ABM Capabilities, which is being done with new variants of the Standard Missile. The Army and Marines are working on land based longer range missiles to be deployed from forward islands. It’s one of the reasons we withdrew from the INF Treaty. Just wished we negotiated the exit better. At least when we scrapped the ABM Treaty, Bush negotiated the reduction of deployed nuclear weapons. The Russians were using the Nixon-era treaty to handicap the effectiveness of the Ground Based Interceptors of the NMD System.

24)Was thinking about Tom Clancy’s Executive Orders, and part of the plot was a co-ordinated bio weapons attack using a weaponized mutated strain of Ebola. It was an airborne strain, spread at trade shows. What Iran didn’t count on, was at Johns Hopkins University, during an all-departments meeting about the crisis at their hospital, the head of optometry had his assistant sit in for him, First Lady Ryan. The CDC had not yet briefed President Ryan, and Mrs. Ryan had her secret service agent with Marine One on Speed Dial.
After being briefed about the number of cases, the virus, and about an option called Curtain Call, President Ryan took action, went with Curtain Call, a hard lockdown worse than what we saw last year, with Interstate Travel shutdown, only essential truck traffic running under military escort. The former VP, who Ryan replaced as V.P. prior to the attack on the Capitol (Don’t know how to describe that part from Debt of Honor, the pilot acted alone out of grief, his brother and son were killed in the war Japan had launched), used judges he got appointed to strike down the order.
The fatalities were lower than what would have happened if Ryan had not been told about it, but the end result was a U.S. military barely able to deploy to prevent an invasion of Saudi Arabia. V Corps HQ had a briefer get sick and both heavy divisions were quarantined in Germany.
I miss Tom Clancy, he sure could write them. His non-fiction book Airborne had a mini-novel about a battalion of the 82nd being used to evacuate an embassy. The evacuees were non-combatants, but the operation was far from being a NEO.

36,
The “law and order mindset” is as much a “liberal” shibboleth as it is a “conservative”. You’ve seen it on display here quite often.
Historically white Americans in general, and particularly older white Americans have regarded “more police” as producing “more law and order”. Generations of white Americans have had this idea bred into them by their communities, the media, elected officials, and the culture.
But two big transformations are afoot that may change all that. The first is that in general white voters, and older white voters are now declining in their political influences. But this is not geographically uniform. The second is the ubiquity of small, pocket sized high definition video recording equipment and BWC equipment which now display to voters every day that “more police” generally produces “more violence and civil disorder”.
Roger’s post at 18 is an excellent case in point. SPD, operating under an ongoing consent decree to which they continue to object and litigate, now respond to a report of “an open door and cluttered living room” with ten police, including one armed with a tactical response weapon. The effect of the consent decree has been a massive decade long expansion of SPD promoted ranks. The number of patrol and detective Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, and even Assistant Chiefs has exploded, in response to demands for better training and supervision. And police response managers have then responded by escalating nearly every form of response at the point of origin.
The reason nobody is doing anything about the homeless, unmedicated schizophrenic pooping in your hot tub is because, according to your “police professionals”, it now requires a tactical response squad of ten supported by aerial reconnaissance with armored car backup. Seattle is not alone in this regard. Police in general, even with the protection of QI, are responding to public pushback against the murder of unarmed citizens by police on camera by insisting that the only way for them to “safely” avoid such murders is by escalating every encounter, no matter how benign.
Given the history and the persistence of the “law and order” mindset it is going to take years for all people to first recognize that an alternative to policing is required.
And you should resist your own ignorant impulse to reduce this issue exclusively to police misconduct. QI applies to all state actors. It even applies to thuggish Arizona public school officials who order the strip searching of an innocent 13-year-old girl falsely suspected of smuggling Tylenol based on an anonymous tip.

Not sure it cost her the election. But it had to be said, sooner or later. And I think the fact that she said it when she did has made a big difference in terms of how far we’ve come since she said it.
Let us recall with precision, shall we?
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? They’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully, they are not America.
But the “other” basket – the other basket – and I know because I look at this crowd I see friends from all over America here: I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas and – as well as, you know, New York and California – but that “other” basket of people are people who feel the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures; and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but – he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”
The people in the second basket, after four years of consistent Trump failure and corruption were given a stark choice by the GOP: either you join with the deplorables in the other basket, embrace The Big Lie, reject the vaccine, live your hate, and engage the fight to end democracy… or get the fuck out.
The result has been that the first basket has grown. But the second basket has shrunk. And at least in every election so far, the shrinking of the second basket has outpaced the growth of the first. Which though it may not have been guaranteed, was probable given the demographics. There just aren’t that many old, angry, ignorant white people left to be “energized” by Trump.
In the immediate aftermath of the election the phrase “basket of deplorables” did appear politically unwise. However, when viewed from 2021 it appears at least prescient. Once the voter file data from the 2020 elections became available, and the average 8 point shift in every state could be revealed and analyzed, the unavoidable conclusion is that a significant and decisive percentage of voters in the second basket left the GOP. And that transformation is ongoing and being accelerated by the Coup Cux Clan, pipe bombs, Proud Boys vandalizing churches, Delta surge, Abbott Uterus Bounty Hunters, and House and Senate Republicans falling in behind Trump.
The “deplorable” extremism of the GOP base is no longer a point of debate among serious people. It’s a given.

It isn’t generations of overt discrimination in housing and employment that have created “dependency”.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@54 A lot of those welfare queens are under the age of 10, and their moms still have the bruises inflicted by the former breadwinners now in hiding to avoid paying child support. 64)I remember a family fight costing my EWU Eagles a National Championship. It was just a player and his brother getting into a fight at the Cheney Zips. The younger brother had to go to the ER, and the player got a night in the Spokane County jail, and a suspension.

Love learning about my EWU Eagle opponents, including the bus systems if I can find any info online about them, Unitrans in Davis, CA is my favorite. Except for a few managers, most of the staff, whether drivers, cleaners, bus conductors (interesting reason why the have them), are students at U.C. Davis, as it is a service of the ASUCD.
The opponents we played yesterday, Western Illinois University, loved their mascot. It’s the only public school in the US to have permission from the Department of the Navy(and by extension DoD) to use the Marine Corps nickname, Leathernecks. It’s an homage to their coach and AD in the mid-20s, who served at Belleau Wood and Chateau-Thierry in WWI.
We almost let the, come back, key first down from our injured QB(I think it turned out to be a leg cramp), with a minute left saved the day.

@70 Larry Elder’s cure for inflation is to cut the minimum wage to $0.00 and pay reparations to the owner, er, I mean employer. Doctor Dumbfuck probably is fine with that.

@71 Well, I have no fucking idea what they’re doing, and they probably don’t, either. But I wouldn’t recommend jump-starting an airplane that way, especially in flight.

You want a stronger president? Okay …

That strong enough for ya? What do you want him to do? Invade those states? Have his AG prosecute those governors for mass murder?

You’ll get yourself into trouble fast mixing up racial and ethnic demographics in Texas like your poll does. Down there it’s absolutely fundamental that “white” and “Latino” often coincide. In other words, for a huge number of Texans (and Floridians) it is not “either/or”. It’s both.
So if you are phone polling and you don’t bother to differentiate, and instead you demand respondents choose, you get weird numbers (like your poll) and possibly weird, outlier results.
In Texas right now (pending Census final numbers) It’s believed that non-Hispanic whites are about 40% of the population, skewed older and with fewer children. It’s believed that African Americans are about 13%.
And Hispanic or Latin Americans of any race are also about 40% of the population. However average age is much younger with a much larger percentage under 18 and heretofore much lower rates of both registration and turnout. Every year those black and brown kids turn another year older.
Now, if you care to you can go back and compare the same poll results with your Orange Daddy from last year right before the election. Or even from February before the Trump Clap broke out and started the body pile growing.
You might learn a thing or two. And most of all what makes Texas such a vulnerability for Republicans is its size: 38 House seats and 40 EVs in a state where all the demographic trend lines have been slowly but steadily moving against angry, white Boomers for more than a decade. Can you name a Biden/Obama state that you believe you can flip next year? In three years? In seven? Texas is not a question of if. Just when.
Maybe not next year? Mkay.

Interesting story about the process around mail in ballots for tomorrow’s Federal Election in Canada. Elections Canada won’t even start counting them until they verified they didn’t vote in person and that doesn’t happen until Tuesday.

Calling an election in the Pandemic was risky for Trudeau. Polls showed the Liberals in majority territory in the lead up to the Election being announced, but have tightened, and Conservatives leading at one point in the National vote, but it’s the seat count that determines who will form the government. The Conservatives are leading in the West, and the Prairies, Liberals in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. The Conservatives have the NDP giving them a race in B.C, the Bloc is expected to do well in Quebec, but the Pandemic has made the right of Center Peoples Party a spoiler, gaining ground in opposition to the lockdowns and vaccine requirements.

I’m a fan of the CFL, always liked the different rules for gridiron football in Canada. They even have a Six-man version for small high schools in some provinces. Like the CFL even more, because in the 9 team league, 3 of the QB’s come from a traditionally teachers college outside of Spokane. The QBs in Calgary, Ottawa, and Montreal went to EWU. Although the feeds the SiriusXM Canada Talks channel gets for the games are the hometown teams radio station, only heard one election ad during the games I’ve heard, and it could not be helped, Toronto vs Hamilton, and Greater Toronto is the electoral battleground. It was interesting, the Tories railing against reckless spending, and promising to balance the budget, in 10 years.

Meanwhile in the German Federal Election, with less than a week to go, a Public Prosecutor has had the police raid the Finance Ministry over the Ministry’s Finance Intelligence Unit failing to inform police about banks laundering money. The Finance Minister is the Social Democrats Candidate to replace Merkel, and the SPD has overtaken the Union Bloc in the polls.

Even if Americans eventually figure out the pressing need for major alternatives to modern policing and the pressing need for reform of qualified immunity doctrine, there will still remain the pressing need to rid our nation’s police agencies of Nazis, Klansmen, mercenary gun-humpers, and radical extremists.
They will not do it on their own. That’s just not how police agencies work. Remember, had they been allowed to, the Minneapolis Police Department would have protected and exonerated Derek Chauvin and his accomplices.
