Since Alberto had little experience in criminal law, perhaps he doesn’t know what it is to commit perjury.
Maybe he thinks the president can absolve him.

Gonzales was never qualified for the post anyway. Technically, he might have the pretty pieces of heavy-stock embossed paper with legal degrees on them, but he lacked our American values. He claimed to believe in a “unitary executive”, blissfully ignoring the entire Vice-Presidency, and Senatorial powers of confirmation. He believed that torture could ever be possibly justified, and the fictional “unitary executive” could do so. Had he faced a real confirmation hearing — and what was he doing at such a thing, if the “unitary executive” had appointed him, anyway? — he would have received the treatment that similarly un-American Judge, Mr. Robert Bork, rightly got.
He’d better have a good lawyer. He testified under oath that no political motive lurked behind the firing of McKay & co. Gonzales and Libby might find themselves showering together at Club Fed, real soon.

NBC News reported tonight that someone impersonating the Barack Obama campaign is running vicious attack ads against Hillary Clinton on the internet, and so far no one has been able to identify the perpetrators. However, as NBC reports, these are no amateur ads; they’re slick commercial productions that obviously cost a lot of money to make and distribute.

I don’t believe the dirty tricks, lies, and “swiftboat” ads will be as effective this time around. The public has been educated and knows what to expect from the Dirty Right. In the end, these tactics will backfire, because decent people will be offended by them. That’s why they need to commit election fraud and illegal voter suppression to sustain their “majority” status. The U.S. Attorney scandal is all about election fraud. There are two pieces to it — (1) committing election fraud on a massive scale, and (2) shifting the blame from guilty Republicans to innocent Democrats. It’s a brilliant concept — not only did they intend to steal elections, but also to blame the thefts on their opponents! It might have worked, too, if they hadn’t gotten ham-handed with a group of folks who value their professional reputations and integrity above party loyalty.
The idea that someone might put something — anything — ahead of party loyalty apparently never occurred to Bush, Rove, and Gonzales. And that’s how it came undone.
