I just looked at CC for the first time in several months. It is sad to see.
They seemingly do not understand web design at all. The major feature is a sort of blog that covers everything from potholes to poetry. Because it scrolls, even an interesting aricle quickly fades.
The emphasis on the arts is a mixed blessing. I like the arts and am happy to see good coverage. But as stew with politics, the result in the the veggies and meat get unequally cooked.
Finally, the overall feel is gentile. Too gentile.
In a way, this reminds me of a somewhat intellectual version of Seattle Magazine .. their motto is, “Never Offend the Rich Folks.”

Of course the real reason we were admonished in the 50s to change our clothes, and make special occasions every night for dinner, was to sell more and more commodities and consumer goods. “See them there the little piggies living piggy lives, clutching forks and knives” (well that being the flatware used for everyday use rather than the plated silver for Sundays and the real silver for those really special days). Then again, maybe this was the:
One reason that men abuse their wives is because women rebel against their husband’s God-given authority, a Southern Baptist scholar said Sunday in a Texas church.
Bruce Ware, professor of Christian theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., said women desire to have their own way instead of submitting to their husbands because of sin.
“And husbands on their parts, because they’re sinners, now respond to that threat to their authority either by being abusive, which is of course one of the ways men can respond when their authority is challenged–or, more commonly, to become passive, acquiescent, and simply not asserting the leadership they ought to as men in their homes and in churches,” Ware said from the pulpit of Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas
Coming up on Crosscut: a searing expose on the advantages (and tradeoffs) of using these newfangled word processors over good old fashioned typewriters:
Microsoft Word is fast (and I hear it can even check your spelling!), but there is danger in allowing just anyone print their work like a pro, regardless of their journalistic credentials.

26
Puddybudspews:
Diddly NAMBLA Love:
What does education have to do with anything? I see it didn’t help John Effin Kerry. Oh that’s right he got lower marks than GWB. I see it didn’t help Clark who was summarily “FIRED” from his NATO position later.
Randy Black says: “Retired General Hugh Shelton was asked the same question after giving a talk at a college in California. Shelton, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was Clark’s boss in 1999 when Clark was unceremoniously told that he was being removed from his position as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. “I’ve known Wes for a long time,” Shelton said. “I will tell you the reason he came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart. . . .” http://www.newyorker.com/fact/.....117fa_fact
Another view: General Wesley Clark was fired by Secretary of Defense William Cohen shortly after the war ended and, just to make sure Clark didn’t try to make an end-run, the chiefs leaked the firing to the Washington Post. The reasons for his dismissal seem clear: Clark had pushed a policy that Cohen and the chiefs had opposed (and, even after the war, continued to oppose); he went around them in his advocacy; he was too close, for the chiefs’ taste, to Clinton (in signing Clark’s release papers, Clinton was led to believe the move was a normal succession, not a dismissal); and, toward the end of the war, he pushed for a ground-invasion option that none of the Pentagon’s top officials supported in the slightest. http://slate.msn.com/id/2091194/
But then the coup de grace, a PuddyFact placed here long ago: Newsweek magazine’s Howard Fineman reports that in January, 2003, Wesley Clark told associates that, “I would have been a Republican if Karl Rove had returned my phone calls.”
Butt Diddly NAMBLA Love there is more, much more about Wesley Clark –
1. On May 11, 2001, speaking to the Pulaski County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner in Little Rock, Arkansas, the words of Wesley Clark:
“And I’m very glad we’ve got the great team in office, men like Colin Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice… people I know very well — our president George W. Bush. We need them there.”
2. Words of Wesley Clark about President Reagan: “We were really helped when President Ronald Reagan came in. I remember non-commissioned officers who were going to retire and they re-enlisted because they believed in President Reagan. That’s the kind of President Ronald Reagan was. He helped our country win the Cold War. He put it behind us in a way no one ever believed would be possible. He was truly a great American leader. And those of us in the Armed Forces loved him, respected him, and tremendously admired him for his great leadership.”
3. Words of Wesley Clark about President George HW Bush: “President George Bush had the courage and the vision… and we will always be grateful to President George Bush for that tremendous leadership and statesmanship.”
4. Words of Wesley Clark about American military involvement overseas: “Do you ever ask why it is that these people in these other countries can’t solve their own problems without the United States sending its troops over there? And do you ever ask why it is the Europeans, the people that make the Mercedes and the BMW’s that got so much money can’t put some of that money in their own defense programs and they need us to do their defense for them?”
“And I’ll tell you what I’ve learned from Europe is that are a lot of people out in the world who really, really love and admire the United States. Don’t you ever believe it when you hear foreign leaders making nasty comments about us. That’s them playing to their domestic politics as they misread it. Because when you talk to the people out there, they love us. They love our values. They love what we stand for in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.” http://www.opinioncenter.com/clark/
So Diddly NAMBLA Love, if you did your homework like Puddy does, you would have stumbled over these “facts”.
