I don’t follow “professional” “sports” all that closely and didn’t really know who Sean Taylor was, but it seems to me that if some white celeb athlete had gotten shot to death in his home in an intruder situation (whatever it turns out to be), we wouldn’t be reading the equivalent of his rap sheet. So yeah, the black sportswriters have a point.

BlueEyedBuddhist spews:
Paul, you’re off base on this one. Black or white, a guy with the history that Taylor had would get exactly that kind of mention if he was mysteriously shot by an unknown intruder in his own home. Plain and simple.
While a troubled past doesn’t automatically mean that a guy is going to continue getting into trouble, let’s face it- whether white or black (or any other race, for that matter) if someone has been “troubled” in the past they’re more likely than someone without such a past to KEEP having problems in the future.
This isn’t racist; it’s common sense (and indeed points out why we should work harder to keep folks of all races out of trouble in the first place.)
But the coverage of Taylor wouldn’t have changed if he’d been white. The guy has been involved in multiple crimes, has been flakey about doing business (firing two different agents and complaining about his contract… that he signed) and played dirty on the field (lots of late hit penalties).
What’s more, your typical random citizen- even your typical random football player- doesn’t get attacked and killed this way. There’s probably more to the story. For example, the ATF was part of the investigation of the murder. That’s significant because they don’t normally investigate murders; it suggests that there’s more to this than just a random home invasion/robbery/shooting.
Given all this, I think the black sports media should just pipe down on the whole “race” card and see how the story turns out. If they’re right and this was a random thing and the guy really had been clean and living well for the past year or whatever, they can complain about it later.
But if they’re wrong and the guy was up to something, and this killing wasn’t just random (and when someone breaks into your home, into your bedroom, and shoots YOU while ignoring everyone and everything else in the house, it’s almost certainly NOT random) then they owe all the people they just accused of being racist an apology.

The sad thing is that this is just another case of the US catching up with the rest of the world. Elite athletes being menaced is nothing new:
South America’s top soccer stars routinely move their entire families into hiding to protect them from gangs intent on kidnapping family members for ransom. There are documented reports of such situations ending in those family members being killed even though exorbitant ransoms were paid, and the kidanppers went free.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian mafia attempted on numerous occasions to extort money from Russian and other ex-Soviet players who were now plying their trades in the NHL and in Europe’s top leagues.
And several Major League baseball players from the Caribbean and Central America moved their entire families to the US for safety after recieving threats against them.
In the case of Taylor, it appears that someone just had it in for them. His home had been broken into just a few weeks before, and it may very well have been the same person that killed him. People can talk all they want about Taylor’s past and his personal problems, but what we should do is offer our prayers and sympathies to his family, and to his infant daughter who, along with her mother, were in the house at the time of the attack, and could’ve very well have been killed alongside Taylor.

The race to the bottom characterizes today’s Republican Party. Pandering and posturing are the attributes that are most respected among that party’s presidential candidates. Giuliani and Romney run from their past faster than they’ve ever run in their lives. It is great amusement, though, at the same time, sad to watch how these fellows will do or say anything to get their pathetic party’s nomination.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@31 Your source for that is National Review?
Bwaaaahaaaaaharharharharharharharhar HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!!!
Here are the facts:
Hillary Rodham worked for Treuhaft’s firm for only 3 months, and only as a student intern.
Rodham worked on child custody cases.
This was in 1971.
Treuhaft was a crusader for labor and civil rights, and given that the U.S. communist party
“played a defining role in the U.S. labor movement from the 1920s through the 1940s, originating or helping to originate most of the country’s major industrial unions … and pursuing intense anti-racist activity in workplaces and city communities” (Wikipedia)
it’s hardly shocking that he affiliated himself with this group. However, he dissociated himself with the party in 1958, years before Rodham worked as a summer intern for his firm.
After graduating from law school, spent a year in postgraduate studies of children and medicine at Yale Child Study Center and published a scholarly paper titled ‘Children Under the Law’ which is still frequently cited. She then worked for the Children’s Defense Fund and the Carnegie Council on Children.
It’s pretty obvious she was attracted to Treuhaft’s firm by the opportunity to work for a social reformer on children’s issues, and not by his political views, and in any case he had long since left the communist party behind him.
And this is your basis for calling her a “communist”?
No wonder you don’t have any credibility.

“Fiscal record
“Club for Growth argues that he increased state spending 65.3 percent ….
“The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration states that … taxes were raised twenty-one times for an increase of $883 million dollars.
“According to a National Review writer, … the state’s general obligation debt shot up by almost $1 billion.
“Huckabee publicly opposed the repeal of a sales tax on groceries and medicine in 2002, signed a bill raising taxes on gasoline in 1999, and signed a $5.25 bed-tax on private nursing home patients in 2001. These taxes … increased ‘average Arkansan’s tax burden from $1,969 in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 1997, to $2,902 in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2005 ….’
“The Cato Institute, a libertarian … foundation, gave Huckabee an ‘F’ for spending and tax policy in 2006. …
“Grover Norquist … called the governor a ‘serial tax increaser’ ….
Oooooo — a big spender AND a tax-raiser-upper too! Not only that he’s also a liar:
“The 1999 gas and fuel tax hikes were never on the ballot in Arkansas, but Huckabee has told reporters that ‘the fuel tax was a vote of the people — eighty percent of the people voted to improve roads’, and his manager has stated that ‘more than 80% of the voters supported a four cent tax on diesel fuel to fix the roads’ …. Huckabee’s manager has said that … the citizens were responsible for the increases in taxation. However the tax increase was signed into law over two months before the voters approved a bond issue which did not include the gas tax increases.”
But wait! There’s more!
“Handling of the Wayne Dumond case
“Huckabee has also come under criticism for his handling of the case of Wayne Dumond, a convicted rapist who was released during Huckabee’s governorship and who subsequently sexually assaulted and murdered a woman in Missouri.
“Dumond’s case had attracted national attention in the mid 1990s from critics of President Bill Clinton who felt the former Arkansas Governor had been too harsh with Dumond because Dumond’s victim was a distant Clinton relative.
“Even before taking office, Huckabee met with Dumond’s wife and privately announced his intention that Dumond be set free, stating his unhappiness with the way Clinton had handled the case. …
“On September 20, 1996, Huckabee publicly announced his intention of commuting Dumond’s sentence …. There was strong opposition to Huckabee’s plan, leaving Huckabee in a difficult situation politically. On October 31, 1996, Huckabee met privately with the parole board to talk about the Dumond case. On January 16, 1997, Dumond was granted parole, just five months after he had been rejected. Huckabee released a statement saying, ‘I concur with the board’s action …. The action of the board accomplishes what I sought to do in considering an earlier request for commutation ….'”
I can see the TV ads already! We’ll run them in black, Hispanic, and Asian precincts. He looks exactly like a white-supremacist Arkansas cracker. http://www.crimelibrary.com/gr.....Dumond.jpg
“Gift registry
“In November 2006, both Huckabee and his wife drew criticism for creating wedding registries in the amount of over $6000 at both the Target and Dillard’s web sites, in conjunction with a housewarming party to celebrate a new house they had purchased in Little Rock. The Arkansas Times … noted that wedding gifts represent one of the exceptions to a $100 cap on gifts to political leaders under Arkansas law.
“Huckabee said that the registries … were classified as wedding registries … because those sites did not have separate categories for housewarming parties.”

He’ll be someone’s nominee, but probably not the GOP’s. After the Dobsonites bolt at Giuliani’s nomination (though there have been rumors that Rudito would nominate Huckster to be his Veep to try to placate them – like with the ‘endorsement’ of Pat Robertson), they would probably invite Huckabee to run on their ticket if they decided to stage a third- (or fourth-, if Ron Paul takes his millions and goes independent when the GOP likely ignores him come convention time) party candidacy. What it all amounts to in the end though, is a Democrat in the White House, with near supermajorities in both houses of Congress.
