One issue with the California high speed rail line was/is, How It enters the Bay Area. The plan to enter the city is to use Peninsula line, and electrification work is underway for that. The decision to enter the Bay Area via Pancheo Pass was made before it went to the ballot. Altamont Pass would have served Tracy and Modesto, but bypass San Jose, crossing the Bay at Dumbarton.
https://transbayblog.com/2008/01/11/altamont-bypassed/
A BART Extension into the area was supposed to be happening, but it was.taking too long, plus those counties were not all members of BART. San Mateo county opted out, gets some service, but does not pay much, Santa Clara opted out early, but is paying billions to bring BART down the East Bay. With the Tri Valley extension’s perennial backburner status, it led to the California tradition of a new transportation authority being created(Foothill Transit and the Antelope Valley Transportation Authority being created in parts of LA County that thought the LA MTA was not adequately serving them).

“Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday defended the possibility of taking money away from building a middle school in Kentucky in order to erect President Donald Trump’s border wall, saying children need a ‘secure border’ before a school.
Graham was grilled on CBS’ ‘Face the Nation’ about money Trump will likely divert to build the wall in the wake of the president’s declaration of a national emergency after he failed to get the funds from Congress.
“Host Margaret Brennan noted that some $3.6 billion of diverted funds could come from ‘military construction efforts, including construction of a middle school in Kentucky, housing for military families, improvements for bases.’ She asked Graham: ‘Aren’t you concerned some of these projects … are now going to possibly be cut out?’
“Graham responded that ‘it’s better for the middle school kids in Kentucky to have a secure border.’ He promised the kids would eventually get their school, but added, ‘Right now we’ve got a national emergency.’” And then he goes on to blame the opioid addiction crisis on lack of a border wall.

If you go to /r/AskTrumpSupporters and see what they say when people ask about it, they just don’t care. Things like hypocrisy, lying, “flip-flopping”, going back on promises, and even things like unfair elections and violating the constitution is just Trump and/or Republicans doing what they have to do to make America great, again.
To them, it’s worth it. Obviously, they don’t want their land taken away, but if they have to take other people’s land to get the wall, then that’s just what they have to do. They literally don’t care if someone was treated unfairly for them to get what they want.
They see hypocrisy as a virtue.”

At a time when leaders of investment banks, hedge funds, and major corporate media companies are calling on Democrats to steer to the middle, to tone down the rhetoric, to look to “moderate” white guys for leadership, and when Billionaire Plutocrat CEO is threatening on their behalf to run a spoiler campaign to re-elect President RussianPuppet if they don’t, it really bears remembering that there is no such thing as a moderate Republican.
I don’t just mean among the leadership and office holders. I mean among the voters. There are no moderate Republican voters. Not anymore.
The leadership of the GOP are calling for a criminal investigation of the FBI, the CIA, and the DOJ because those agencies uncovered a foreign spy operation which we now know implicates senior leaders within the Republican Presidential Campaign of 2016. The GOP have been teasing this ever since the former FBI director was fired by the GOP President for refusing to shut down that foreign espionage investigation. The authoritarian extremism that represents has evolved slowly over the last two years. But what has driven it out into the open is the fact that it is now a matter of public record that the Republican Presidential Campaign Manager met with some of those spies during the campaign to pass along election data to help them with their espionage operation. And by all accounts that is merely the tip of a very troubling ice berg.
Moderate voters don’t go along with that kind of shit. Moderate voters certainly don’t support it. Moderate voters don’t fret that if the “other guys” don’t conform to their expectations they will have no choice but to burn the Constitution and our code of laws in an oil drum. That isn’t a moderate position to take. I can’t find a single Republican voter who isn’t at least thinking this shit over right now.
They may have gotten to this point gradually. They may have stumbled into it out of ignorance and fear. They may be emotionally crippled, aging boomers terrified of their growing irrelevancy. None of that should matter. Not at this point. Not with these stakes. There is no justifying this with vague references to judicial nominees or “press one for English”. In the end it’s far to easy to see how really little the judicial branch matters when the stakes are this high.
Right now, today, at this point in time, to be a Republican voter is to abandon democracy and the rule of law. It is to embrace a vision of unitary executive branch power that co-opts the judicial branch and sweeps the legislative branch aside. It is pure authoritarianism. That it is authoritarianism in service to wealth, misogyny, and racism certainly makes it worse. But even a change in the agenda can not fix the basic political evil at the heart of these voters now. They would be just as depraved if they were doing this for the sake of raising the minimum wage or reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@62 “They would be just as depraved if they were doing this for the sake of raising the minimum wage or reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
No, they wouldn’t. Deliberately trying to make Earth uninhabitable (“because if we can’t have it, neither can you”) is way, way more depraved than raising the minimum wage or reducing greenhouse gas emissions by authoritarian means. I’m not arguing the latter is the right way to do it, but there’s a continuum of good and evil not only in means but also ends.
Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
63,
I see regulating greenhouse gas emissions on a political spectrum similar to regulating firearms. It is certainly possible for a voter to have an honest and sincere objection to some forms of regulation under some circumstances. I believe those objections can even be pragmatic and perhaps even justified. For example, certainly one way to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next century would be to reduce the global population by half. I’m not sure there are practical or morally acceptable ways of doing that. However, that is obviously an absurdly extreme position not actually being advocated by anybody.
But owing to the fact that, in their desperation and fear, GOP voters have fallen under the sway of despotism, the objections they mount to these kinds of regulatory efforts amount to eliminationist nihilism, identitarian psuedo-nationalism, and craft-distilled lying designed to debate these kinds of straw-man, absurdly extreme positions. Generally, when voters are given the opportunity to grapple with these issues honestly, free from the extreme rhetoric, they tend to favor increased regulation for the common good.
And that would include Republican voters. What prevents them from doing so, what will always and forever prevent them from doing so, is that they no longer support the basic principles of democratic government. They will not abide being in the minority or having to compromise with any majority that doesn’t look, sound, dress, pray, and feel exactly like themselves.
You allude to this when you mock quote “because if we can’t have it, neither can you”. That sentiment is the principle motivating engine driving GOP political energy today. For most of their lives these are people who felt like “their side” was in charge. And so long as that was the case, so long as their value system was the represented norm in the culture and in government, they they were happy to support democratic government. The 2009 inauguration was a tipping point for these voters. Even if a substantial percentage of them voted for that President, the ultimate truth of it had a searing effect on their consciousness. Where others saw it as an historic victory, they came to see it as an historic loss. They came to see democracy as no long being “with them”. And if they can’t have it, neither can you.
