    Been watching Laura Poitras’ documentary about Sy Hersh. Over a half hour into it and it’s been all about Hersh’s first big story: My Lai. Totally mindblowing.

    Money quotes:

    Hersh is 88 years old. Sharp as a tack and still reporting. We so need more like him. A whole freaking army division of him.

    There’s a shot of his wife early in the movie with their first child. Very pretty lady and you wonder with Hersh travelling so often and not paid very well how they held it together. He married her in ’64 and they’re still married.

    Hersh is asked. What would the story be without the photos? Hersh says there’d be no story.

    Which is freaking amazing because Hersh had early access to the Taguba report from a lawyer representing one of the abusers. Remember General Taguba who wrote up an internal summary of the shit that went down in Abu Ghraib?

    He is interviewed. He is asked what is the difference between “abuse” and “torture”?

    He said in short “abuse” is like slapping a prisoner or withholding his food.

    “Torture” is leaving permanent bodily harm like kicking a prisoner chained to the ground while a broom handle is shoved into their rectum. Yeah Taguba gave that exact example.

    This source had just transmitted photographs of IDF Gaza war plans to Hersh. Evidence that the IDF knew they were going to attack populated areas.

    The source said this documentation is already leading to prosecutions either in Israel or internationally and the IDF is freaking out.

    Approximately 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam. Most were drivers, cooks, mechanics, supply sergeants, combat engineers (i.e., construction personnel), air crew, artillery gunners, medical personnel, administrative staff and so on, who spent most of their time on U.S. bases and had little or no contact with Vietnamese civilians, and neither the opportunity nor motivation to mistreat them.

    The infantry, roughly 10% of all personnel, were assigned to walk around in the jungle, and up and down hills, trying to get shot at. Their job was to locate the enemy by drawing fire, then engage and destroy enemy units. The kill ratio in firefights was roughly 1:1 — one of theirs for one of ours. (Most VC and NVA were killed by bombs, artillery rounds, and other standoff fires.)

    Many of the frontline infantry troops were draftees and black solders. They had a rotten job, but they would do it, with unbelievable guts and fortitude. If you had to walk through the fires of Hell, they are the people you would want with you. They were the best of my generation, and deserve our respect.

    Westmoreland was an idiot, and his attrition strategy failed miserably. Making body count the measure of success (and criteria for officer promotion) invited cheating: Needless to say, the body counts were inflated, and civilian dead were counted as “VC.”

    That wasn’t the only big mistake. His “search and destroy” tactics were fucked from the start. This allowed the enemy to choose the time and place of battle, which always gave the enemy the advantages of numbers and terrain, and they usually could disengage the moment they lost the advantage.

    The Pentagon’s individual replacement system was devastating to morale. The WW2 troops enlisted, trained, fought, and came home together. In many cases, they served with other guys they’d grown up with. They were in for the duration, and their job was to win the war.

    In Vietnam, the draftees were those who couldn’t afford college, and they were sent individually over for a 12 or 13 month tour of duty (for officers it was 6 months), assigned to units where they didn’t know anybody, and nobody gave a fuck about winning the war and everybody counted the days until they went home, with the sole objective of not getting killed or injured between Day 1 and Day 365. This resulted in an army that was completely unmotivated to carry out dangerous orders or defeat the enemy.

    It was all foreseeable. McNamara, Westmoreland, and others at the top were blind to the obvious: That attrition wouldn’t work, that “search and destroy” gave the tactical advantages to the enemy, that U.S. morale would collapse in the field and one the homefront, and that the war would fail. And it played out exactly that way.

  52. The bottom line: The G.I.s were sheep to be sacrificed. Their officers were only interested in their own promotions. Returning veterans were vilified by the antiwar crowd for fighting the war, and blamed by the “Greatest Generation” that sent them to Vietnam and furnished the incompetent civilian and military leaders for losing the war. Vietnam veterans had the worst of all worlds. They asked for none of it. They deserve our respect.

    My Lai wasn’t the only atrocity that happened THAT DAY. There was another atrocity just next door.

    There were worse things than just plain mass execution revealed in the documentary.

    Hersh wondered why? Why this descent into madness?

    Hersh says:

    “It’s appalling. Why the hell didn’t this get out? [Hersh started digging into this from one tip.] Here is the killing of 4 or 5 hundred people, witnessed by perhaps a dozen helicopters who were assigned that day for combat support. The major general in charge of the Americal Division was in the air that day. The Colonel in charge of the Brigade was there. The head of the task force was there. Within a few days, 3 or 4 hundred men, GIs knew about it and yet nobody said anything. Nobody reported it.

    There’s only two things I think to conclude from this. One is, of course, that it was such a shockingly untoward event that nobody could even begin to discuss it.

    The other one, I think, the more logical conclusion, is, ‘Well, that’s just another day in Vietnam.’

    Why did it take Sy Hersh to write a story for the Army to do a formal investigation? Interview the soldiers, take down what they witnessed and draw numbered circles in blue sharpie on aerial photographs where they saw bodies, civilians pleading for their lives, etc. It was weird to see a circle with a number and a note, “that’s where we had lunch”

    Maybe this was rare but massacres was one sure method of increasing “body count” for the higher ups.

    14 officers were charged in the cover up. One of the charges was “failure to report”.

    Hersh said he kept talking to soldiers, one right after another and for him, it just kept getting worse and worse and worse.

    The documentary is called “Cover-up”. Highly recommended.

Easy access to federal student aid reduced pressure on universities to control spending. Growing demands from regional and specialized accreditors also add to administrative roles. The shift to online education and new tech needs required new administrative support structures. Competition for students leads to spending on lavish campus amenities, funded partly by administrative expansion.
    The republicans answer to increased demand, increased federal paperwork, catering to the rich, is restrict high education to only rich Christian white straight American men who don’t have to compete.

Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, who played an instrumental role in stopping the killing (he threatened to shoot American troops), reported it that day, but his report was ignored or whitewashed by higher-ups. A discharged soldier, Ron Ridenour, wrote letters to President Nixon, several State Department and Pentagon officials, and two dozen members of Congress. Hersh learned of the Pentagon investigation and made it public.

    At a minimum, soldiers don’t get medals for reporting war crimes. (Thompson wasn’t honored until many years later.) You have to understand that for a soldier in the field who witnessed something, but didn’t participate in it, to report it — which amounts to accusing his buddies of murder — was inviting a bullet in the back the next time the unit took fire while in the field on an operation. Even if you saw something you thought was wrong, there was tremendous pressure to not rat on your buddies. And common soldiers have no investigatory authority; that’s an officer-level responsibility.

    The crucial failures were by the colonels and generals who failed to properly supervise their troops, and then swept the reports under the rug or participated in the cover-up. We had generally lousy officers in Vietnam; most of them were punching their tickets for promotion, and wouldn’t say or do anything that might jeopardize their careers (and career advancement). To a great extent it was a systemic failure, because the system’s incentives were all geared toward racking up body counts.

    All this said, there was a culture of disdain for Vietnamese lives that extended to civilians. I know; I was there, and saw it myself. That wasn’t my attitude, nor the attitude of everyone I served with, but I would say about a third to half of the fellows in my unit didn’t give a fuck about the Vietnamese. None of these guys were draftees; I was in an all-volunteer unit, most of them from southern states.

SeattleJew, who was a professor in the School of Medicine and involved himself in faculty and university affairs, complained that over 500 of them are lawyers whose role (as he saw it) was ass-covering for the administration.

    He complained all the time about bloated college administrations, and he wasn’t alone; there have been stories and statistics on it. Those bloated administrations are there to serve the institution’s and top administrators’ self-interests, not serve the students. And as state support for public universities wanes, the cost of these bloated staffs is charged to students as higher tuition and adds to their student debt.
