There’s no reason for private insurance companies to take 25% to 28% of health care premium dollars off the top, before any health services are provided, when Medicare’s overhead costs are 1-1/2%. (So much for the rightwing arguments about “government inefficiency.”) Any cost-conscious businessman (and what businessman isn’t cost conscious?) choosing between the two systems wouldn’t have to think about it for 15 seconds.

    But as for us senior citizens “enjoying” benefits of Medicare not available to all, keep in mind the following: (1) We earned these benefits by paying Medicare taxes all of our working lives, and (2) the reason for Medicare in the first place is because many seniors are limited income and wouldn’t have health care care if they had to pay for private coverage.

    The proposal is to expand the Medicare system to cover everyone. But if you’re under 65 you would absolutely have to pay for it. Point is, you’d ultimately be paying less, once you account for elimination of the tax subsidy in the private employer provided system, the wage suppression, and the idiotic inefficiencies in a “market” system where “payer” is entirely insulated from any “pricing signals”.

    I can’t speak for all art school people, but I leveraged my education into a 25+ year career with good heath care, a pension and a 401K. I raised a family on my wages. I’m proud of my liberal arts career choices. but I’m lucky. I grew up in a time where my company still offered those benefits. The employees who came after me, do not have these options. The benefits I enjoy, have have been programmatically kept from them. They will never be allowed to earn the benefits I have.
    So I will vote for politicians who will do their best to lessen income inequality because:
    If the system was “winner gets a boat, loser doesn’t”…well that’s life.
    But if republicans want it to be “winner gets two boats, loser doesn’t get medicine”.
