    The deepest recession in modern times has sharply increased the ranks of the poor during the past year, with 1 in 7 people in America officially counted as living in poverty.
    The news from a US Census Bureau report released Thursday underscores how deeply the Great Recession has affected the nation’s standard of living.
    Some 43.6 million people were living in poverty last year – the highest number since 1959, five years before President Lyndon Johnson declared his War on Poverty. (The US government considers an annual income of $21,756 to be the poverty line for a family of four.)

    Conservatives, do we, as a society have any responsibility to do anything about Americans living in poverty?

    Is this a good summation of the the conservative position on poverty?

    If you want to help the poor, we should cut taxes for those with money and get rid of regulation that stifle business.
    Lower wages and benefits for all public employees to offset the lower tax income.

    The constitution doesn’t allow for social programs, those in poverty should turn to local religious and secular charities for help.

    If you are in poverty, the government has no responsibility to help you improve yourself or to support you and your children.

    It’s up to you and your individual initiative and skills to find a better job or even any job. By your action or inaction you descended into poverty, get yourself out.

    The sad thing is that many of the people living in poverty do have jobs, sometimes two or three jobs.

    Stewart and Colbert will also provide all the handwritten signs too. Teabonics will be the standard by which signs must be written.

    In looking at the demographic breakdown of income and wealth of the top .01% of the US population, i find it interesting that the vast majority of these individuals do nothing, in the sense of work, other than increase their own wealth at all other humans’ expense. I would argue, quite vociferously, that creating a financial instrument that is based on defrauding others, and then betting on it to work, reeling in huge amounts of cash and bonuses for doing so, does not constitute honest and real work. However, apparently that is the Real American.

    Well, the conservative talking point is that if those in poverty are not successful in finding a well paid job, it must be they are just not trying hard enough.

    Maybe they don’t want a good paying job.
    Maybe they just like living in poverty and having to work with underpaid and over worked government workers to get government aid.

    In all seriousness this time. Most of the poor out work the wealthy. Some of the wealthy started out poor, but most of them had some wealth to begin with. When you have to get a job at 16 to help support the family, you don’t do as well in school as you could. When you or your family needs money RIGHT NOW, you don’t think long term, you graduate from high school and grab the first full time job you can get. Maybe two. And then you’re too exhausted to think about school or bettering your position. it’s all you can do to tread water and try to stay afloat. That’s why we need things like community colleges and Pell Grants.

    I’m starting to really come around to a position that the CEO of a company should be taxed at 90% on any earning over 20x what the lowest paid employee of their company makes. I’d factor in part time and temp workers too.
    So if their lowest paid employee makes $20,000 a year, the CEO get taxed at 90% on any pay over $400,000.
    Seems fair to me.

    @8. But you have read the conservative posters here. That story falls on deaf ears. Community colleges and Pell Grants cost them money, and they want none of that.
    I really don’t have any idea how to reach a group of people who’s primary filter is if the idea will cost them money. It doesn’t matter if it’s a social justice thing, or if we can prove it plays off 8x over in the long run, if their taxes don’t go down right now, they don’t want it.

    If you click further into that Daily episode, there is a great, extended interview with Bill Clinton (be sure to catch the extended stuff, which is the best).

    In this interview he has Jon and the audience eating out of his hand by the end, articulating the Democrats’ value proposition for 2010. As Jon mentions, if only the party were able to make the case this well.

    I was always ambivalent about Clinton and his presidency, and who wasn’t: the triangulation, sensible moderation, Dick Morris, the neoliberal consensus, whatever. But oh man, he is brilliant. So smart he outsmarts himself.
