The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E.

I’ll be there tonight, looking forward to an icey cold Manny’s and another hot podcast. We may even have an interesting special guest. No promises, but we’ll see.

  19. Bush’s “favorable” rating is now 34. There are a few Presidents Since WWII who have experienced lower ratings. Their fate is interesting: Truman, suffering from the Korean War stalemate was at 22 in Feb. 1952 (Eisenhower was elected in November of that year). Nixon was at 24 in Aug. 1974 shortly before he resigned due to the Watergate cover-up. Jimmy Carter was at 28 in June 1979, after a rescession, record oil prices, the worst winter in a long time, and during the Iranian Revolution (he was not re-elected the following year). George H.W. Bush (Bush I) was at 29 in July 1992, a rescession year, and he was not re-elected.

    None with approval ratings lower than Bush were re-elected, or if they did not run again their party lost in the next election. Good news for Democrates, except that they need to offer a tangible platform to bring back the working middle-class from the suburbs and farms. I don’t think the Democrats can get away with running “anybody” against “Bush”, who will not actually be there. Be prepared for lots more Republican candidates to be distancing themselves from Bush.

    108, Libertarian, I never attended flight school. Hence, I never “washed out”. All a figment of GBS’s vivid “imagination”. All my training was done in Newport, RI and Coronado, Ca, as well as the old Philadelphia Ship Yard. Then, three WESTPACs of 6 monthe each , one ten month IO cruise, and a tour in Coronado at the NAB. Four years at sea, and two ashore.

  52. GBS – I don’t recall the Navy flying the F-106. I knew a few of those guys who flew them. The F-106 was strictly an Air Force interceptor, flown initially by the “Gentlemen’s Flying Club” at Air Defense Command. They got rolled into Tactical Air Command at some point. So, if JCH says something about the Navy flying F106’s, he’s wrong.

But, my understanding is that any fighter aircraft deployed by the navy must meet carrier qualifications. i.e. beefed up landing gear, tail hook, and specialized air intakes that work being catapulted off the deck.

    I’ll bet Kim Jong-il (DA WO) could verify that the navy uses F-106’s since he was a wing nut in the navy. On the other hand, he’ll probably say anything to ASS LICK his superior, JCH.

    If you read my post at 20, you will see that you are the person JCH was responding to when he lied about going to flight school and that it was all my “vivid imagination” about him WASHING-OUT.

    JCH realized that if he told you he went to flight school tha you, being a pilot in the air force, would have quickly exposed him. So, JCH opted to put the “blame” on me by saying it was all my “vivid imagination.” He was banking on the fact that I wouldn’t read his lie because earlier on that particular thread I said I was leaving for the weekend.

    He thought he was safe.

    He was hoping and praying he could squeeze his lie through and convince everyone that I was the one, in fact, who was lying. However, I didn’t leave because I was reading some other comments, then I saw his post on the thread.

    As I’ve confessed before, I’m not the smartest person on this thread and I’m certainly no expert on aviation, but I do have a good memory, especially for the details. I started thinking about where that conversation was taking place regarding JCH and flying. It led me to the thread in the archives where JCH had posted his comments about flight school. Once I saw him contradicting himself, I exposed his lies.

    And, that’s how the enlisted man, with no college education, trapped the “officer” with a degree from Penn State and an MBA, lying.

    And, noooooowwwww, you know the rest of the story.

  62. GBS – Yes, you are correct: carrier-based aircraft have beefed-up landing gear and other structural modifications to adapt those aircraft to the rigors of carrier landings. The F-4, the workhorse air-to-air and air-to-ground McDonald-Douglas fighter of the Vietnam excursion, was developed jointly by the Navy and AF, so even some of the AF versions had tail hooks that were an odd accessory for the AF boys. But this tailhook did actually save a guy’s but once: the leader in a flight of two F-4s got hit pretty bad, and it looked like he and his Wisso (Weapons System Officer) might have to eject over enemy territory.

    The wingman, hoping to help his flight lead avoid time at the Hanoi Hilton, told the leader to drop his tail hook. (Now, remember this is an Air Force plane with NO obvious use for the tailhook.) The formation leader dropped his tail hook, and the wingman maneuvered behind the flight lead. The wingman evenutally made contact with the extended tail hook, pressing the fuselage of the his aircraft against the tail hook. The wingman then “pushed” the distressed F-4 to over open water of the Gulf of Tonkin. The flight leader and Wisso ejected and were rescued by the Navy.

    Motto of the story: co-operation in the military is a very good thing, and you are correct in your comments about Navy aircraft vs. the Air Force models.
