At the time of her retirement she was bone-on-bone in her right lateral condyl with clearly defined significant osteophytes (bone spurs that grow around bone injury that produce inflamation and weaken ligament attachment), which meant that she was in constant pain every single waking moment of every day whether skiing, walking, or even sitting in an airplane for eight or nine hours. Her recovery was so succesful and so rapid that she began challenging her doctors within months to consider if her replacement components and where they join to her natural bone could withstand the physical rigors of world cup level ski competition. The honest answer is they do not know.

Which is exactly what I said. Her replacement surgery in April of 2024 was in the other leg (her right).
Her injury resulted from her line into the gate, an aggressive line required by the pitch that follows immediately after that turn. If the racer is too low on the reverse bank they lose considerable time in the pitch immediately following that gate. And it is time which is unable to be made up in an event where speeds exceed 80 mph and the finishing times are separated by only 100ths of a second. Vonn took the most aggressive line possible, which put her to the inside of the other racer’s tracks, closer to the gate, but on snow that was not as well slipped during pre-race inspection.
Her momentary loss of control on that rough patch of surface in a position that placed her closer to the gate than any other racer at that point is what caused her to strike the panel. Her ACL had nothing to do with it.
One of the reasons Vonn has suffered quite a few injuries, other than an exceptionally long career in a very dangerous sport, is because she is well known for being aggressive as hell and taking many more risks than most of her fellow competitors (she was wake boarding and performing aerial stunts eight weeks after her repacement surgery). Vonn took the most aggresive line available in the most critical part of that course (the first four turns). It was the line best calculated to produce a time that would edge out the other racers and earn her the gold she sought. She did not come out of retirement in pursuit of a bronze. But it was also the line that put her at greatest risk. That is very typical of Vonn and in fact most other successful World Cut downhill racers over the last three or four decades. Downhill is not at all the same as slalom and GS. Perfection is not the objective. Maximum speed is. From that follows great risk.

If she had lost control heading into that right turn she would have been further from the gate on her right, not too close to it.
Her left leg was downhill and therefore controlling heading into that right turn gate. You have no idea whether or not her ACL was contributory. One good reason her right arm may have been out far enough to catch in the gate is her left leg failed her during the turn. I have no idea whether her left ACL injury was contributory but I can see how it may have been. We all can see how it may have been.

Well, for one, the distinct possibility that if ICE shows up in your neighborhood, you may get your car windows busted out, get pepper sprayed in the face and dragged from your vehicle, then thrown into a filthy detention cell and held there for days without communication with the outside world simply because they assumed your driver’s license showing you’re a citizen is fake.
