U.S. Energy Concerns Not Spiking in War’s Early Stages
Thirty-five percent of U.S. adults worry a great deal about the availability and affordability of energy, the same as in 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During the initial weeks of the U.S. war with Iran, Americans appear to be taking higher energy costs in stride. About one in three U.S. adults interviewed March 2-18 say they worry “a great deal” about the availability and affordability of energy, unchanged from a year ago. Relatively few mention high gas prices as the most important problem facing the nation. And 43% of U.S. adults, lower than Gallup has seen at other times of high gas prices, expect the U.S. to face a critical energy shortage in the next five years.
    …
Thirty-five percent of U.S. adults say they worry “a great deal” about the availability and affordability of energy, unchanged from last year and similar to the 2024 reading of 37%. In 2022, during the last major spike in gas prices, 47% said they worried a great deal.

The Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin was just offshore the port of Matanzas, Cuba, early this morning, carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of oil. The delivery offers a critical measure of relief for the island nation, which has struggled to function under crippling, sometimes dayslong electricity blackouts since January, when the Trump administration told the rest of the world to stop providing Cuba with oil.

President Trump eased up on that stance over the weekend. “We don’t mind having somebody get a boatload, because they need — they have to survive,” Trump said on Sunday night. “I told them, if a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem with that. Whether it’s Russia or not.”

85 bikes seized, riders cited during Bay Bridge take over attempt, CHP says

The California Highway Patrol said its officers were alerted by the San Francisco Police Department that a large group of bicyclists was riding through the streets recklessly and were believed to be heading to the Bay Bridge, with the intent of taking over the bridge.

The San Francisco Police Department said its real-time investigations center conducted surveillance on the group, providing updates on their whereabouts. The riders were seen riding directly at moving vehicles, swerving in and out of traffic and coming dangerously close to pedestrians on city streets, CHP said.
    …
The group entered the bridge by riding the wrong way up the Harrison Street off-ramp, where they were met by officers from the CHP and police department, the CHP said.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) – A mom in Wisconsin allegedly told investigators she killed her daughter to protect her from Elon Musk, according to authorities.

    …
Oninski told dispatchers she “murdered [her daughter] to protect her from somebody else, period,” and later explained she was protecting her daughter from Elon Musk.

She requested an ambulance and a hearse. When dispatch asked if she wanted an ambulance for her daughter, Oniknski allegedly responded, “she’s dead, honey. She needs a hearse.”

well when it’s convenient for them.

This is all I could find about Kagan’s “attack”:

JUSTICE JACKSON’s dissenting opinion claims that this is a small, or even nonexistent, category. See post, at 21–22, n. 8. But even her own opinion, when listing laws supposedly put at risk today, offers quite a few examples. See post, at 32–33, and n. 13. Her view to the contrary rests on reimagining—and in that way collapsing—the well-settled distinction between viewpoint-based and other content-based speech restrictions. See, e.g., Vidal v. Elster, 602 U. S. 286, 292–293 (2024) (explaining the difference).

KBJ made a states rights argument..

Arguing that the Tenth Amendment trumps the First Amendment is usually a nonstarter, YLB.

Kagan called out KBJ for claiming no difference between viewpoint-neutral speech and viewpoint-based speech. Instead of just reading the footnote you should read the asterisk-containing section in the text of the concurrence that leads to that footnote. Here, let me help you out:

The same may well be true of content-based but viewpoint-neutral laws regulating speech in doctors’ and counselors’ offices.[2]* Medical care typically involves speech, so the regulation of medical care (which is, of course, pervasive) may involve speech restrictions. And those restrictions will generally refer to the speech’s content. Cf. Reed, 576 U. S., at 177 (Breyer, J., concurring in judgment) (noting that “[r]egulatory programs” addressing speech “inevitably involve content discrimination”). But laws of that kind may not pose the risk of censorship—of “official suppression of ideas”—that appropriately triggers our most rigorous review. R. A. V., 505 U. S., at 390. And that means the “difference between viewpoint-based and viewpoint-neutral content discrimination” in the health-care context could prove “decisive.” Vidal, 602 U. S., at 330 (opinion of Sotomayor, J.). Fuller consideration of that question, though, can wait for another day. We need not here decide how to assess viewpoint-neutral laws regulating health providers’ expression because, as the Court holds, Colorado’s is not one.

Republicans aren’t “originalists” all the time, it seems, only when it suits them:

In court filings, Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the justices to imagine a century-old statute guaranteeing “equal protection of the laws.” Lawmakers who passed it would’ve intended it to allow for separate-but-equal facilities. But courts today wouldn’t read it that way, Sauer noted. They’d interpret it to forbid segregation.

Sauer says the same logic should apply to the 1940 citizenship law. “Because that statute echoes the Citizenship Clause’s language, it is best understood to codify the Clause’s objective meaning, not a late-arising misunderstanding of the Clause,” Sauer wrote in court filings.

    https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/5808113-trump-birthright-citizenship-supreme-court/

Now for a lesson in statutory interpretation. Courts interpret statutes according to legislative intent. Thus, if Congress enacts a law in 1940 containing language identical to a constitutional amendment Congress approved in 1866, but the 1940 Congress’s interpretation of the language is different, courts must go with the intent of the 1940 Congress, not the 1966 Congress, because they’re interpreting the statute, not the amendment. Courts can, of course, conclude that the 1940 Congress’s intent was identical to the 1866 Congress’s intent, but are not required to do so, and this should be a matter of objective analysis. Got that, armchair lawyers? All the Supreme Court justices know this, of course, so let’s just hope no more than four of them are partisan hacks who set aside proper legal analysis in favor of the bigotry of a political faction.

Sheryl Davis, once San Francisco’s most powerful civil rights watchdog, continued her spectacular fall on Monday when she was booked on suspicion of a raft of felony financial misconduct and ethics-related charges, the Chronicle has learned.

Oh, look! More people cashing in on George Floyd’s overdose death:

Prosecutors said Davis used public funds for personal benefit, while a city audit flagged spending on a 30-night luxury hotel stay, hundreds of sports tickets and lavishly catered events.

Dream Keeper was described as a $120 million investment in San Francisco’s Black communities following Floyd’s death, with officials initially seeking to redirect funding away from law enforcement.

Prosecutors alleged Davis remained connected to the nonprofit’s finances even after taking her city role, including serving as a signatory on its bank account and helping steer how the money was spent.

Jackie Fielder, a member of DSA and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for District 9, said the woman who was shouting anti-Jewish language is “mentally unstable” and “known to construction workers in the area.” She said the confined setting made it difficult to distinguish her from other protesters. The woman has not been publicly identified.

Secondly, nothing in your second link says Fielder’s health issue is psychological in nature, but Wikipedia noted that “A statement from her office said she was ‘navigating a mental health condition.'” That doesn’t mean she’s “psycho.”

However, countless of your HA posts strongly indicate you’re psycho.

    It’s immaterial.

Yes, President Trump was found to have raped a woman by a jury in a court of law.

As soon as someone is brave enough to explain to President Angry Grandpa that he will be forced to sit quietly for 90 minutes while other people talk in tomorrow’s SCOTUS oral, he will cancel his appearance.

But I get your point in that you not so much bothered by the executions, you’re just trying to rub in a victory. But it’s a bit premature, just like everything you do is. You best hope you don’t have to eat your own ass.

A sobering reality of what Americans should be looking forward to after Republicans lose control of Congress next year is that Trump will go wild with his veto pen.

And without two-thirds majorities to override his vetos, new legislation restoring healthcare funding, restoring cuts to Medicare, reforming DHS, the DOJ, and the DOD will not be possible. Trump will use his cult control over remaining MAGA Republicans in Congress to attempt to block everything. And the MAGA zombies will produce more shitdowns than ever before.

It’s important for Democrats to talk about what they can do for Americans after the MAGA majorities are swept out of office, including what they can do for Americans after Trump is gone forever. But it’s also important for Democrats to be realistic, mindful of the legislative leverage granted to a Congressional minority in league with an insane dictator. And the messaging defining that looming allegiance needs to begin now.

Trump is an insane cult leader. Everything about him, his weird family, his disfunctional cabinet of cronies and grifters, and his meat puppets in Congress plays directly into that narrative. The weird cabinet praise sessions. Gold statues. Putting his name on the money. His rants to his cult. His grotesque ballroom. His naked lust for violence and power. His mandatory prayer sessions. The giant shoes to signal obedience. It all tracks and plays directly into defining his lame duck final two years as an insane cult mass suicide hoping to drag America into oblivion.
