Airplanes are getting stuck in lots of traffic jams this summer, but Amtrak is on a roll.
Ridership on the passenger rail system is up 6% so far this year, the biggest jump since the late 1970s. On the Acela Express, trains that run at higher speeds between Washington, New York and Boston, the number of riders has surged 20% over the past 10 months. That’s enough new passengers to fill 2,000 Boeing 757 jets.

We need more Commandments
Ten isn’t enough. First off, half the Ten Commandments are non-competition clauses. Keep the Sabbath, Worship me, Don’t worship other gods, no Idolatry. These are just rules against shopping at the competition’s store. Not ethical precepts. The two coveting commandments are so nebulous as to be unenforceable. Adultery, well it definitely has a downside, but the scarlet letter is sort of passé, especially when we never applied the rule to men. leaving us with no killing, thievery, or lying, at least as far as witnessing goes. These rules cropped up in every civilization created by man. From Inca to Mandarin. Zulu to Roman. These cultures developed this set of basic rules without the benefit of Judeo Christian inspiration mostly because as social animals we need them to survive and thrive. The earliest clans, twenty thousand years ago, must have developed these rules for their own survival. No magical invisible dictator in the sky is needed to impose these rules.

Speaking of 34 years ago…back around that time I was working for the Cardiology Dept at the UW and one of the things being studied was the significantly higher incidence of high blood pressure in Blacks, compared to the general population. Seems that at that time there was presumed a genetic predisposition involved, but methinks the traditional African-American diet has always seemed to be a little long on fat and salt–not that that isn’t common to what we consider “southern” cooking in general. Now that we’ve been subjected to three more decades of the fast food industry’s efforts to “super-size” all of us, I wonder if we white folks might have caught up.

Bummed I missed the show. I was always under the impression that the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah were against the poor and not sexual as commonly thought. I hope this was discussed.
