Drinking Liberally

by Goldy — Tuesday, 6/13/06, 3:15 pm

The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Come join us for some good beer and even better conversation.

If you happen to be a liberal drinker on the other side of the mountains, the Tri-Cities chapter of DL also meets Tuesday nights, 7 PM, Atomic Ale, 1015 Lee Blvd., in Richland. Go ask Jimmy for more details.

Meanwhile the Tacoma chapter of DL meets tomorrow night (and every Wednesday,) 8 PM at Meconi’s Pub, 709 Pacific Ave. They’ll be launching their “Guest Drinker” series with Rep. Dawn Morrell (D-Puyallup).

Just get Montlake to start serving hard pear cider from now on.

Add this to your topics for discussion tonight.

I received an e-mail from the Dept. of Transportation. It said in part:

    “Hear and Be Heard
at public open houses to be held this month:

    Roads, Bridges & Mobility
    Building our Transportation Future

You Have Choices: Put Yourself in the Driver’s Seat
Learn about the recently completed Tolling Study that examines ways to better use our existing road capacity and to fund sorely needed infrastructure to keep our state moving forward.

    Take Control of the Wheel
Come speak with the Transportation Commissioners and see how today’s advances in tolling technology are effectively improving mobility.

See how other states are getting a grip on congestion by optimizing their roadway capacity through tolling.

Watch a 3-D animation of how electronic toll collection will work on Washington’s newest toll projects.

Hear the latest on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and Good to Go!, the modern, easy-to-use e-sticker for your car so you can pay tolls without stopping.

    Determine Your Destination
Then tell us what you think. We’ll use your comments to let the Washington State Legislature know how transportation issues affect our lifestyle and our economy.”

Sounds to me like the issue is already decided. This isn’t a “be heard” meeting as much as a “be told” meeting, an excuse to trot out a dog-and-pony show put on by the contractors who want the state to pay for an electronic tolling system.

I don’t like tolls on public highways, because they are the first step towards a segregated transportation system. The wealthy get favored treatment, the rest of us get stuck in the traffic, watching them whiz by. The wealthy will oppose future attempts to improve the entire system becuase it doesn’t affect them, so they don’t want to help pay for it. The toll lanes will get better, the rest of the system will decline.

It is interesting that the only meeting schedule for the Seattle area will be held in Mercer Island!

Also interesting today is an article that says Russians are getting fed up with the wealthy and influential being able to use the center lanes, and being largely immune to traffic laws.

Too much info to post all of it here. I put most of it here.

RHP… uh… that’s how it works pal. The wealthy get to live better because they make the world a better place. That’s how they got wealthy; by producing something that people want and are willing to pay for. Why the fuck should I be forced to sit in traffic while shit like you impede my progress? My time is worth more than yours. Sit there and stew in the mess you made of your life. I’ve got things to do…

    divorce lawyer.

Prison inmates, a supposed victim who used a New Orleans cemetery for a home address, and a person who spent 70 days at a Hawaiian hotel all were able to wrongly get taxpayer help, according to evidence that gives a new black eye to the nation’s
disaster relief agency. [………………………………………….So GBS was visiting Hawaii for a couple months!!! Spending other people’s money is sooooooo much better than spending your own!!!]

AND NOW FOR A WORD FROM A BIGOT

From today’s Seattle Times letters to the editor:

“Regarding the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, it is now one down and 1,299,999,999 to go! Just how much does one of those 500-pound bombs cost? — Will Stoddard, Sequim”

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.c.....ets13.html

Hmmm … let’s see … what does Mr. Stoddard of Sequim have in mind? According to Wikipedia, “There are approximately 1.2-1.3 billion Muslims worldwide.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim

Yup, that’s it — kill ’em all … men, women, and children … guilty or innocent. At least this wingfuck, unlike our resident trollfucks, does some research and got the number of the world’s Muslims right. (It took me 5 seconds to find it on Wikipedia, but that’s more work than any of HA’s trollfucks, who habitually muck up even elementary facts, are willing to invest in intellectual activity.)

Betcha Mr. Will Fucking Bigot Stoddard of Sequim voted for Rossi, too. He sounds like the type who would.

Another letter in today’s Seattle Times (same link as above), by Dan Allison of Lake Forest Park, is worth quoting from:

“Regarding ‘Online persona can ruin your shot at that job’ [page one, June 11], it’s appalling that employers would be snooping around a prospective employee’s personal life using Google or the social-networking Web sites such as Facebook, MySpace, etc.

“Frankly, it’s none of their business what someone does in their personal life …. If a company determines through online searches that a prospective employee’s politics are at odds with those of the company or the boss, what’s to stop the hiring manager from throwing that person’s résumé in the trash? …

“Finally, one word of advice for people who put their persona online and who might be concerned about the misuse of this information: Don’t use your real name ….”

Any questions, trolls? Hey, if John Craig Herman of Hawaii doesn’t care if we know he’s the idiot posting as “JCH” (note use of real initials), that’s his business. As for “Roger Rabbit,” that’s a FAKE name, in case you wingidiots didn’t realize it.

The 8th Congressional District needs a congress(wo)man who can get things done without burning half the world’s oil reserves to do them! It’s time for a change.

  14. Roger Rabbit spews:

    Tuesday, 6/13/06 at 8:07 pm

Do the math: A 747 burns 5 gallons of jet fuel per mile (according to Boeing), and it’s 5,600 miles roundtrip from D.C. to Seattle, and there’s 42 gallons in a barrel, so that’s 667 barrels of kerosene.

Also in today’s Seattle Times, columnist Leonard Pitt, writing about Ann Coulter, offers us this memorable portrait of the people who worship the Virgin Bitch:

“Frankly, it’s easy to do what Coulter does. Just say the most outrageous thing in the most inflammatory way. Just give moral and mental cover to that small-minded, anti-intellectual strain of the electorate that recoils like Superman in the face of Kryptonite from complexity and incertitude. And when people call you on it, just wrap yourself in the flag and declare yourself a straight-shootin’ conservative under siege by that mean ol’ liberal media. … Ann Coulter is not reviled because she is conservative. … No, Coulter is reviled because she is mean, malicious, the barbed-wire frontwoman for a cabal of bloviators, bully boys and blowhards …. But again, it plays in Peoria. And why not? It is loud, simple, stupid.”

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.c.....tts13.html

Small minded. Anti-intellectual. Recoils from complexity and incertitude. Wrap themselves in the flag and bawl about being abused by the mean liberal media. A cabal of bloviators, bully boys, and blowhards. Loud, simple, stupid.

Think the military is rock-solid behind Bush? Read this article. http://www.washingtonmonthly.c.....wells.html

    Excerpts:

“‘I’m a strong Republican, but the Republicans have been the problem; we’ve been treated like second-class citizens,’ a retired Vietnam Marine helicopter gunnery sergeant named Don Beaver told me in North Carolina.

“Elsie P. Smith, the town’s Republican mayor, says: ‘There’s a few people who have become very hostile [towards the Bush administration] … the longer the war goes on, the more of that subtle shift you’re going to see.’

“This subtle distancing of Republicans from Bush has begun to show up, locally and nationally, even among those conservative politicians who spent this administration’s first two years hugging the president as if their political future depended solely on the strength of their grip. …

“A similar mood is emerging in small, patriotic towns around the country. According to a study conducted in mid-October by Stars and Stripes, half of American soldiers in-country say their units have low morale, that they were insufficiently trained, and that they won’t reenlist. …

“Charles Carter, a retired Naval chief petty officer, told Knight Ridder: ‘I will vote non-Republican in a heartbeat if it continues as is.’ Carter’s opinion is representative. While the GOP hasn’t lost the military vote, if present trends continue, it could see substantial defections in one of its core constituencies. …

“A reassignment of less than two-hundredths of 1 percent in the military vote to the Democrats from the Republicans in Florida in 2000 would have moved that state to the Democratic column, and a similar shift of less than 5 percent in the veteran vote alone would have given Arkansas, Nevada, and New Hampshire’s electoral votes to Gore ….”

Worthwhile government projects that can be funded by the City of Seattle property tax increase:

    1. Tunnel to replace Alaskan Way Viaduct — i.e. the $2 to 3 billion or more of additional funding that is needed to finish the project beyond what the state allocated

    2. Extend Sound Transit light rail from downtown Seattle-ish to Northgate (all of this is within the City of Seattle) — $1 billion or more

    3. Build a state-of-the-art monorail system all throughout the City of Seattle ($2 billion for the original project, but fund it for $4 billion so a more extensive system can be built)

So, I’m late to respond to Mark the Redneck. That’s because after making my post, I left to go to a business dinner, where we finalized the details of over a billion dollars in sales between an Asian company and a local manufacturer. So that’s why MTR’s message, which I just saw this morning, is even more hillarious:

“The wealthy get to live better because they make the world a better place.”

Some do, most don’t. Most are just lucky, but they don’t want to admit it. They cover themselves by claiming that they are smarter, work harder, etc., but fail to recognize that there are lots more people who are smarter than them and work harder than them who aren’t quite so lucky. Obviously, MTR is in this catagory. As for me, I do fine, thank you, and I give more than 10% of my earnings to charity every month, and devote at least 10% in time – including serving at a local meals program for the homeless. What did you this week to make the world a better place?

“That’s how they got wealthy; by producing something that people want and are willing to pay for.”

Again, some do, other’s don’t. Bill Gates and Microsoft did very well, but the actual “producers” of their programs didn’t do so well. I think the DOS designer got $10,000 for his work on the program, which Bill gates then flipped to IBM (keeping the rights to re-sell for himself). And the Xerox designers of the Mac/Windows interface (co-opted by Apple, then Microsoft) just got their regular salaries. The college professor who designed the computer spreadsheet never received a penny off his invention, although Lotus, Apple, and then Microsoft have made a bundle off it. I don’t have anything against Bill Gates, but it’s an example of how you cannot claim that only the rich are the “producers”.

“Why the fuck should I be forced to sit in traffic while shit like you impede my progress? My time is worth more than yours. Sit there and stew in the mess you made of your life. I’ve got things to do…”

Gee, I made a ton of money for my employer yesterday, and even more for the local economy over the next five years. Maybe shit like you should pull over and wait for me to pass?????

I could pay for tolls if I wanted too, and I bet my employer would pay for them if I asked. But I won’t, because I don’t think its a good idea to allow a favored few to get special benefits on the public highways, only because they have more money. Raise the money and fix the whole problem, don’t just fix it for a few. I’m willing to pay my fair share.

So, could you please explain to me, how Paris Hilton makes the world a better place? And what, other than a sex tape, has she produced? (No, I don’t count TV shows which show how dumb, lazy, spoiled, and self-centered she is “producing” anything of value. I pay all my bills on time and have a credit rating that makes the Republican-run U.S. government look like a trailer park deadbeat. Come to think of it … the GOP-run government IS a trailer park deadbeat! Check out today’s inflation numbers.

We’re running about 6% to 7% inflation, according to the official government numbers. They try to make it look better by ignoring energy and food costs. So, okay, inflation is a little better if you don’t drive or eat. Even the higher figure is as phony as a three-dollar bill. Gas prices are up nearly 70% since January. In Seattle, housing prices are going up about 6% or 7% a month. We are well on the way toward a 2001 dollar (when Bush took office) being worth a dime. This is devastating to senior citizens living on fixed pensions and minimum wage workers.

I see in today’s news that Congress is getting a $3,300 COLA. That amounts to about 1/3 of the annual earnings of workers earning the federal minimum wage of $5.15 an hour. They haven’t received an increase since the early 1990s, and last year the CHEAP LABOR CONSERVATIVES in Congress refused to raise the minimum wage by even one fucking penny. SHAME on those cheap bastards. I don’t need to tell you who they are — Republicans.

That’s one of roughly a million reasons why voters need to throw these greedy, grasping, Republican millionaires out of Congress and replace them with decent, compassionate Democratic millionaires.

Wingnuts have taken to bragging about the jobs now being created by the “Bush economy.” Let’s put this in perspective. The economy suffered an absolute loss of 2.2 million jobs in Bush’s first three years, disregarding the increase in the workforce over that period. Although the economy has been adding jobs since early 2005, it needs 156,000 new jobs a month to accomodate workforce growth, in other words that’s what is needed to keep the unemployment rate from rising, and job growth is falling well short of that number in most months. So, the “Bush economy” is still growing unemployment instead of growing prosperity.

But wait. Bush’s deficit spending has, predictably and inevitably, created raging inflation that is pushing down real wages, especially at the minimum wage level.

The $5.15 federal minimum wage is now worth, in purchasing power, maybe half (or less) of what it was when enacted. In other words, we now have a $2.50 minimum wage. Needless to say, lowering the minimum wage creates more low-end jobs. Theoretically, the number of jobs the economy creates at a $0.00 wage rate is infinite. But those $2.50 jobs aren’t creating prosperity, they’re creating poverty. They’re also creating higher deficits, because at that wage level, the government instead of employers is providing these workers’ food (food stamps), medical care (Medicaid), and housing (public housing, Section 8, and housing subsidies).

But wait! There’s more! Bush’s immigration policies (i.e., opening the floodgates to an influx of cheap foreign labor) is pushing wages even lower. Poor blacks are now complaining they can no longer compete for day labor jobs against immigrants (many of them illegals) who will work for far less than the legal minimum wage. Have you noticed who is building all those ultra-expensive new homes and condos going up all over Seattle? About 90% of the laborers on those construction sites are non-white, non-English speaking, and lord knows what the contractors are paying them but I’ll bet they aren’t making $15 an hour or even $8 an hour or even necessarily our state’s legal minimum wage. Of course this is taking jobs and income away from American construction workers who used to make a middle class living.

This kind of job creation isn’t prosperity, it’s downsizing the standard of living of the average American, at the same time it’s downsizing the job market itself. There are fewer jobs for Americans, at lower pay, with less benefits, and no job security. This sucks! Why in hell would ANYONE except the filthy rich (and morally filthy) capitalists whose personal fortunes are growing exponentially VOTE for the assholes responsible for the policies that produce this economic result? When are the trailer park idiots shooting themselves in their feet going to wake up and realize they’re cutting their own throats by voting Republican? (Don’t answer that; these damn fools are unteachable, and the answer is “never.”)

Speaking of morally filthy capitalists, another news item today is that pension funds are now suing corporations en masse for backdating executive stock options. It works like this. Let’s say a company’s stock price is $20 when John Doe comes on board, so his captive board gives him a million options. In theory, if the stock goes up to $30 under his leadership, he makes $10 million. But wait! The cheating motherfucking backdates his options to when the stock price was $10! He turns out to be a crappy CEO and the stock goes down to $15. John Doe gets fired, but walks away with $5 million even before the friendly board starts stuffing the shareholders’ money into his golden parachute. This is stealing, folks. STEALING. And it’s happening on a massive scale.

The pension funds are pissed. They’ve filed lawsuits against at least 40 companies, and there’s likely to be hundreds more. The lawyers are going to clean up. This scandal is going to generate billions, if not tens of billions, in legal fees. I think maybe I should go job hunting.

And many of those jobs are in Iraq. Let’s see, a dogface Army PFC makes, what, $17,000 a year? He’s on duty 24-7. So he’s making about $1 an hour to get shot at. The ultimate cheap labor.

    Janet S Said:

“Didn’t Jimmy Carter make his fortune farming peanuts? And isn’t peanut farming a highly regulated enterprise done only with the permission of the govt? That means that it is a govt controlled monopoly. Only an idiot wouldn’t make money, because the game is rigged in the first place”

No, you are thinking of Senator George Prescott Bush and (ex) President George H. W. Bush. Prescott Bush made his fortune using east-coast money to buy up oil (mineral) rights in Texas during the Depression when even oil prices hit bottom and everyone was broke. Later, as part of the anti-depression programs of the Roosevelt administration, the price of gasoline was artificially set higher than the market price by the federal government in order to fight against “deflation”. The policy encouraged exploration and production in the short run, but had bad long-term consequences we are feeling even today, and it remained in place far too long (into the 1970’s).

But more importantly, the oil subsidy served as a cover where future President George H. W. Bush could “manage” his father’s firm, run it for a few years in an industry where you would have to be a complete dufus to lose money, and then take credit as being a “businessman” when he ran for office.

They tried to do it again with George W. Bush – use his father’s money and political backing to set him up in the oil business. But the oil business in the 1970’s and 1980’s wasn’t the same as it was in the 1940’s and 1950’s. With prices fluctuating, you had to be bright and actually be a pretty good businessman to avoid going broke. George W. Bush was neither. He managed two oil rights companies which were going downhill fast, but each time he was saved when he was bought out by a cabal of investors (at far above a fair market price for the troubled company). The investors were not buying the companies so much as they were hoping to buy favor with the father, who by then was a big shot in the Republican party and running for President.

After being bought out of the oil business the last time, Bush was put forward as the front man for the consortium buying the Texas Rangers. When that baseball team was sold, he did make a fair amount of money. What is questionable is where he got the money for his initial investments in the first place. The money he made off the oil industry was clearly insufficient to buy a fraction of his interest in the team, so it appears that the other investors gave him an unequal share of the team so he would appear to be the “majority owner”.

From that, he used his resume as a “Texas Businessman”, and his father’s political connections, to win the governer’s race in Texas, and after that he became President.

Now, are calling Carter’s reliance on agriculture programs which every farmer is entitled to rely upon, and which is the only thing currently keeping family farms in existence? If so, then perhaps you should advertise in Eastern Washington that the Republicans intend to eliminate those benefits? Yea, I didn’t think so. Instead, the Republicans will quietly make the benefits available only to large agribusinesses, while reducing benefits to the family farm until they don’t exist anymore. They just won’t admit that’s what they are doing, except when they don’t think their comments will be repeated.

112: It is true that the immigrants are taking the labor positions, and this is having the effect of competing with other minorities for the same positions. It has happened over and over again – first when the Irish arrived in the U.S., then when the Italians arrived, then the eastern Eurpeans, then the Asians, and now the Latinos. Unfortunately for the blacks (excuse me – African-Americans), it seems that they are the ones that keep getting pushed out. I’d be pissed too. But for them the best answer is to continue to push for upward mobility. When you are at the bottom rung of the ladder, there is nowhere to go but to be pushed off the ladder completely.

In my younger days I have held quite a variety of jobs (some at the same time): lifeguard, swim instructor, construction & landscape laborer, short-order cook, bartender, waiter, retail clerk, mainframe computer operator, and courier, all before getting my undergraduate degree. I always felt that if push came to shove, and the economy tanked, I could always support my family (on a subsistance level) using one of those occupations.

But a couple of years ago, my teenage son attempted to get his first summer job on his own (he didn’t want me to help). After many discouraging forays in job searches, I told him that perhaps he was setting his sights to high, perhaps he should just get a job at the local MacDonald’s for the summer – anything so he could get that “first job” on his resume. “But Dad”, he said, “I’ve tried. They told me I had to be fluent in Spanish so I could communicate with the other workers there”. That’s when I started to pay attention, and realized how few entry-level jobs are NOT being staffed by rather recent immigrants. It’s good for them, but I worry about the effect it has on our teenagers, when traditional summer or part-time entry level jobs are no longer available to them. (Yes, my son did eventually find a good job working in a bookstore, and he did it on his own, but it took a lot longer than we expected).

Before anyone claims I am racist, I should point out that my wife’s step-mother is Hispanic (from California, not Mexico, she proudly points out that her family was in California “before the Anglos were here”). My wife’s mother was Scottish/Samoan, and her father was Polish. All of her cousins are mixed-race in some form or another, including a few of us anglos, a good representation of blacks, and also hispanics, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Vietnamese, and a few others in the mix. I would be in bad shape if I was prejudiced.

But the family reunions are a blast – the whole family has great cooks, and when everybody brings food, its the best buffet on the planet. I also get a kick out of the people who think I’m lying to them when they ask what kind of group it is, and I tell them its a family reunion.

I have always been a staunch Republican. I have even managed to ignore the obvious betrayals of the Neocons to the conservative Republican values of fiscal responsibility and restraint in international affairs.

But this lady in the “Dates for Democrats” blogads is making me feel kind of funny. There she is with her basketball, ponytail, winning smile and pert …. Nothing at all like the frumpish bagladies in the Republican party.

Well, I am thinking that perhaps I cannot forgive the neocons anymore!

I am voting Democratic this year!

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with that lovely lass?
