I think it’s most. But I don’t think it’s all.
Many of the 78-year-old convicted felon’s supporters from the white evangelical community have been both persuaded by Trump’s more focused approach, his fealty to supporting nationwide reproductive healthcare restrictions, and his repetitive messaging on crime and inflation. But many of them also withheld their support in 2020 or switched to Biden because of Trump’s absolutely appalling performance in office, especially his COVID response. Trump has been previously successful at memory-holing his record by attacking President Biden.
But with Biden removed from the picture Trump’s record in office is the most recent and relevant one. And it’s simply awful. And right now Trump’s most immediate record is a big disappointment to some of them. And he probably can’t afford to lose a single one.
Remember that his daughter-in-law disassembled the entire state level ground game back in March when she took over the party. A month later she announced that the new plan would rely on the white evangelical mega church congregations to perform that work for free, and with no prior training in place. If that plan had any hope of success it would have depended on them generating the kind of concentrated enthusiasm we’ve so far only seen among Democrats the last two weeks, and among Trump’s touring mobs of tee shirt and beer koozy sellers who follow him on his tour of drag strips and parking lots.
With less than three months to go the race has very much become another turnout contest. And turnout campaigns require tons of energized and dedicated volunteers keenly interested in producing daily impact. The math is a cruel tyrant. And a 1 point shift among white Boomers is worth a 2 point shift among many other groups. If Trump has to focus on retaining white evangelicals he’s diverting time, attention, and resources from other areas.

Update: One mainland chinese national owner rents out their property, from the first day they took ownership and a white family lives there. We’ve never seen the owners. The renters are ok and at least the property manager keeps the lawn mowed.

His National Guard career wasn’t a free ride. Every overseas assignment took him away from his family. He also was pulled away from his family and day job for disaster response duty, which is typical duty for National Guardsmen. You get to fill sandbags 20 hours a day.
He retired after 24 years of service. No story there. Nothing says you must stay in the National Guard forever. Most guys put in 20 years, then move on. Military duty, like baseball, isn’t a game for forty-somethings.
In fact, Walz almost didn’t make it to 20 years. They wanted to invalid him out of service. He underwent ear surgery in order to stay in. A lot of guys wouldn’t do that.

Everyone is expendable. Duties are standardized, and commanders and sergeants are fungible. A sergeant who leaves is replaced with another sergeant, or someone is promoted and takes over the duties. It’s designed so the names wearing the insignia or stripes don’t matter. Individuality plays no role, and is even discouraged.
In the military, “abandoning your men” has a specific meaning. It refers to leaving troops you’re responsible for behind on the battlefield. This is a strange accusation, considering they’re also criticizing Walz for never having been on a battlefield.

Democrats will still have the more difficult challenge of assembling a complex, diverse, multigenerational coalition. That’s a feature, not a bug. But it will also mean that any changes in course have to be planned out and managed at the leadership level, even if they emerge from the ranks.
