Join us tonight for a fun-filled evening of politics under the influence at the Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally. We meet at 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E.
Some of us will be there early to watch coverage of the Florida primary election. The early results show it too close to call between Sen. John McCain and Gov. Willard Mitt Romney. Either way, tonight’s theme song will be War Pigs by Deep Purple.
Perhaps we will make a drinking game out of Mayor 9iu11iani’s concession speech.
Not in Seattle? Check out the Drinking Liberally web site for dates and times of a chapter near you.

It’s McCain by a couple of points over Romney in FL.
35 percent of precincts reporting.
Rudy who?
Richard Pope spews:
It may technically be too close to call, but McCain is ahead 34 to 32, with 37% of precincts reporting. Unless there is some area of the state where Romney is stronger that has reported at a lower rate than the rest of the state, the odds are pretty much in McCain’s favor. And this Florida primary is winner-take-all on delegates on the GOP side of the ledger.
On the Democratic side of the ledger, Clinton is winning 49% to 30% for Obama. Which means Clinton gets roughly half of the 0 delegates at stake, and Obama roughly a third of the 0 delegates.

Hey, I just voted by mail. Stefan probably just shit his drawers. Another Democratic plot, this vote by mail. I voted for Edwards. I believe he stood the best chance of winning a national election against any Republican.
It might sound silly, but he is better looking than Romney and McCain, and that counts. It shouldn’t, but it does. Golda Meir would never have been elected in this country nor would Jim Plunkett. (Google his photo). Looks, unfortunately, count.
My Left Foot spews:
Piper:
McCain is a good man inside. Unfortunately he hitched his wagon to Iraq and backing Bush. This is not going to play at all in the general election. A fatal flaw.
Romney on the other hand is Mormon, and right or wrong, that is his fatal flaw. I won’t lie, that alone disqualifies him for me. We won’t talk about his flip-flopping like a fish on a pier.
Hillary is divisive, but she is smart. Flawed but not fatally.
Obama is short on experience but he is selling hope at a time when this county is looking for just that. Slightly flawed.
Edwards is smart, angry, and has the look of a president as much as anyone and he has the compassion of most Americans regarding his wifes brave and valiant health struggle. No glaring flaws in his makeup, but his campaign has done a poor job getting his message across.
You won’t agree, but I am comfortable with that.

WELL said! I’m still cheering (& donating) for Edwards. Still plenty of time for Clinton or Obama to implode. He’s got the experience of going against Corporations. If we’re ever going to get something done about the National Healthcare debacle, I believe Edward’s the one who could do it.

Re: 10, Edwards is a complete loser, he has proven that in two Presidential Campaigns now. In the first one he did happen to win his home state, finished a distant third this time.
We do know his dad worked in a mill though. If there is anyone in the United States that doesn’t know that John Edwards Dad worked in a mill after two Presidential Campaigns, here is the newsbrake.
John Edwards Dad worked in a mill! Other than that we know he is a one time US Senator that used to be a trial lawyer. He is and environmentalist though, one of the environmentalist that lives in a 30,000 sq. ft. house with his wife and two kids. To all Washington State Progressives who have considered John Edwards:
Please stick with John Edwards and caucus for him on February 9 because
1) He could still win it.
2) Even if he doesn’t win, he could still play a vital role at the Democratic Convention to move the major candidate to more progressive positions. And he could persuade the majors to take him on as their running mate.
John Edwards has a proven record of checking and balancing corporate power, wrongdoing and negligence. Corporate greed is at the root of everything that’s wrong with this country.
John Edwards has the most progressive plan for America. Read all about it:

Bill Clinton did not pardon Mel Reynolds for having sex with a 16 year old girl. Reynolds served a 30 month state prison sentence for that crime. And Clinton couldn’t have done anything about that state conviction even if he had wanted to.
Instead, Clinton commuted a five year federal prison sentence that Reynolds received on some fraud-related charges. There is a substantial difference between what you are claiming, and what really happened.

There are many ways to look at the Florida numbers. For example, Mitt Romney got more votes than Barack Obama. Both Rudy 9ui11iani and Mike *uckabee got more votes than John Edwards. There were 200,000 more people voting in the GOP primary than the Democratic primary, even though Democratic registration in Florida is 300,000 more than the Republicans.
On the other hand, it was pretty darned good for nearly as many Democrats to turn out as Republicans, when the Republican primary actually determined delegates to the national convention (and all the candidates campaigned heavily), while the Democratic primary supposedly determined nothing (due to Florida being stripped of its delegates) and none of the candidates officially campaigned in Florida at all.
Roger Rabbit spews:
We had a system sorta like that in Vietnam. If you fucked up and got one of your buddies killed by your negligence or stupidity, you got shot in the back on the next patrol. Worked great. No lawyer fees, no court costs, and the whole thing got settled within 48 hours.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@46 I think we have pretty good visibility now of who the GOP candidate will be, and it’s no surprise the Warmonger Party is going to nominate the guy who’s itching to start a war with Iran.
Romney is still in the race only because of his ability and willingness to spend tens of millions of dollars of his own money.
The most recent Quinnipiac polls show tossups in New York and New Jersey. But a recent Florida showed a tossup in that state, too — and, as we know, those numbers didn’t hold up. And there’s more — the candidate who tied with McCain in NY and NJ was not Romney but Giuliani, who is now out of the race and throwing his support to McCain.
I think McCain clinches the GOP nomination next Tuesday.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@41 (continued) A & O (administration & overhead) in the private health insurance system is 50 times what it is in the Medicare system.
Roger Rabbit spews:
42, 49 – The solution to our health care crisis is obvious – adopt the Medicare model nationwide. The 24% of health care dollars currently wasted on feeding private insurance companies that add no value and deliver no health care could be used to cover the 17% of Americans who are uninsured and still have enough money left over to cut everyone’s premiums.
Conversely, the amount of money spent because of malpractice claims is so small a percentage of overall health care costs that enacting so-called “tort reform” would have no effect on premiums.
Additionally, Republicans have never put forth a persuasive rationale for shifting the financial losses caused by medical negligence from negligent hospitals and doctors to the innocent victims of their mistakes.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Finally, giving legal immunity to doctors and hospitals would remove the incentive to be careful and result in an increase in the number of patients killed and injured by sloppy medical practice.

I find it significant that McCain campaigned in the parts of Florida that are heavily laden with military families and retirees, and avoided talking about the economy in his stump speeches.
That’s all well and good for Florida’s GOP primary, but those demographics will not be replicated country-wide in the general election. Standing between him and the White House are vast numbers of voters who want out of Iraq, who don’t want to attack Iran, and who are deeply worried about the economy. McCain’s message to Florida’s Republican military voters won’t play well with that crowd.
My guess is First Gentleman Bill Clinton will be picking out the silverware and tea seat patterns for the White House come next January.

You know Roger, you’re right. We don’t actually need to limit negligence, damage, or liability awards at all. How about instead we limit the legal profession. You know, something like you can’t charge more than say $40 or $50 dollars an hour for legal services…and no more fat percentages of those outrageous jury awards. That’d probably get rid of most of the shysters – say 90% all lawyers, and make sure the ones that remain, are there because they’re really interested in JUSTICE, not in enriching themselves.
Of course we could also do what I’d prefer and copy the Chinese when it came/comes to enemies of the people – bullet to the back of the neck and charge their family for the cost of the round. *

On the Edwards Withdrawal
The exit of John Edwards will hit many DLers hard.
This is a tough year for him. His clarity and agenda might well have won out in any other year.
There is however a good side. If we do not demonize anyone, look at the four left in the race. These are all remarkable people .. remarkable especially because none of them in any way resenbles the bumbling bozo named bush.
Look here:
Hillary … Undoubtably the most war scarred and tested American politician since Nixon. She is, all other issues aside, clearly bright, clearly committd to service, and clearly will form Day 1 move on a rational agenda.
Barack (my guy) … How do you describe the culmination of a dream. BHO is the first American to transcend race, he is obviously bright and like Hillary has a cadre of advisers who will serves the Republic well should BHO be the Prez. Best of all, in an internet world, BHO alone of these candidates has the potential to emerge as a popular world figure ,, able through the internet to influence populations in Iran and China in way that may have a huge effect on the world.
John McCain War hero, hard ass, author of an impressive set of rational legislation. Friend of the first Americans. To be very honest if JM ends up as President, he will only be able to govern as a non partisan. The nut right will still be there, ruling at least half of his party. IF McC couls pull it off, he more than BHO may stand a chance of beibng a truely trans party candidate.
Mitt Romney impressive, practical business man. Leving aside the amazing lax morals that allow him to pander so shamelessly, Romneey would likley govern from the rational center, unlike McCain the Mittster probably can govern as a Republican.
All good so far, what next?
McCain is the likely Rep Prex. His chjoice of veep is critical. McC is an od man who has been ill. He is on the outs with hios party. I have wondered about two choices .. Whitman vs Huckabee. Huckabee would be a announcement that JM is trying to rebuild the Reagan alliance so willing that he is choosiong to relinquish the claim to sanity and reality in his government.
Hillary is the fav on the Dem side. It si here to loose. At one time that looked unlikely but Bill Clinton revealed a side of HRC that opens many questions BHO can exploit. The hispanic ploy is esp. worrisome. The reps used this community very badly, exploiting the cubans esp. I hope HRC does not do the same.
Lets assume she does win. The worry here is that the Clintons seem to really want to govern from their shared bedroom. There can not be a co-prexy. Also, they, the Clintons have a weak record when it comes to staff. WJC’s cabinet had two bright stars .. the Bill and the Rubin.
Piper Scott spews:
@64…RP…
So, you think it was OK for Mel Reynolds to abuse his position of power and authority to prey upon a child for his own sexual gratification? Can we get that on the record so that when next you run for public office, your official position on this issue of concern to parents and people interested in the welfare of children will be crystal clear for the voters?
Who cares about anyone in my family tree? Somewhere in the dark past, we all have someone who was hung for horse stealing.
I know I also have Civil War vets who wore blue and gray, including Pvt. Albert C. Roberts who fought with the 20th Maine at Little Round Top under Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. And there’s this guy who was scalped by Indians somewhere near Rye, NY back around 1675, but I’d have to dig for details.
What’s your point? The only behaviors for which I am responsible, legally, morally, or otherwise, are my own.
