I’m a 37-year-old white male Democrat who has lived in either downtown Seattle or on Capitol Hill since 1992. I’ve been voting Democratic, but I believe in rationality and balance, so I’m getting a little weary of the rhetoric coming from the extreme left. I don’t really go to protests nor approve of them (especially after living through the anti-WTO crap), but I wanted to weigh in on some of the issues raised on tonight’s radio show.
Why didn’t people show up at the anti-war protest today? Many people are tired of the mask wearing goofballs, the people who say they’re there for “fun”, and the ever-present socialists. The “fun” factor comes off as a real lack of sincerity and conviction. Another reason people stayed away is that moderates are more likely willing to give the “surge” a chance.
What should the Democrats in congress do to “stop” the war? They’ve already done what they can do at this point. Some Democrats don’t “get” that. A President’s power to control the military as the Commander-in-Chief has been challenged and re-affirmed over and over again, so “stopping it” won’t happen.
Are Protests a Tool of the Democratic Process?
The woman who called and said that people should live with the President they elected was correct. If the public as a whole is still against the war, or angry about the aftermath, in two short years they can elect someone else — not have perpetual protests. Voting is the key to how our political system works. Impeachments, funding cut-offs, and “violent” protests run counter to the balance that our Democracy provides.
As to whether or not Iraq was a “legal” war, I actually agree with the guy who called to say that Saddam Hussein’s violations of the agreement following the Gulf War were the original cause of the escalation. He was a little off about them attacking US planes in the no-fly zone, but he did have a point. The raving anti-war movement can revise history boil it down to “Bush lied about WMD”, but the reality was much more complicated that that.
Clearly the Bush administration thought Hussein might have more potent weapons, but they certainly blew it by exploiting those false claims as an excuse to invade Iraq.
My take is that the Bush administration thought they could force a coup d’état and guide Iraq toward a Turkey-like secular state. That would have been fine with me. But the popular rhetoric that the whole reason why we’re in Iraq now is “Bush lied about WMD” strikes me as inaccurate.
Should we leave now? I mean right now?
Clearly, no. That would be stupid and counterproductive. The power vacuum would be filled by Iran, which is probably a worse threat to the region!
Finally, I think too many Democrats form opinions based on peer pressure rather than facts. As a History major, like me, Goldie should be more balanced than most, but he still give in to the rhetoric sometimes.

If someone intensely loathes an elected official, the appropriate and lawful remedies are voting them out of office or impeachment. You can legally get away with wishing for, and even praying for, God to strike them down. That’s why Pat Robertson isn’t in jail. And, in my opinion, demanding Nuremberg-style trials followed by judicial imposition of penalty is within the bounds of legal speech. What is proscribed, and of interest to law enforcement, is directly advocating unlawful violence against a public official. In those cases, law enforcement has the authority, and the duty, to check out those people. It can be a fine line, and people who lack emotional restraint could find themselves in hot water.

There has always been plenty of hate in American politics, and given how high the Far Right has ratcheted up the hate meter against liberals in recent years, it should come as no surprise to you that some liberals are in a mood to dish back.
I’m not defending what Badger said, I’m just sayin’, you guys started the shit-flinging so don’t be surprised when some comes back.
I agree with most of what you said. I do believe the far left infiltration into the democratic party over the years has been just as damaging as the fart right if not more. I used to be a democrat but I will not stand with code pink or the other moonbats. I would rather be on the side of the religious right extremists and I am not religious.
Maybe there will come a time when moderates form a new party but the financial problems with that are immense.
Until then we will battle back and forth for ideas we probably don’t really believe in.
I will not wish death on someone or claim to have the power to sick the government on them though. That is way over the line in my opinion.

A recent issue of U.S. News and World Report, which you may still be able to find on local newsstands, contains an article in which historians and political scientists speculate on how history will grade Bush’s presidency. According to the article, Bush hopes to be remembered as a Trumanesque figure who bucked popular opinion to do the right thing. But the consensus of academics is that Bush is no Truman and is at serious risk of being remembered as a “failed president.”
I thought this was about a ‘pork-pulled’ sandwich. Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between” Republican’s pork pulled sandwiches and Democrat’s pork-pulled sandwiches. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like “America Deceived’ from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason. Look at the bright side, when we have to vote the Democrats out, we’ll have no choice but to vote for a Third Party.

It was an interesting afternoon in Seattle yesterday. Not because there was another march to protest the war in Iraq, but rather it was who was marching. I saw many more young people participating than I have seen in previous protests. Now, young to me is anyone under 40. There appears to be an awaking from the the generations who will be paying for Bush’s war and failed, corrupt administration. I’ve had my day in the sun and lived America’s dream when it came to having livable wages and sending my children to college. I have medical insurance and look forward to each day without fear of poverty, but those in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s will be spending enormous amounts of their income paying off Bush’s binge and make no mistake the wealthy and super rich will be off on vacation when the bill comes due.
