I heard Bernie Sanders on Thom Hartmann’s program this morning. Question for all of you: Should Social Security be made needs-based? That is, if one has a defined benefit plan or defined contribution plan, should his or her social security be reduced or even eliminated in order that Social Security can provide retirement income to those who have no other source of retirement funding?

Actually, I didn’t express an opinion about the matter in my comment at 17. I am concerned, however, about not at least getting my payroll deductions back in retirement. Not getting those funds back, even if over a period of time, would truly be unfair.

I think support for Social Security would vanish if it were made need-based. If people pay in, they should get back.

Thats is the problem right there. You cannot dehumanize your rival, in the light of their own dehumanization of theirs. That implies their inability to reason within their own belief system, when they so clearly can. It absolves them of responsibility for their actions.
When their words create actions that reflect their vitriol, you must hold them responsible as humans. Automatons cannot be held responsible, humans can.
