    Interesting out of Australia, looks like the conservatives will hold, could still win a majority. Even they had thought they lost the House. One thing, everybody has to vote, and in Australia you can game Ranked Choice Voting. Most uses of it in the USA, voters can just vote for their first preference vote if they want, in Australia, voters must rank every candidate. So One Nation and United Australia were able to push their preferences towards the Liberal National Party in the state of Queensland. Also, They count the ballots by hand.

    But that doesn’t make him wrong. Know what does? His lifelong obsession with shoving the round peg of working class values into the square hole of economic conservatism. For what I can only pray would be the last time: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SOCIALLY LIBERAL, ECONOMIC CONSERVATIVE VOTE BLOC IN AMERICA. It does not exist.

    Either the people Bageant wanted the Democratic Party to appeal to will never, ever vote for another Democrat because we would actually allow “the blacks” to go to good schools, or they will never, ever vote for another Democrat because we would allow a woman to get birth control pills without her husband’s permission. That isn’t to say the Democrats shouldn’t campaign to these people. But the only morally defensible way to do it, the only way that doesn’t force us to keep right on losing again, and again, and again, is to focus on progressive economic policy. The policy that, while it might indeed benefit “the blacks” and “the Hebes” and “the sluts” and “the queers” equally, also embodies the promise of improving the lives of Bageant’s beloved “working class gene pool”. Wont get them all. Might not even get half. But whatever portion we get, it’ll be the portion that is willing to join the rest of us in the modern world of tolerance, respect, and social progress. As opposed to the portion who’d just rather sit drunkenly in the dark yelling at the television while cancer slowly consumes them… like Joe Bageant. I mean, fuck that dude.

    Under cross, if a def atty seeks to introduce prejudicial and/or irrelevant information about any witness that isn’t directly related to credibility it can be objected to and can be excluded. But the accused is entitled to challenge witness credibility. So any witness with a history of substance abuse, treatment for mental illness, swearing false statements, or failure to recollect events can be challenged on that basis. Given the overwhelming tendency for jurors to assume the credibility of police, this is particularly important in their case when they act as witnesses testifying in a criminal trial.

    So even without Section 50-a, a prosecutor can see to it that irrelevant questioning under cross is excluded. How often a police officer beats up his wife, threatens his children, stalks his mistress, threatens her family, fucks his police dog, or how much infant porn he has on his city issued laptop should not be introduced and can be excluded under the rules. What the police officer does on his off hours, in the privacy of his home with pet hamsters is a private affair and may remain private. Section 50-a does not help advance the course of justice or preserve due process.

    What it does do is protect shitty prosecutions based and false testimony and fabricated evidence. And it does it in a way that ensures (most of the time) that government attorneys can not be held legally responsible. They fought for the rule during the “war on crime/war on drugs” era in NY because they knew damn well from their own experience that many of the cases referred to them by NYPD were based on that kind of evidence and testimony. And they knew that they would never be able to achieve the kinds of targeted conviction rates, particularly in drug cases, if defense attorneys were able to challenge the credibility of undercover narcotics detectives who, during that era, were pretty much high all the time, and lying all the time. That may still be true. But who really knows? What we do know is that not even the prosecutor’s office is allowed to examine documents and other records demonstrating that a key police witness is a degenerate lying drug addict with a long history of swearing false statements and treatment for substance abuse. So they can’t be held accountable if they fail to disclose it under Brady.

    Sure didn’t have to be this way. Back in the before time when they controlled all the gubmit they could have actually done something instead of spending all their focus and energy on LOCK HER UP and praise for C’ville Death Cars. But I think the truth is they couldn’t. The Supply Side orthodoxies are just too well inculcated into their beliefs.

The ball was left with Mulvaney to come up with a funding plan that Senate Child Molesters could live with. They’ve been mostly radio silent ever since. But what little has bubbled up is not promising. Senate Rs are so far unwilling to approve any kind of tax hike. And Mulvaney has been steadily down playing the plan ever since. Also, there’s no good reason to believe that House and Senate Ds will go along without extracting some pain and humiliation, and maybe even some compliance with document requests. No good way out of this dead end that Ryan led them into. And once again they did this to themselves.

FOX News routinely passes along the work product of people like Jacob Wohl, Mike Cernovic, Jim Hofts, Michelle Malkin, Pamela Geller, Jerome Corsi, James O’Keefe, Lucian Wintrich, and James Guckert. And the problem is not with the identities or the biases of these “journalists”. The problem is with their well established track record of reporting unsubstantiated political bullshit. Ranging from “Crisis Actors”, to “Whitey Owes You”, to “Boat Full ‘O Dildos”, to “Birfer Troof” to “PizzaGate”, to “Nuclear Free Korea”, to “Beautiful Trade War”. These are all objectively false narratives lacking any basis in truth and without supporting evidence. It’s not just a little bit, or an “occasional lapse”. FOX News product design is based in large part on building audience with these kinds of stories.
    There is a difference. Comfort yourself if you must with false claims of “equivalence”. But there is a difference. And the difference is only apparent when your initial premise is not fatally flawed.
