  13. I watched a Rachel Maddow video last night about the Iranians using a bunker-buster to attack a hardened aircraft hangar containing a bunch of F-35s. Maddow reported something like 30 or 40 Israeli F-35s were destroyed or severely damaged.

    The Iranians apparently haven’t been neglecting offensive military capabilities over the past few decades. I suspect the Israelis will turn to one of their hundreds of nukes to USA against Israel. Once that happens, things will be entirely different!

    Now this is a very dated term of warfare that is not reflected in modern laws of warfare or treaties. Nevertheless it has a specific meaning. And that meaning is that enemy combatants will not be granted the legal right of surrender, but will instead be killed in battle, or if they attempt to surrender, they will be executed.

    Needless to say this is a war crime. And even declaring this policy is itself a war crime. But moreover, and one good reason the United States has signed many treaties recognizing this as a war crime and pledging our intention never to adopt this policy, is because adopting this policy in war time puts your own military service members at terrible risk themselves of being executed by enemy captors.

    I just thought it would be useful to offer this reminder right about now as we continue to read about US service members being shot down in combat over Iran while the US Secretary of Defense is actively committing recognized international war crimes.

    Passive infrared detection does not emit radar signals. Passive infrared uses EO/IR detect and tracking that enables completely passive cuing for the SAM to engage (which can actually be a radar guided SAM, it’s just the first RWR warning you get is the engagement radar painting you as the missile comes off the rail). That significantly reduces response time available to pilots engaged by these systems.

    As a result, it is much less likely to be detected or jammed by American electronic warfare systems. That leaves our aircraft vulnerable. It’s not something terribly new. It’s been known that Iran possesses these systems since early in the Syrian civil war.

    Pretending that such systems do not exist, or pretending that the US Air Force is unaware of them is deeply dishonest. In the current conflict US Air Force pilots, crews, and aircraft are being tasked with missions by the alcoholic Secretary of Defense that are known to expose them to this risk, which is obviously a very credible one. This is not particularly sophisticated tech. It’s just a very sophisticated combination of ordinary tech that dramatically raises the stakes for air supremacy doctrine air forces like ours.

    It’s pretty unusual for a close air support aircraft like the A-10 to get an air-to-air kill.
