    Compared to a bigger project that it is apart of, CalTrain electrification has mostly flown under the radar. It did face NIMBY lawsuits and opposition, but so far, the transition of the Peninsula Commutes from Diesel to Electric, which started Saturday, is going smoothly. If it continues, only Diesel hauled CalTrain operations will be the services to Gilroy, after September 21st.

    This is the second motive power transition for this operation , as in the 50s, it switched from Steam to Diesel. Too bad SP4449 wasn’t able to leave Portland, when built, it hauled the LA-SF Coast Daylight, and although it was used in freight service after the Coast Daylight switched to Diesel, some of the other GS Series 4-8-4s were used on the Commutes. A combination of Oregon Pacific’s bad track, lack of Positive Train Control on SP4449, and that it would have to cross Union Pacific territory are among the reasons for the best ex-Southern Pacific steam locomotive not being there.

    Perhaps this bears some further clarification.

    This is in fact how this is done. You as a U.S. citizen abroad are entitled to the services of your embassies abroad. The routine shit like passport assistance, etc. can be taken care of administratively through local consular offices because it has no implication to administration policy. But for things like trade special assistance contact goes through the embassy. And while it may seem overly formal when you go through the embassy you go through the ambassador (the ambassador’s office), and that’s where you address correspondence.

    If the special assistance you need requires that you write to someone, and you write directly to some deputy assistant undersecretary for trade you will be delayed. They will have to forward your correspondence to the embassy for the attention of the ambassador’s office before taking any action. And they will have to request your permission to do so. Which they will do in writing. And they will not forward your request until they receive your reply. Doing this the way Biden did is the way it’s done, whether you are in a hurry, or merely wish to observe the proper formalities and protocols. And the result in the official record is always the same. A letter is sent to the ambassador.

    Florida has different felon voting rules depending on whether you were convicted in Florida or another state. Even if you’re a Florida resident and registered voter, if your conviction was in another state, Florida will apply that state’s felon voting rules to determine your eligibility to vote.

    In other words, New York law rather than Florida law determines Trump’s eligibility or disqualification to vote in Florida as a convicted felon. And more-liberal New York allows felons to vote if they’re not currently incarcerated.

    That’s why he can vote legally in Florida, even though he wouldn’t be able to do so with a Florida felony conviction, in which case he’d have to complete his sentence and parole, and pay all restitution and fines, before he could vote.
