Howard Dean defines the new Democratic Party:
“We are going to do the 50-state strategy for the next 150 years so we can be the dominant party power in this country again,” he said. “You can’t be the powerful party in this country who controls the government unless you are willing to let the people control you. And the only way you can do that is ask everybody for their vote, understand everybody is our boss even if they vote for you or not.”

“Though the post-victory haze, I perceived a final pathetic spin, based in the fiction that the people still respond to Bush’s supposed charisma: that to lay a Democrat glove-of-impeachment on the president would alienate the electorate big-time. We were being urged to forgive, forget, and all get along. As in forget the lies and the spies, the Constitution and Geneva Conventions, the war profiteering and the body count. Forget that New Orleans’s 9th Ward is still in ruins, forget the inflated homophobia, the decimated middle class, for-profit health care, reproductive rights and embryonic stem cells, and all the small-time insanity, like the Terri Schiavo debacle. Forget My Pet Goat and the War on Christmas? And the accusations of everything from treason to dementia leveled at most of my friends?
Believe me, I have no inclination to forget any single damned thing, or to make any attempt to get along. I want to see every dirty secret dragged out and exposed, until George W. Bush is doing the Nixon perp-walk to the helicopter.”

Gee, anybody else notice that JCH and MTR have been missing from these threads for over a week?
Perhaps after the Nov. 7th elections they are in hiding in their basements, or they threw themselves off a cliff? Perhaps they just are too ashamed to admit that their predictions of an easy Republican victory were wrong, as with every other statement they made? Or perhaps to avoid any of the above, they just changed their log-in name, and are posting under some of the newer names which have appeared in the past week or so?
Or perhaps they were under the payroll of the Republican party, and their job was to distract us from the truth by attempting to divert our discussions in other directions (a common tactic they employed. If this was the case, then they would have dissapeared as soon as their paychecks from the Republican party stopped.

Oh, the new Republican minority leader, in an interview, denied that the massive losses suffered by the party during the Nov. 7th elections were a repudiation of the Republican party by the American electorate.
Instead, he claimed that the elections were “only about Iraq”, and since President Bush had already formed the Baker commission and fired Rusmfield, then it was a “dead issue”, already taken care of.
I heard this on the radio. I wished I could have seen his face. I am always fascinated by people who can look at you with a straight face and tell you a bald-faced lie, and expect you to believe it.

My understanding is that we have GBS to thank for the loss of JCH. I think they had a bet over whether the Dems would take both the House and the Senate. They wagered permanent exile to the loser.
If the Democrats really want to have political power, they need to move towards the middle ground. Having Howard Dean and other like him running the party is not helping the Democrats accomplish that.
What do you mean by “middle ground?” Do you mean that Dean is too liberal or that he is not “bipartisan” enough?

# 1: I’m all for investigations and digging out the truth, but I’m not for impeachment based upon the facts we already know or suspect. Bush only has two more years in office, and and impeachment investigation, hearings, House Resolution, and Senate Trial would take up most of 2007. This raises a couple of problems:
(a) Are there really enough votes for impeachment and removal? I would be surprised if there were.
(b) So, what happens if Bush is impeached? Cheney takes office. He nominates a new Vice-President, subject to approval by the Senate. Then Cheney resigns (alleging health problems), leaving the new Vice-President to take over the Presidency. But if they choose it right, the new Vice-President isn’t damaged by being too close to the Bush administration. Maybe McCain? Then he goes into the final half-year of the 2008 Presidential election with the advantages of incumbency, a feeling of support (“rally-around-the-President in times of crisis”), and his contrast with Bush will be remarkable. As long as he doesn’t pardon Bush and others in the Bush administration (as Ford did), he’s pretty much erased the current Administration’s problems from being an issue the 2008 race, by claiming that the Republican Party has reformed itself, and all of that is “old news”. If they time it right, the new vice-president could still be elected in 2008 and run for re-election in 2012.
It reminds me a little of what Robert E. Lee said, upon hearing of the removal of McClellan from the command of the Army of the Potomic: “If they keep changing their generals, eventually they will find one who I don’t understand”.
I would rather see Bush as the incumbent in 2008, with every Republican candidate pleading with him NOT to make a campaign appearance on their behalf.

rhp6033 spews:
I decided to check out Steffy’s blog to see how he handled dissapointment last week, and to see what sort of “spin” he was giving to the electin. I didn’t get that far.
Instead, I found that on Nov. 15th he was complaining about cartoons in the local papers.
“Whoever chose the cartoons at the Times and the PI in that time period made no effort at all to tell both sides of the story, no effort to let their readers see cartoons from both the left and the right. I don’t think that either newspaper did this as a matter of deliberate policy, but I do think this imbalance shows a deep-seated bias at both newspapers.
Not only were the cartoons biased, on the whole; they were often misinformed, based on false assumptions. Worst of all, the cartoons attacking Bush and the Republicans were rarely funny — and I generally love political cartoons, even those I disagree with. (There were a couple of amusing Oliphant cartoons, but they were the cartoons that did not make a partisan point. And he also did two of the very worst cartoons.)”
Unfortunately for Stephan, its very hard to appreciate a cartoon which skewers your party or its leaders, as he found out. The fact that he only liked the “non-political” ones by Oliphant demonstrates that. After all, there were some GREAT Horsey cartoons in the P.I. during the period which were covered.
Stephan forgets (or ignores) that
(a) Editorial cartoons are on the editorial pages for a purpose. The papers are under no obligation to make sure the cartoonists they hire or publish under syndication are “balanced”.
(b) If the Seattle Times didn’t carry sufficiently pro-Republican cartoons for Stephy’s taste, it probably was because they couldn’t find one. I’m sure the Times would have published a cartoon in favor of repealing the Estate Tax if they could have found one.
(c) So, in the face of Republican disasters in Iraq, federal deficits and national debt at all-time high, American influence and prestige abroad at an all-time low, Republican incompetence and corruption being demonstrated at every level of government, and even Republican congressmen being outed for lurking after their male pages, Stephan believes that the Republican party’s defeat was caused in part by – not enough pro-Republican cartoons in the local papers? That somehow the papers have an obligation to make sure the Republican propoganda is sufficiently publicized in the cartoon pages?

I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin’
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it’s your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people’s blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You’ve thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain’t worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I’m young
You might say I’m unlearned
But there’s one thing I know
Though I’m younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
‘Til I’m sure that you’re dead

“Private Airport Screeners Cheated on Security Tests
“By AARON C. DAVIS, AP
“SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Nov. 18) – Federal transportation security officials and a private security company at San Francisco International Airport cheated on undercover tests of screeners at passenger checkpoints, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has found.
“The department’s Office of Inspector General concluded workers with the Transportation Security Administration and Covenant Aviation Security compromised nearly a year’s worth of tests by using surveillance cameras to track undercover agents as they made their way through the airport. …
“The department found tests were undermined from August 2003 to May 2004 – a period during which officials at the airport were trying to demonstrate that Covenant screeners were as good as or better than TSA screeners.
“San Francisco was the only major airport in the country chosen in 2002 to be part of a pilot program using private security screeners instead of TSA employees. The TSA last month awarded Covenant a four-year contract worth more than $300 million to continue screening at the airport. …
“The investigation began in 2004 after a Covenant screener balked at giving screeners descriptions of undercover agents, then wrote a letter to the TSA detailing the practice. The TSA asked the inspector general’s office to investigate after it received the whistle-blower’s letter. … ”

This is the question I’m asking YOU to answer, you silly wabbit! It has been accomplished right under your little pink wet nose. You can’t figure out how it happened??
I’ll give you a hint….it has to do with a bill passed in the last month or so. And it’s not as readily apparent as lowering taxes or cutting benefits. It’s actually quite brilliant and mainly benefits the lower and middle class folks who are often incapable of saving money on their own. It does not benefit the wealthy…which ought to make you happy Mr. Rabbit.

Mark Foley, the Republican, despite what Faux News would like everyone to believe, is the perverted child molester that gets his rocks off by sending pornographic and probably illegal instant messages to under age boys. We’re all hoping that he gets to spend some time under close supervision, enjoying the company of like minded folks in a secure facility somewhere in Florida.
Tom Foley, the Democrat, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and ambassador to Japan. He served honorably in the US Congress from 1965 to 1995. His thirty year career in Congress was notable for its length and for his steady climb up the ranks of the Congressional and Party leadership.
Please remember, Mark Foley is an embarassment to the Republican party and a disgrace to Congress that belongs behind bars.
Tom Foley is an honorable gentleman that performed his duties as Representative from our state, Speaker of the House, and Ambassador to one of our most important allies in an distinguished and honorable fashion.
The Republicans would love for us to confuse the two of them.
Remember: Mark (as in Mark the Redneck) Foley = dirtbag.
Tom (as in Tom Terrific) Foley = gentleman and statesman.

The thing with CHEAP LABOR CONSERVATIVES is they don’t believe in paying ANYONE. That just more wingnut smoke and mirrors. First, the alleged “connections” are the same old stories that “Abramoff clients” gave Democrats money. Well, Indian tribes ALWAYS gave Democrats money. Abramoff’s job was to funnel all of their money that he could to Republicans. A Republican asked last week about this supposed scandal-in-the-making put it best, saying, “I don’t think Jack Abramoff knows eight Democrats.”

What’s your favorite part of the US Constitution and why?
The framers of the Constitution knew that they did not know what the future would bring. Many of them also believed that there were a number of flaws in the document, but that those flaws would have to be fixed at a later date, as politics and opinions of the time would not allow them to be addressed until later.
But they also made it difficult to amend, so that frivolous changes would not be made, nor would a simple majority be able to impose its will on a minority.
The wisdom to know that you don’t know everything. I would only wish that our current politicians could have such good judgement.

Nothing against any of the three of you, but you do realize that it is easy to be economic Left if you don’t have to work for a living. For example, Mandela came from (at least relative) wealth and the Dalai Lama isn’t putting his plane tickets on his personal Visa card.

Oh, and the Dalai Lama works. He runs a monastery, and travels constantly to teach and speak. I don’t know if he makes much money. My impression is that he’s not too impressed with it.
Nelson Mandela worked as a guard at a mine and as a clerk at a law firm while he finished his university degree, before he started to devoted all of his time and energy fighting apartheid and running the ANC. I don’t think that paid too well either. And I don’t think he was working during the twenty seven years he was in prison.
The Real Mark spews:

Just like any other celebrity, the Dalai Lama exists outside the “real world.” He can afford not to be impressed because I highly doubt he wants for anything. Unlike his followers, he only starves if he chooses to fast. Mandela came from African (tribal?) royalty.
