Why are rightwing fringefucks so scared of gay people? Is it that such fear is just part and parcel of the cowardly perspective with which fringefucks look upon life in general, or is there something else going on? Are they afraid of gays because of their own sexual insecurities? If people want to serve their nation, and are competent to do so, then we should let them do so and express our gratitude to them.

Of course, we could try to actually discuss the issue, and break through some of the stereotypes and bigotry involved, but it’s much more fun to just make fun of the sex habits of others.
And that, of course, is exactly the attitude that keeps this issue from being discussed and solved.
The uniformed military has always been perceived as hide-bound and reactionary. Pretty funny, when you consider that the military was integrated racially long before private industry would even consider the matter, and it isn’t, for the most part, the uniformed military that is keeping women from taking on any roles that they can physically perform in.
Not that we’re entirely comfortable with change, just that we are trained to take orders and try to make them work. I knew lots of old Sailors that were sure that putting women onboard ships would be a terrible mistake. But when those same Sailors were told to make it work, they did their best and were willing to be proven wrong.
“Don’t ask” was always considered to be a silly policy by most folks in the Navy, but we did our best with the policy. We thought it silly because, living in close quarters, everyone pretty much knew everyone else’s business.
And it left open the possibility that one disgruntled individual would “out” someone that they had a personal grudge against, or one senior officer that wasn’t entirely “with the program” would go on a witch hunt.
It was also known as an easy way out of an unpleasant assignment.
Senior military folks have known all of this for years. It isn’t the uniformed military that have been the primary stumbling block here. It’s been the politicians, pandering to the prejudices of the ignorant.
The issues in the video are real. I’ve been assigned to units where we lost critical personnel at critical times, either because some yahoo had a personal grudge or just couldn’t get past his own bigotry.
Kicking out Arabic translators at this time is absurd, and I’m willing to bet that the Commanding Officers of those individuals would agree, but unfortunately their hands are tied by the rules and laws handed down by Congress and the President.
Some military members won’t like doing away with the rules regarding homosexuals in the military. We draw recruits from the general public, and the general public is more than a bit conflicted on this issue.
But if the politicians will get onboard with the idea of gays and lesbians in uniform, then the uniformed military will make it work.
It’s what we do.
We may argue about tactics and strategies, or the extent to which we are partisans versus ideologues. And believe me, we do.
But there’s no disagreement among us that the modern conservative movement of Newt and Grover and Karl and Rush has proven to be a dangerous cultural and political cancer on the body politic.
You will not find anyone amongst us who believes that the Bush administration’s executive power grab and flagrant partisan use of the federal government is anything less than an assault on the Constitution.
We stand together against the dissolution of habeas corpus, and the atoricities of Abu Grahib and Guantanamo.
And we all agree that Islamic terrorism is a threat, but one that we cannot meet with military power alone.
And yes, a vast majority of us were against this mindless invasion of Iraq from the beginning, or at least saw the writing on the wall long before Peggy Noonan discovered that George W. Bush wasn’t the seocnd coming of Winston Churchill.
Sadly, we also all agree that the mainstream media is part of the problem. Democracy sufferes when not being held accountable by a vigorous press.

You were obviously never in the service. The military is overall a very conservative institution. Always has been, likely always will be. So what you are saying is that you would rather the military be 100% Republican instead of something well over 50% that it currently is.
The individuals in the armed forces largely come from rural areas in the mountain west, midwest, and the south. As well as from the inner city. Sure, there are people that join from the east and west coasts, and the suburbs too. But the military disproportionally comes from the places I mentioned. The military is also made up largely by people who are Christians. Certainly not all or anywhere close to all, but a very large percentage of them are. Certainly in greater proportions than you would find in other professions.
How do I know this? My main point of reference is the 4 years I spent in the Marine Corps from 1988 – 1992. The military culture is one that many people would not fit into. They discriminate against a lot of different people for a lot of different reasons. You, of course, fail to explain how the militaries of our allies have incorporated gay soldiers without any problems. I did over twenty one years active duty, and saw a number of changes. Many of the doomsayers were making the same sort of noises about women onboard combatant ships. Then we were told to make it work, and we did.

Some of those folks are so stubborn that they can hold onto those prejudices past boot camp, but most are not, and those few are unlikely to be candidates for critical jobs. Even your standard issue foot Soldier is a highly trained professional.
Some here might think that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines are such ignorant rednecks that they cannot deal with people that are different.

The Marine Corps is a division of the Department of the Navy. The Marine Corps historically has been an amphibious fighting force that has assaulted beaches from ships. The training and fitness standards are also higher than other branches. It is harder to become a Marine than to join other branches.

Buses can change routes based on developments etc. How much will it cost to move a sound transit line, not to mention maintain it? You would be right except that they are the least likely to vote among all voters. Another thing, most of these people are just graduating and starting their careers. They don’t yet have that big a stake in the system. Its easy to be a leftist when you know nothing and have nothing. Throw in a marriage, a couple of kids, a mortgage, and a promotion or two later and people become more conservative as they become real “grown ups”.

So what you are telling me is that if the scripture in question did not come out of the mouth of Jesus, then you just discard it? If that’s the case you might as well throw the entire Bible in the trash. Read II Timothy 3:16 (that would be after I Timothy and before Titus in case you didn’t know) where it reads “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. This includes scripture other than what Jesus utters. There are a lot of things that Jesus never uttered but are in the Bible and are therefore, no less relevant.

Jesus actually gave us a re-interpretation of Leviticus when he spoke what has been called “The Great Commandment”: Love thy Neighbor etc.
That teaching seems to be given a new twist over and over through the years. In 1640 George Herbert recorded as a proverb this qualified version: “Love your neighbor, yet pull not down your hedge” — in short, “No Tresspassing.” Ben Franklin liked this so well he included in Poor Richard’s Almanac. Woodrow Wilson gave us this version in 1912: “No one can love his neighbor on an empty stomach”.
Eugen O’Neill went a little further in 1926 by saying:”Fear thy neighbor as thyself.”

Now Jesus identifies to the world who He is:
John 10:30: “I and my Father are one.”
John 14:9: Jesus says, “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”
So if Jesus and His Father are one and Jesus said the people are not keeping God’s law, Jesus is saying we need to keep God’s law.
If you read and comprehended the Bible through His Guide, the Holy Spirit, you could figure this out too. But your “god” is someone else, not the Son of God!

Quoting scripture to non-Christians is an exercise in futility.
Some of the folks here have challenged you based on scripture. This indicates that they are familiar with the scriptures, and as you have professed to be Christian, are expecting you to live up to them.
Angrily firing different scriptures back at them is silly. They haven’t (for the most part) claimed to be Christian, so expecting them to acknowledge your scripture-based argument won’t work.
(I’ve been known to quote the Qur’an to Muslims. That doesn’t mean that I acknowledge it as the word of God, simply that I know that the person I’m speaking to does.)
So, when a non-Christian points out that you appear to be ignoring Jesus’ clear, direct instructions, firing back with verses out of Leviticus or Romans merely reinforced the perception that you are being hypocritical.

Its amazing how people can find 1 single verse and hang their entire philosophical hat on it while refusing to examine the verse in context and against other passages in the Bible. When a non believer throws out versus in a challenging fashion to someone who IS a believer, it really shouldn’t be dignified with a response. To a non believer, the Bible is not going to be a useful guide unless you first make that committment to Jesus Christ. It will only be used as a weapon in attacking belivers so why bother engaging someone on that level if they don’t believe in the Bible to begin with.
What’s really amazing is that the right wingers can ignore the parts of the Bible that talk about charity, love and peace and instead hang their entire philosophical hat on the parts that talk about anything else.

Having said that, Proud is quite right. There is no reference to homosexuality in the Gospel’s. That does not, of course, mean that homosexuality is acceptable in God’s eye, but one really does have to wonder, given the issues where Jesus did place emphasis, which is the more grievous trespass: that of the homosexual or yours.
As for citation, I’m addressing you. I’m assuming you know what I’m citing, and that specific references aren’t necessary. On the other hand, if you don’t really know, then I’d be more than happy to inform you.
A few more thoughts:
First, you have no idea who my friends are, so I’m not sure how you can claim to have found anything illogical about what my friends have said. Are you now claiming a sufficient level of omniscience as to know things about me that are not evident here?
