Open Thread (wash your hands)

I feel like a lot of the wash you hands messages are geared to children. And I get it: Teach the people who can most easily develop lifetime habits. And maybe they can teach their parents things.

That’s good, but for adults: Wash your fucking hands. Are you near a sink? Wash them now. Are you somewhere that you can’t wash your hands? Make a plan for the next time you can wash your hands, and then go do it. Also, to men and other users of the men’s room specifically, wash your hands after using the urinal. Even if you hadn’t literally just touched your penis, it’s still a good idea.

    Last Friday Billionaire slob Bill Gates announced that in his expert opinion the US reliance on the private sector to respond to and contain the spread of corona virus will result in failure.

    In essays and public press releases emanating from his private wealth foundation, Gates argued that in order to succeed, massive public sector investment will be needed in opening thousands of new free clinics staffed with hundreds of thousands of front line health care workers to monitor and treat US citizens, huge manufacturing facilities to respond to the need for testing and vaccines, new technology developed by the public sector to provide passive monitoring and detection in public spaces, and a massive expansion of the federal government role in supporting, facilitating, and paying for all of this. An effort he estimates would cost US taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.

    Oh. Did I also mention that Mr. Gates is a committed opponent of public option health insurance? He says the only way for any of this to work would be if taxpayers fund all of it. But at the same time those public investments need to made be in the private sector. He wants US and other taxpayers to just give this money to big pharma and the hospital corporations. Oh, and incidentally in case you were wondering, he remains just as committed in his opposition to large increases in cap gains and estate taxes or any other forms of “wealth” tax.

    Survey data of Trump voters consistently indicate that they rank “fear of illness/disease” well ahead of “fear of Socialism” or even “fear of AOC”.

    So spending the rest of 2020 watching their elected leaders go golfing while their neighbors drop dead might have some effect. But it’s always worth remembering that these are Republicans.

    @8 some of it is loss through the process of evaporation of wet towels. Not to mention all the paper towels that will also be used (or cotton cloth towels – made from rabbit tails) and discarded.

    Also, some evaporation is occurring as the dirty sudsy germ infested water makes its way to the treatment plant and during the treatment process.

    @16 Water in the form of water vapor or sewage water is still in the environment. Just not in the aquifer or storage reservoir it came out of. It’ll eventually be there again, or in some other aquifer or storage reservoir, or in the oceans.
