    To put the sentence Judge Ellis gave Manafort in perspective, I’m familiar with a local domestic violence case here in Seattle in which a boyfriend beat up and nearly killed a woman, locked her dogs in her house, spread gasoline over the floor, and threw in a match. He got 48 months, the majority of which was for the dogs, and was released for good behavior (whatever that is) after serving two-thirds of it. So yeah, the 47 months Manafort got — which is only a month less and he didn’t even kill the dogs — looks like a harsh sentence, especially to all the crooked Wall Street bankers who got no time at all for bringing the economy to its knees.

    Btw, If an election official says you can vote and registers you to vote, isn’t that borderline entrapment? Maybe not in a strict legal sense, but certainly on a moral plane. And certainly some form of estoppel should apply here. After all, it’s ultimately the responsibility of election officials to determine voting eligibility, and a registrant should be able to rely on their decisions, unless he has lied about or concealed material information.

    Of course, any enlightened discussion about voting is just an academic exercise when Republicans are in power, because they’re against American citizens — including those who’ve served in the military, especially if they’re black — voting in their own country, and make a big deal of persecuting those who try.

    So obviously the SCO investigation was not terminated by the new Attorney General as easily duped Republican voters had vainly hoped and prayed. Very early to tell just how Barr will run DOJ in the next two years (of if he can even last that long under President Rage Baby). But at least a few early signs are somewhat promising.

    After stalling and lying about it for the past 15 months or so the DOJ yesterday revealed a letter from AG Jeff Sessions sent by his Chief of Staff at the time Matt Whitaker Sweaty Pink Meatball on Nov 22, 2017 to the US Atty for Utah John Huber. The letter instructed Huber to re-launch investigations into approvals granted for the sale of a portion of a Canadian uranium minerals company to a Russian ownership group more than six years earlier during the Obama administration. Late last year in court under oath, as well as in response to Congressional inquiries, top ranking Republican DOJ officials serving under then AG Jeff Sessions said no such letters ever existed. Yesterday the very same letters sent fifteen months ago somehow came into existence for the first time.

    Of perhaps even greater interest is the fact that prior to these letters being sent directing a US Atty to launch a probe targeting a political opponent of the administration, AG Sessions had testified under oath in Congress that he would recuse from any involvement in any such investigations or oversight owing to his service during the campaign as a campaign operative and political surrogate. In other words, he lied under oath.

    You know what this means? Yes, that’s absolutely right.
    This means still another criminal investigation by still another independent Republican run law enforcement office into still more alleged criminal obstruction by Trump administration Republican officials in still another completely different part of the United States. Again. And again. And again. And again.

    This really is “the status quo” for Republicans now.

    Playing “what if” games with history is popular, because it’s fun. But there are too many variables to actually say what would have happened if this or if that. It’s nothing more than a parlor game.

    I don’t know what would have happened if the U.S. had stayed out of World War 1. Neither do you. No one does.

    So, in no way does this kind of thought experiment inform today’s policymaking. What we can infer from logical thinking, however, is that if we weren’t the world’s policeman, either someone else would be, or the world order would be replaced by a world anarchy.

    We’ve hedged our bets about that for 73-plus years now, and what I can say for sure is, we’re still free and still here. The axiom “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind.
