I’ll be having a happy but way too sober St. Patty’s Day celebration tonight on “The David Goldstein Show”, 7PM to 10PM on Newsradio 710-KIRO:
7PM: Will WA’s 2004 contested election bring down US AG Alberto Gonzales?
Attorney Jenny Durkan was a key member of the legal team that successfully defended the legitimacy of our 2004 gubernatorial election, and she’ll be joining me at the top of the hour to discuss the growing scandal surrounding the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, why it matters, and how this scandal and the 2004 election dispute might all be linked. Was the Bush administration subverting our justice system for partisan political purposes? Call in and let me know what you think.
8PM: Is the state Democratic Party undemocratic?
A bill was introduced in the state legislature this week to cancel our April presidential primary and have the parties choose all their delegates through caucuses. Does this shut most people out of the primary system, or encourage voters to get involved and participate? Is a crowded room of neighbors arguing and debating less democratic than a TV advertising fueled beauty pageant?
9PM: TBA
Plus, occasional live reports from my half-Irish daughter Katie on her family’s annual St. Patty’s Day bash down in Olympia.
Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).
Roger Rabbit spews:
The parties prefer caucuses because party activists feel they, and not the general public, should choose their party’s nominee. The problem is, party activists generally want a more ideological candidate than the people who vote in the November election do. Choosing candidates via popular primary brings the parties back to earth, and actually helps the parties by nominating candidates more acceptable to the general electorate and therefore more likely to win.
Roger Rabbit spews:
The foregoing analysis applies only to Democrats, of course. All Republicans are extremists, and Republicans always run extremist candidates.

Karl Rove Must Go To Prison
“Once again, I just can’t abide by these Johnny-come-way-too-latelys who now realize George W. Bush is challenged by My Pet Goat and “The Google,” Dick Cheney’s an evil right-wing assclown and Karl Rove is, to quote a not so bright man, “a grotesquely corpulent, politically sociopathic parasite who destroys all government he touches.”
Kelly Wright spews:
Goldy. We talked about this at Drinking Lib last week. I am on the state committee and I have been campaigning for the Primary. Let me know if you want me to contribute to the program tonight.
Fatalistic Frank the Fox spews:
rr @ 1. Wrong. Party activists feel that way because they are the ones doing most of the heavy lifting to advance the party’s goals. Choosing candidates via popular primary can be just as fickle and wrong, and turns the nomination process into a high school beauty pagent with money. Abe Lincoln, the last real republican, would never have made it under the rank money favoritism of our broken primary system.
You may disagree, but I ask you to name all these allegedly “ideological” candidates who benefit from the caucus system. Didn’t think so.
In summary, it’s all part and parcel of that old political question. Do parties lead, or are they lead?

This is what I mean by MODERATES as ENABLERS.
“The House and Senate have the authority to end the war in Iraq quickly, efficiently and honorably. Claims to the contrary by George W. Bush and his apologists are at odds with every intention of the authors of the Constitution. Which part of “Congress shall have the power to declare war… to make rules for the government and regulation of the land and naval forces…to make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers” does the White House fail to understand? Unfortunately, it may be the same part that cautious Congressional leaders have trouble comprehending.”

2) Traitor Murtha
3) “No Rocket Scientist” Murray

I heard Komrade Sheehan screeching today about an “illegal war”.
Maybe one of you fucking idiot moonbats can explain what the fuck she means by “illegal”. Ditn Congress authorize war? And if they think that was a mistake, then why do they fuck around with “non binding resolutions”?

Roger Rabbit spews:
@5 I understand all that, but let’s face it, the overwhelming majority of voters don’t have the time, energy, and/or inclination for party activism, and if you give those voters a say in choosing the party’s nominee they are more likely to support you in November. But even more important, you are more likely to get a candidate who more closely reflects the general electorate, and therefore is more likely to be elected.
You asked for examples. I’ll give you one. Dennis Kucinich had much more support among party activists than among voters. I’m not saying he would have got the nomination through a caucus process. I will say that, completely apart from whether I like him or not, he was (and is) unelectable.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@5 (continued) “Do parties lead, or are they lead?”
Both. They need to be on top of issues, and get ahead of the curve, and sometimes lead their supporters; but they must also be responsive not only to party adherents but to the general electorate — if they wish to win elections. That means they have to listen to voters’ concerns and come up with solutions to problems that voters are thinking about.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@7 That’s nothing. Gas prices tripled after the fascist takeover of gummint, and Bush’s decision to let oil industry CEOs run energy policy.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@8 When did Rep. Murtha become a senator, you fucking dolt? I missed that.

Anyway, her name is Stefani, and she used to be a guard dog owned by one Mr. S. Sharansky, who lives up the street from my burrow here in Green Lake Park. I have no idea why anyone would get such a friendly, affectionate dog as Stefani to guard a garden, or anything else. All she did was lick me, and follow me home. I sure hope Mr. S. Sharansky gets a smaller dog the next time, because Stefani is eating me out of house and home! This thing is the size of a small horse. Stefani sure is friendly, though.

Anyone who doesnt prosecute an election that allows uncounted ballots to be counted in the 2nd recount should be fired. The 2004 governors election is a joke, there is no two way about it.
headless lucy spews:
re 21: They were legally cast ballots. Why not count them?
Because without vote suppression, Republicans can’t win. The biggest lie the media has foisted upon the American public is that Conservatives are flush with “new ideas”. The definition of conservatism is that it shuns new ideas.
Republicans stand for lies, theft, and murder — as long as they are the ones doing it.
YOS LIB BRO spews:
that allows uncounted ballots to be counted in the 2nd recount
SORRY DOOFUS THE REPUBLICAN U.S. ATTORNEY INVESTIGATED AND SAW NO EVIDENCE OF FRAUD. MCKENNA (WHO YOU VOTED FOR) SAID YOUR CHIMPANZEE IN THE WHITE HOUSE MADE A MISTAKE.
IT’S YOU WHO’S THE JOKE. JUST LOOK AT YOUR LOSING STREAK.
Roger Rabbit spews:
21, 22 The recounts did not change any votes from one candidate to another. What they did was count legal ballots that were missed by the Optiscan machines. This is not necessarily due to voters improperly filling in the ovals on the ballots, as smudges, stains, or just wear from handling can cause the machines to reject a ballot. How would you like you vote not being counted because of a mechanical defect? All Washington laws and procedures were followed in the recount. Our citizens are entitled to have their votes counted, and that’s what recounts are for.
Personally, I don’t like the idea of having a machine be an intermediary between me and having my vote counted. I think we should mark ballot ballots with an “[X]” in the box and hand count them. There is no need for the media to know who won at 8:15 pm. on election night. We should keep the voting process simple and foolproof, and take the time necessary to count the ballots correctly, and count them all. If it was done right the first time, there wouldn’t be any recount controversies.
But the 2004 election, in the end, boils down to a bunch of whiney sore losers acting like children.

And he’s earned the right to talk tough, too. Not just because of his own student deferments, but also by the student deferments of Rush Limbaugh (who wrote the foreword) and the “other priorities” of Sean Hannity (who wrote the preface) and the book’s co-author, Stephen Mansfield.

24 BULLSHIT!!!!
King County Elections office asked Superintendent of Elections Bill Huennekens to explain the 336 Mystery Ballots. Apparently there was a batch of 160 or so absentee ballots that “simply didn’t show up the first time around”. He had no other explanation, other than observing that these things always happen and out of 900,000 ballots [898,238 to be exact] the error rate is very low and proportional to other counties. I pressed him on the 33 newly discovered “Polling” ballots. Shouldn’t these have been reconciled with the precinct poll counts? Every voter who shows up at a poll signs in and can be counted. Wouldn’t the number of ballots be reconciled against the number of voters at each precinct? They were reconciled during the first count, he explained. Nevertheless, 147 brand new Polling ballots appeared and 114 previously counted Polling ballots disappeared, as if by magic, for a net change of 33 brand new ballots. Likewise, the net new 198 absentee ballots came from 813 newly discovered absentees, less 698 previously existing and reconciled absentees that somehow vanished.
The election was fraud, of course whenever you have libs involved something is going to come up as fraudulent.
Dan Rather spews:
Every voter who shows up at a poll signs in and can be counted. Wouldn’t the number of ballots be reconciled against the number of voters at each precinct? They were reconciled during the first count, he explained.
Of course they were. They had no place else to go to make up the difference so they had to cheat. What do you expect.
Dan Rather spews:
Likewise, the net new 198 absentee ballots came from 813 newly discovered absentees, less 698 previously existing and reconciled absentees that somehow vanished.
Wowsers. I wonder who benefited from the new 813 newly discovered absentee ballots.. Hmmmmmmmmmm. hehehehehee
You dems actually think people believe you. heheehehe
Dan Rather spews:
The whole arguement that you dems make about the court case legitimizing the election is a farce. The court did not have the power to go back and throw these “newly found” ballots out. The election was bungle and purposely manipulated by democrats in KC. The queen is a fraud.
John Barelli spews:
Gee, Dan. I wonder why your hand-picked judge didn’t see all that. You make it sound so obvious.
Then there’s also your Republican AG, your Republican Secretary of State and even your Republican US Attorney.
None of those folks could see what you show as being so clear and obvious. It must be that we somehow managed to sneak a bunch of Democrats into your party, get you to nominate them and then get you to elect them.
Or, could it possibly be that you are just one more anonymous wingnut with a tinfoil hat and conspiracy theories?
Remember, the shiny side out on that tinfoil hat, Dan.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Bleating Wingnut @28: Here we go again with the wingnut bullshit that any less-than-perfect election is fraudulent. You haven’t ever worked as a pollworker, have you? Do you really think 4,000 part-time King County pollworkers, who receive a grand total of 4 hours of training, collectively make zero errors in handling the poll books and ballots? I say again: Bullshit! Mistakes do not equal fraud.
The truth is, if King County hadn’t made mistakes, Gregoire would have won the first count and the first recount as well as the second recount. The fact hundreds of King County ballots weren’t counted at first helped Rossi “win” the first two counts.
Here’s another fact you can shove up your ass, Dufus. Every single one of the ballots you refer to was sent to the King County Canvassing Board, but Gregoire had already won the manual recount before the KCCB took any action. That makes those ballots irrelevant.
Dan Rather spews:
The problem with Bush is that he tries to reach out to much across the political isle and let liberals have to much power. Love thy enemy. I can understand that. I know a lot of liberal people and I only wish the best for them. I just dont want them in power. He shouldn’t either.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Bleating Wingnut @29: Here we go again with the wingnut bullshit about ballot reconciliation. This issue has been rehashed so many times on this board that Dufus must think we all suffer from amnesia and can’t remember the previous debunkings. Executive summary: King County was not set up in 2004 to conduct reconciliations; reconciliations were not required by the state laws and regulations in effect at that time, and therefore counties did not invest scarce resources in accumulating the data needed to conduct them. This is a total red herring.
John Barelli spews:
Uh, Dan?
Time to check that tinfoil hat one more time. The space aliens have done something obscene to whatever brain tissue you had left.
Shiny side out, Dan. Shiny side out.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Bleating Wingnut @30: If those ballots had been counted the first time around, as they should have been, Rossi would have lost all three counts. Give it up, Dufus. Your guy did NOT win the election. Gregoire got more votes, so she wins. That’s the way it is. See you for the rematch in ’08.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@31 “The court did not have the power to go back and throw these ‘newly found’ ballots out.”
Like hell it didn’t! Once again, you display your ignorance of the law. Judge Bridges had power to award the election to Rossi. That’s why the WSRP spent $2.5 million to contest it. Do you think they invested that sum in a fucking moot court exercise?
Dan Rather spews:
It was not a mistake. It was fraud. Geeeeshh… Come on. You shouldn’t be able to bring in uncounted ballots after the fact regardless after the first count has been finalized. The fact that there were is “prima facie” evidence of fraud.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@34 “I just dont want them in power.”
Let us know which floor you will be writhing on the morning after the ’08 election, Dufus. I will pay money to watch that.

@52 How can we get anything done when we’re constantly being distracted by the same old wingnut bullshit about an election that was over 2 years ago? Rossi lost. Close, but no cigar. Rossi lost, pure and simple. There was no Democratic effort to steal the election. There was no ballot box stuffing. No military ballots were thrown into dumpsters. None of that stuff happened. The 2004 election was thoroughly investigated by the Republican lawyers who brought the election contest lawsuit, and also by the Republican U.S. Attorney under intense pressure for leading local Republicans. If these competent and highly motivated professionals couldn’t find any evidence of fraud, that can mean only one thing: There wasn’t any fraud.
