As the state Legislature enters the final days of the session, one of the pressing issues they are addressing is SB 6533, which would provide restaurants a B&O tax credit on fifty percent of the $1/gallon tax on carbonated soft drink syrup?
WTF?
Not only would this tax break drain $10 million a year from state coffers — money that could be used, say… to provide health coverage for 10,000 children — it would incentivize businesses to sell and market a product that is harmful to children’s health.
This is not just a classic example of special interest tax legislation, it is just plain stupid… and the Children’s Alliance wants you to tell your legislators to vote no. They’ve set up a Take Action form that makes it easy for you to send an email to Gov. Gregoire and your own district representatives, asking them to oppose thus unnecessary tax credit. It is always more effective if you write your own personal message in the available field, but all you really need to do is just fill in your address information and click send.
Let’s send a message that if businesses want to talk about tax breaks, they need to do so in the context of broader tax restructuring. I’ve sent my email. Please send yours.

Goldy spews:
Cynical… what you want to do is pick apart the tax base bit by special interest bit. What I want is a total overhaul… tax restructuring that simplifies the code and makes it fairer and less regressive. For example, the Sims proposal would have eliminated the B&O tax entirely, and replaced it with nothing. I could have supported that within the context of the entire proposal.
So my feeling is, until the business community is willing to sit down and talk restructuring, I wouldn’t pass another tax break. Not a single one.

This is yet another example of how people don’t understand the cause and effect of their actions, their taxes, or their greed.
These tax breaks enrich only the rich. Removing this particular tax means an increased need for health care funding down the road, while the businesses enjoy their vacations on their profits.
This is similar to what BushCo and Repugs try to do with the WIC program: cut the funding for poor people so that we all have to pay higher health care costs down the road. (btw, the WIC program saves 4-5 DOLLARS in health care cost for ever dollar spent on WIC.)
I think Goldy has a point…restructure the system first, then the tax breaks.
Mr. Cynical spews:
Goldy–
I agree that B&O tax is ridiculous.
I agree that State & Federal Tax Codes must be revised.
I believe in a Flat Tax.
I believe in paying for services received.
I do not believe in using taxes to redistribute wealth.
I believe in PRIVATE organizations providing charity….not the government thry “taxation”.
I believe in calling it what it is…..charity.
When someone pays less than average for basic services, he/she is receiving “charity”.
When someone pays more, they are giving “charity”.
The government is the least efficient, least desirable entity to provide charity. Basic services….infrastructure, safety, defense. Period. Even Public Education has unraveled to the point of being preposterous. Competition is the only answer.
I do not hold the Republicans harmless in the cost & growth of government. Far from it. That is why I do not subscribe to either political party.
It is politically incorrect and might make someone feel bad to point out that they pay $500 in taxes & fees….and receive $10,000 in services….(when their neighbor pays $10,000), that they are receiving CHARITY.
We have created an environment of jealousy and anger. One group feels “entitled”….another group resents being forced to support them.

WAL-MART PAYS BLOGGERS TO POST P.R. MESSAGES
“Wal-Mart Enlists Bloggers in P.R. Campaign
By MICHAEL BARBARO, The New York Times
“(March 7) – Brian Pickrell, a blogger, recently posted a note on his Web site attacking state legislation that would force Wal-Mart Stores to spend more on employee health insurance. ‘All across the country, newspaper editorial boards — no great friends of business — are ripping the bills,’ he wrote.
“It was the kind of pro-Wal-Mart comment the giant retailer might write itself. And, in fact, it did.
“Several sentences in Mr. Pickrell’s Jan. 20 posting — and others from different days — are identical to those written by an employee at one of Wal-Mart’s public relations firms and distributed by e-mail to bloggers.
“Under assault as never before, Wal-Mart is increasingly looking beyond the mainstream media and working directly with bloggers, feeding them exclusive nuggets of news, suggesting topics for postings and even inviting them to visit its corporate headquarters.
… ”
For complete story, see http://articles.news.aol.com/b.....&cid=
Roger Rabbit spews:
P.S. — Pickrell runs a right-wing (what else?) blog called “Iowa Voice,” and he’s catching blowback for his mercenary activities … he writes today:
“I’m dealing with a bunch of comment trolls and hate mail from liberal/socialist/moonbats, so I’m going to be busy for most of the day. That means I, myself, won’t be posting much today, if at all.
“For the record, I could care less if anyone believes what I wrote here or in other posts. What I wrote is my opinion, and nobody else’s.
I don’t see the story here, really. … In my opinion, it’s not important to the story I’m talking about, really. … If Wal-Mart … had paid me to write those things, that would be a different story altogether. … But they didn’t. … ”
Yeah right. OK, Brian. Whatever.
spyder spews:
Well in the interest of charity, let’s make sure the next generations really need more of it, by promoting the industry whose marketing and sales technologies are funded by some of the most sophisticated research available. We can make the product more attractive and cheaper and increasingly more toxic (high fructose corn syrup now attributed to all manner of health issues). And while we are at it, we should enrich that industry at the expense of everyone just for some sort of libertarian decency too. WTF? In a study released yesterday:
NUTRITION SOFT DRINK OBESITY – Soft drinking teens pile on pounds. According to a study released Monday, the number of overweight children is on the rise worldwide and by the end of the decade the number of overweight children will have caused a strain on our health system as they age. It is estimated that just under half of the children in North and South America will be overweight by 2010, up from about 28%. In Europe, about 38% of the children will be overweight, compared to 25% currently.
Dr. James said researchers had analyzed reports from 1980 to 2005 as well as World Health Organization data. They found data for trends over time covering school-age populations in 25 countries and preschool-age children in 42 countries.
In the drinks study, a team at Boston’s Children’s Hospital monitored the weight of 103 teenagers, putting half of them on unsweetened or artificially-sweetened drinks and letting the other half continue to consume sugary drinks. They concluded that a single 330ml can a day of sweetened drinks could lead teens to put on 1lb every three or four weeks.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Well, maybe it’s true that Wal-Mart didn’t grease Pickrell’s palms with silver — they wouldn’t have to. He’s a cheap labor conservative, so he’s on the same page with Big Wally to start with. But there’s this thing called attribution: When you pass off something written by a corporate P.R. department as your own work, you deceive your audience.
It’s called lying.
But then, that’s not news — deceit and lying are SOP for right wing blogs, aren’t they?
Roger Rabbit spews:
It sure is fun to watch these assholes get caught doing something intellectually dishonest, though. We know they’re intellectually dishonest, but still, the world wants proof; and it’s so satisfying to catch them red-handed.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Washington’s tax code is so heavily laden with special interest tax exemptions the earth’s mantle is beginning to buckle under the weight. That was the real cause of the Nisqually Earthquake — the bedrock cracked under Olympia!
These special interest tax exemptions are a major part of the reason why the state tax burden is disproprotionately borne by consumers and small businesses, while big business is lightly tax. Those lacking resources to hire lobbyists and buy politicians get the shaft.
Bills like this make our state tax structure even more regressive. Since it seems to be impossible to control special interest tax breaks, ultimately the only solution is the scrap our tax code and replace it with a fair state income tax.
Roger Rabbit spews:
“We can make the product more attractive and cheaper and increasingly more toxic (high fructose corn syrup now attributed to all manner of health issues).”
I’m not sure if Splenda(R) falls in this category or is a chemical sweetener, but Splenda(R) makes Roger Rabbit violently ill. Every time I’ve eaten a product with Splenda(R) in it, the intestinal cramps were so agonizing I thought I was dying … I’m not kidding. This is the kind of allergy you go to the hospital for … now I read the labels of ALL diet products, ‘cuz I’ve learned from hard experience that I have to avoid Splenda(R) like poison — because to me, it is.

Don’t make it more complicated than it really is to understand. Here’s the test:
Wealthy Democrats, especially those in politics are willing to pass legislation to TAX themselves at higher rates (the 1% wage earners).
Wealthy Republicans, especially those in politics are NOT willing to pass legislation to TAX themselves at higher rates (the 1% wage earners).
What’s the difference?
Democrats know their history and understand that concentrations of wealth and power are a threat to democracy.
Republicans don’t give a rats ass about democracy and are operating at unprecedented levels of corruption in government.

Mr. Cynical, are you prepared to face the reality of the US Government of 2006 under 12 years of Republican Rule? One of the hardest things that many individuals (including myself) have trouble overcoming is in the face of irrefutable evidence; they will make a million excuses because they are unable to deal with the truth that the people they trust are screwing them.
Are the deficits fiction? Did the Democrats create them? Why do you complain about the Democrats in Washington State raising taxes to pay for items the people want; and yet you ignore the Republicans at the Federal Level borrowing money to pay for things the people want? Which is the greater evil?
You claim that you support neither party, but who you voted for determines policy at all levels of Government. I am also an Independent, but I support most of the Democratic Candidates because the majority of their policies agree with my own.
If Dino Rossi and his people ran the State of Washington, yes, there would be tax cuts. But you can damn well believe that there would be no reduction in spending. They would piss the Billion dollar surplus away but would double allocations just to get reelected. And you can also bet that they will make a million excuses (just like their Federal Cousins) why this is not such a bad thing.
Janet S spews:
Roger – go whine at the Times and PI for running press releases as news items. They do it all the time. It is easier than paying reporters and actually checking to see if the story is true.
