The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. I’ll be in particular need of a couple of drinks and some friendly conversation after the final school closure recommendations come out this afternoon, and the only changes will likely be to keep a couple North End schools open.
I’m told that 43rd Legislative District candidate Lynne Dodson will joining us tonight to slake her thirst after a round of doorbelling. Chances are I’ll probably talk her ear off about school closures too.

Why are they keeping North End schools open, when so few parents in the North End send their children to public schools?
They need to get rid of this entire bussing nonsense, divide Seattle into attendance zones like every other school district in the state, and send children to their local neighborhood school.
This would probably save Graham Hill, and shut down a number of schools in the North End. Or maybe even North End schools could reopen, if parents didn’t have their children bussed over half of creation.
This would also cut transportation costs by at least $5 million, and allow that money to be used to actually improve children’s education.

By your logic, floods caused by poorly constructed dams are out of our control, too. After all, what human force can hold back all that water, once the dam gaves way? It’s an impossibility. Probably both. The difference is that natural cycles occur over geologic time, giving human and animal populations ample time to adapt, whereas the human impact on the climate seems to be occurring within a few decades.

First of all, there is no such thing as “liberal arrogance.” The fact we’re right and you’re wrong about nearly everything doesn’t make us arrogant, it’s simply a reflection of the reality that educated people who rely on scientific method and, by the way, are habitually tentative about their conclusions are statistically more likely to reach correct conclusions than ignorant uneducated fucks who shun knowledge and base their belief system on a dartboard. We do need, however, to arrest mankind’s spewing of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere as quickly as possible. If we don’t, there will be various consequences for humanity, none of them good.

As for temperature changes, scientists who have worked on reconstructing temperature records for the last 1,000 years agree on two salient points:
1. The 20th century was the warmest century of the last 10 centuries; and
2. The rate of warming is accelerating, with the 0.6 degree (+ or 1 0.2) Centigrade increase of the last 100 years expected to increase another 1.4 to 5.8 degrees C. over the next 100 years.
