Reason Trump and OAN and Newsmax are so furious about the BIF defections are because of what that may portend for the handing off of the gavel to McCarthy. This is probably the most favorable Senate map Democrats have faced in a decade. And the ranks of “normal” Republican candidates running in those contests continue to thin and whither.
So I’m fairly positive about Democrats retaining control in the Senate for two years of Biden’s reelection campaigning. Which means McCarthy and his slim majority may be better positioned to negotiate for preferred legislation than to block everything. No filibuster in the House and a helluvalot less party discipline. Pelosi got a lot done behind Ryan’s back and behind Trump’s and Cocaine Mitch’s. And Biden will still be in charge. So if Democrats hold the Senate they can head into 2024 running on a very good record of job and economic growth and normalcy.

To retain control of the Senate vulnerable and semi-vulnerable Democrats will have to run to the center for the next 12 months. Imagine, if you will, Hassan’s vote on a $2 trillion waste of money if Manchin does not protect her. Imagine Kelly’s vote. Imagine Cortez Masto’s vote.
There are several Senate Democrats currently able to remain quiet because Manchin is taking the heat for them.

That Republicans score poorly should not surprise at all. The core message of Republicans with respect to kitchen table economic issues is that families and individuals are responsible for themselves and that it is not the job of political parties or the government to address your household balance sheets.
But for Democrats to score almost exactly the same reflects a profound failure of messaging and a failure of focus on the part of everyone. We continue to allow ourselves to be drawn into debates about the imaginary “fears” conjured up by right wing independent expenditure groups. And right now the party is in grave danger of letting billionaire lobby groups strip them of that message for the next three years by blocking President Biden’s BBB.
