    So to summarize: Iran played its biggest card and the main result is that the United States became the world’s emergency gas station and China’s cheap energy subsidy evaporated.

    Blockading a nation’s ports is also an attack on its civilian population.

    Since the Islamic revolutionary government in Iran has been faced with both massive sanctions and periodic unprovoked attacks for most of its history, it has tended to develop independent means for many critical supplies and economic inputs. But clearly a prolonged total blockade of the country would naturally result in some very real civilian malnutrition, starvation, illness, and death.

    Since the current conflict was initiated without warning by the United States and Israel, and since Iran has been more careful and discriminating in its counter-attacks than either the US or Israel have been in their bombings of civilian targets like apartment blocks and girl’s schools, it’s likely that global and regional reaction to escalation by Iran might not be particularly condemnatory to something like a radiological missile strike on Tel Aviv, or Dubai. And such a response by Iran might be triggered by a total blockade.
