    For decades the emphasis has been on preventing a Gen. Jack Ripper scenario. All the challenges and checks are there to ensure that the order to release originates from the President. But there’s nothing to challenge or check that the President’s decision is “right” or even the product of a sound mind.

    Pelosi should know better. And if Miley said anything like that to her he should face a court martial.
    A lawful order from the President to release nuclear weapons must be obeyed. Anyone in the chain who determines that the order is unlawful can decline it (with very real consequences).     I tend to agree we should do everything we can to damage these future national leaders of the GOP now by closely associating them with the violent, racist, authoritarian ideology they now represent.     I voted for and supported a Republican lawmaker once.

    It was some years ago, before Trump. The Republican I voted for was an incumbent state senator. He is a military veteran, self employed, generally suspicious of raising taxes, and generally in favor of “reducing regulations”, but as you might expect seldom ever able to explain precisely what that means.

    But he’s also (or at least was) a huge supporter of public education, higher teacher salaries, increasing funding for public colleges and universities, civil rights (yes, especially 2A but not exclusively) and expanding voter access and ballot access. He even supports National Popular Vote.

    Around the 2016 GOP primaries he went through a couple of Sheriff’s calls to his rural home over DV, admitted to “pushing and choking” his wife, and they separated soon after. Not long after that he became an outspoken Trump supporter (I was done with him then). Then about two years into Trump, he got into a demented argument with a fellow GOP lawmaker in which he brandished a hand gun and threatened police. He was censured by his caucus, banned from committee rooms, and lost his next election.

    I will not be surprised to learn that he was present at the capitol on Wednesday. I will not be surprised to learn that he is charged. And I will not be surprised to learn that he barricades himself in his home and commits suicide-by-cop.

    Like Testicle-Taser Patriot, he is a metaphor for the modern fate of “conservatism”.

Then you learn that he’s hired one of his retarded sons to mow the lawns, but they’ve sold all the mowing equipment, killed the grass, and tripled the bill. The neighbors he and his pals “don’t like the look of” are being constantly hassled by the guards he hired. Their tires are being mysteriously slashed. One of their kids gets beat up. Suddenly the guards start carrying guns. A neighbor is shot.

    You and all the neighbors have had enough. You call an election and vote the asshole out. But he claims the election is a fraud. Even though he ran it and his pals did all the counting for him. He refuses to leave. Every day he goes door to door through the neighborhood trying to argue with everyone. It’s pathetic.

    But the new HOA president is sworn in and holds his first meeting at his house one day. So the asshole and his friends head over along with a local biker gang they invited, telling them they’ll get to pull train on the HOA president’s 12-year-old daughter. They surround the place and begin lighting fires. They rush the house and begin smashing windows and breaking down doors. They burst inside just as the HOA board escapes through the daylight basement and out through the greenbelt. They trash the house, shit on the floors, pee on the rugs, and steal the furniture. Furious that the daughter escaped, they kill the HOA secretary who couldn’t get out in time because of a bad knee.

    House traitors will not be so lucky. They’ll have to either vote or abstain. I think a great many Republican lawmakers will abstain. Then they’ll have to go back to their districts and explain it. It’s a political calculation entirely divorced from any sense of duty to oath or national allegiance.

    If they vote to impeach the violent racist baboon troop will come for them, if not in the form of a mob with torches, zip-ties, and lynching ropes, then in the form of a Qanon primary opponent.

    And if they vote against impeachment they lose all their PAC money and they have no way to run radio ads accusing their next Democratic opponent of hiding a socialist email server in Benghazi.

    I think the formulation that gets us out in front is to say that a vote to abstain is a vote for The Coup.
