I was wondering, with all the talk about auto-bailouts, or the death of auto bailouts, and it is turning into a North vs. South issue. Not all UAW-organized plants are in the North, Ford has plants in Kentucky, and GM has some in Kentucky and Tennessee, including the plant where the Corvette is built, in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Now one of the best bus builders in the U.S, is a subsidiary of a Canadian builder, New Flyer. They got a plant in Minnesota, and they just landed another massive order, for over 1400 buses, including up to 900 from the Chicago Transit Authority. New Flyer has an assignable options program, that allows piggybacking of orders. Chicago bought the articulated hybrids after piggybacking on an order from King County Metro, and liked them so well, they just ordered more. This is not exactly the auto industry, but it seems the bus builders are doing well. So are the Rail builders. The Assignable option strategy works there as well, Siemens landed a massive order from the Utah Transit Authority, but they only need the 77 firm orders, and maybe a few of the 180 options they took out. Buying in bulk helps. New Flyer has had some flops, like the Invero, but they continue doing good business. Even with more foreign(outside of North America) competitors coming in, from all corners of the world.

An interesting situation developing with Piracy in the Indian Ocean. The EU has a task force in that area protecting some ships, even some German Warships are taking part. The Navy having the most effect against these pirates based out of Somalia? The Indian Navy. So far it is surface warships, but India’s sole carrier, the Viraat, could do some damage to the Pirate bases in Somalia. It is the former HMS Hermes, and although it embarks Sea Harriers, the Argentines learned the hard way that the Harrier can pack a punch! In fact, the HERMES was part of the Task Force that was sent to re-take the Falklands. One last combat action before the Royal Navy retired her and sold her to India. If the Viraat is suddenly nowhere to be found in Indian Waters, I would not want to be the pirates.

India is building up their Navy, including carriers. They are buying a Used Russian Carrier and building two of their own.
I’m generally against testing, but I would be interested to see how Bush’s and Obama’s results would compare on a PAT (Presidential Aptitude Test). Obama would sweep, but of course, Bush would see the flaw in the test because there would be no sections on Tyranny, Constitutional Subversion, Foolish Consistency, and so on. Presidents have multiple intelligences!

Here’s an interesting tidbit. It appears that at least some folks from the outgoing administration are not happy with the nomination of Mr. Holder as Attorney General. Mr. Rove is apparently leading a “behind the scenes” campaign to prevent his being confirmed by the Senate.
At least some of the speculation as to why Mr. Rove is leading this charge says that it is simply a matter of giving the Obama administration a loss. But I’m not so sure.
The Attorney General will be an important voice in the decisions regarding prosecution of the crimes committed during the Bush administration.
Somehow I doubt that Mr. Rove would choose to oppose an ineffective nominee just to thumb his nose at President Obama. He probably does want to hand the new administration a loss, but I doubt that this is his only motivation. There are easier, higher profile targets.
Until now, I didn’t have much of an opinion about Mr. Holder one way or the other. He was Mr. Obama’s choice, and that was all.
But you can learn something about a person by observing his friends, and even more by observing his enemies.
Mr. Holder has very good taste in enemies.

AIPAC is a powerful political action committee. Nobody seriously disputes that.
But manofwhatever takes it beyond that. I thought about editing this for capitalization and punctuation, but decided to just give it as written.
Any powerful political action committee needs to be watched. By definition, they have their own agenda, and that agenda may not be in the overall best interests of the country.
But this fellow goes way beyond that. According to his post, AIPAC (and by extension, the Jews) is the reason that the Bush administration went to war in Iraq, and has so much influence over the Obama administration that it could dictate his choice for Chief of Staff, and will force him to go to war in Iran.
There is a difference between being sceptical about the agenda of a political action committee and being a tinfoil-hat conspiracy theorist.
And if you aren’t careful, those tinfoil hat types can lead you, through apparently reasonable steps, to a conclusion that is so absurd as to be laughable.
