    According to the indictment, Fredrick and Hough, married doctors, served on the Board of Directors of two Caribbean-based medical schools – one located on Saba, Netherlands Antilles, and one located on Nevis, West Indies. Fredrick had an ownership interest in the medical school on Nevis until 2007, when both medical schools were sold…

    It is further alleged in the indictment that Fredrick and Hough used emails, telephone and in-person meetings to instruct Swiss bankers and asset managers to make investments and transfer funds from their undeclared accounts at UBS. It is alleged that Fredrick and Hough caused funds from the medical schools’ undeclared accounts to be transferred to undeclared accounts in their individual names or in the names of nominee entities. Fredrick and Hough then used the funds in their undeclared accounts to purchase an airplane, two homes in North Carolina and a condominium in Sarasota, Fla. Fredrick also transferred more than $1 million to his relatives…

    Yesterday’s train derailment in Connecticut, 70 people were injured, including the engineers on both trains. I wish them a speedy recovery.

    One thing it underscores, is the stringent safety regulations that the FRA has for locomotives, and that self propelled passenger cars get ensnared in. The M-8 Electric Multiple Unit is a costum design for the MTA METRO-NORTH’s New Haven line, which runs from Grand Central Terminal to New Haven, Connecticut. From GCT to New Rochelle,NY, it runs on a third rail of similar voltage to the NYC subway, then switches to overhead wire collection on the NEC voltage. It and the FRA regs drove the cist up, but so far no fatalities. I know the people who oppose regulations will not acknowledge this, as they oppose passenger rail.

    As for the regulations, I do think they hurt the ability for operators here to use lighter multiple units of European design, but so far it looks like the experiment with a waiver in Texas with the DCTA in a suburban Dallas county, is working. I still would not want the lighter multiple units on most main lines when freight trains are heavy.

    I was asking on a railfan board about the wreck, and confirmed, both trains were made up of M-8s. He also said to early to tell what the cause was, so cannot embrace or refute any theory, but did have one point. With no fatalities so far(not out of the woods yet), it appears the design held up well. These standards are also based on crash energy absorption, among others. It looks like the cabs sustained some of the heaviest damage.

    An old friend, the late E.E. van Ness, was instrumental in saving Seattle’s electric buses many years ago. He had the coolest looking scale model of an old Seattle Transit System electric bus he kept on his fireplace mantle. I recall that it was awarded to him for what he did. Like up North, I see groups arguing over SkyTrain expansion, some want it in Surrey yesterday, another group wants conventional technology, thinking money will stretch farther. Federal MPs that lean right are called Conservatives, conservatives that the Vancouver voters send to Victoria are called BC Liberals, and at the municipal level, its the Non-Partisan Association. Case in point, the NPA’s candidate for mayor in 2011, just got elected to the BC Legislative Assembly, as a BC Liberal.     We’ve got a debt ceiling deadline coming up. Now that the deficit is falling like a stone without a parachute, Republicans are modifying their position on the debt ceiling.

    Instead of trying to force Uncle Sam into default, they want to prioritize payments if isn’t enough money to go around, giving precedence to interest on the debt and Social Security.

    Democrats have already dubbed it, “Pay China first.”

    I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the GOP’s intent, and I also feel sure they didn’t bother to vet this bill with their PR consultants until it was too late. As far as I know they don’t like China, except to sell their cheap goods. What they really had in mind is that Treasuries in private hands tend to be owned mostly by the rich (who own most of everything), and they wanted to make sure the billionaires and hedge funds got paid even if the troops didn’t.

    Unfortunately for the GOPers, China bought a lot of the debt they ran up during the era of profligate GOP borrow-and-spend budget policies, so to pay the rich without paying the Chinese they’ll have to put in a rider making an exception for foreign holders of Treasury debt.

    Uh-oh, but wait, that would screw our European and Israeli friends, and they don’t want to do that, so the rider will have to say,

    “Section 1. Should the government not have enough cash flow to pay all of its outstanding obligations as they come due, payments will be prioritized as follows:

    “Subsection a. The interest on the national debt will be paid first.

    “Subsection (1) to subsection a. An exception to subsection a. is that interest owed to foreigners will be paid last.

    “Subsection (2) to subsection b. Notwithstanding any other language in subsection (1) to subsection a, interest owed to foreigners will be paid first, except those foreigners who have yellow skin, slanted eyes, and are not Japanese or South Koreans.”

    That should mostly cover it. In order to conserve funds, they could put in another rider that says Social Security will be paid first, but only to people with white skin and round eyes who are U.S. citizens and live in Red States; everybody else has to go to the end of the line along with the Chinese.
