The legislature adjourned Sine Die over the weekend. Some stuff passed that even recently seemed impossible: Rent stabilization, even if it’s not as far as I would like, and parking reforms especially seemed like impossible tasks just a few years ago.
And yet. And yet. Without a wealth tax, the budget is still cuts heavy. Shame.
I am still going to tell you to write to your legislator, but things aren’t as urgent now that the session is over.
It’s unpossible that people can be seeing no price cuts in groceries, price hikes on Chinese goods, no tourists arriving, deporting toddler citizens and NOT love me!

@8 It’s pretty standard for utilities to put capital costs into their rate requests. Happens here in Washington, too, and whenever they try to pull that stunt, I submit a comment to the Utilities & Transportation Commission stating that if I have to contribute capital to the utility then I want shares of stock in return.
The way it should work is investors provide the capital to build the facility, then state regulators allow a rate that includes a reasonable ROE. In other words, if I’m the customer, you provide money to build the generating plant, and I pay an electric bill that includes ~10% return for the investors.
Making me pay for the plant, then charging me a profit for the shareholders, is a double-dipping ripoff. It’s even worse if I have to pay for a plant that generates electricity for a giant corporation.
Even in Louisiana, folks probably aren’t dumb enough to fall for this scam, but corrupt state politicians and regulators in bed with the corporations might not leave them a choice. About all anyone can do is avoid living in a state that treats its citizens like that.
hi
10,
Former teachers and classmates of the young Stephen Miller have consistently described him as a disturbed kid who had no friends and corroborate stories about him smearing craft glue over his arms, letting the substance dry, peeling it off, and then eating it.
Forced into quitting is more like it.
Destroyed his brand value for nothing.
“Rent stabilization” is just a euphemism for rent control. During wartime, price controls typically are coupled with rationing, are temporary, and are justified because government has diverted civilian production to military production. (Auto plants, for example, make tanks instead of cars.)
Outside of wartime planned economies, price controls interfere with market mechanisms that bring supply and demand into balance; and typically reduce supply below demand, leading to permanent or long-term supply shortages. This is Econ 101 and common knowledge.
Republican deregulation of residential mortgage lending led to the 2007-2008 crisis that brought homebuilding to a near-halt, resulting in a nationwide housing shortage that can only be resolved by a decrease in population, new construction in excess of population growth, or a combination of both. There is no quick fix, and bringing housing supply into balance with demand will take years.
In these circumstances, temporary rent control might be justified to prevent price-gouging by landlords, but the devil is in the details. The Washington bill is 23 pages long and complicated in its details (read it here). And, as they say, the devil is in the details.
From my quick perusal, it appears rent increases are capped for existing tenants, but landlords can adjust rents without limit on vacated units. If this reading is correct, it will have some tendency to reduce renter mobility by freezing tenants in place, because any tenant who moves will have to pay market rent in the new unit, instead of controlled rent in the existing rental.
Under this bill, rent control isn’t automatic. If a landlord violates the rent cap, the tenant must complain in writing and give the landlord an opportunity to cure, otherwise the rent cap is effectively waived. By requiring tenants to affirmatively act to claim the law’s benefits, the law won’t help passive tenants at all. This probably means many vulnerable tenants — the elderly, poor, and those unaware of the law — won’t get any benefit from the law.
The bill also exempts several types of rentals from its rent control provisions: Apartment buildings less than 12 years old; buildings owned by public housing agencies and nonprofit organizations, where rent increases are regulated by other laws; tenants in owner-occupied single family residences, duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes. Not exempted: Single family houses rented out by mom-and-pop landlords.
Another provision requires landlords to give tenants 90 days advance notice of rent increases. I didn’t take time to determine whether this applies only to rent-controlled units, but a quick reading suggests to me it applies to all renters.
There is a separate set of rules, with a lower rent increase cap, for mobile home parks.
The rent controls imposed by the bill aren’t permanent, in the sense they sunset or expire on July 1, 2040, unless extended by a future legislature, so you can argue this is a temporary measure for the time it takes for housing supply to catch up to demand. The general rent cap is 7% a year plus CPI, not to exceed 10%, which isn’t onerous during periods of normal inflation, so the bill mainly imposes an onerous paperwork burden on landlords in order to raise rent by any amount. Probably not enough to drive commercial landlords out of the business, but an additional hassle for mom-and-pop landlords that may take some rental rooms or SFRs off the market.
My overall impression is this bill won’t solve the housing shortage, will slow it down, and while it creates powerful tools to prevent rent-gouging, it creates new burdens on both landlords and tenants. Whether it will help or hurt Washington’s housing situation remains to be seen, but my guess one of its effects will be to marginally reduce the supply of rental housing. It could, for example, encourage owners to convert apartments to condos, and lead SFR landlords to sell rental houses that become unprofitable.
This is all leading to a SCOTUS decision that DOGE has no power to actually do anything and that all of their actions are invalid.
Judge Katsas, Appeals, DC Circuit, Former Trump White House Counsel, Trump appointee and rumored short lister for SCOTUS nomination casts the deciding vote that CFPB staff cannot be fired by the administration as the department was created and funded by Congress and only Congress can make cuts to the department. At least for now until appellate court review of the injunction.
Rao dissents. Rao also a Trump nominee famously argued that a President cannot be investigated by Congress outside formal impeachment (2019).
The pro life party budget axes the NARCAN distribution to first responders. A drop in the Federal Bucket at $56M, yes with an ‘M’, the widespread use of Narcan in response to overdose incidents is believed to be the primary driver of a 24% drop in overdose fatalities in the U.S. in 2024.

A hay exporter in central Washington that sends a large amount of its crop output to Hong Kong and mainland China was told to reroute most of the exports shipped in the past two weeks to Japan, Dubai, Taiwan, and a few Chinese ports. Those changes came at a cost to the company, which told the AgTC that “it’s not sustainable, no one can replace all the volume that China buys.”
The hay exporter said it immediately put a stop on all orders in process, and has begun layoffs.

It’s useful to understand that the cuts under consideration would not be made to the purchase of Narcan (the inhaled version of naxolone), but to the HHS unit that hands it out.
Narcan can easily be handed out by a different unit of HHS. Or grants can be made to states so that states may purchase it according to their individual needs. I think I read something about the DJT47 wanting to return power to the states. This would be an example of that policy goal.
Biggest losers: pencil-pushers at HHS. Learn to code, bitches.
Before the election Canada’s Conservative party had 120 seats. As of this writing they’re predicted to hold 152 seats.
The Liberal party will increase from 152 to (at present) 154.

Not in 2032.
Canada could meet its obligation sooner if it wasn’t blowing so much capital being duped by DJT47 about being the 51st US state.
@65 They only need armed canoes to defend half their border.
@50
That’s going to he useful when you can’t buy shit on Whidbey except some Finn River Cider because the ships aren’t coning.

There is an organization named CASA, Central American Solidarity Association. They are suing the Trump administration on behalf of Abrego Garcia.
There is also CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocates. They provide legal representation for minors removed from violent or sexually abusive homes.
The DOGE boys, probably on orders from Donald or more likely Stephen Miller ran a SQL query and illegally zeroed out funding for CASA.
Only one of those organizations gets grant money from the federal government. But of course we’re keeping the youth safe from the trans groomers…but not the CIS adult predators they used to live with.
Conservative leader, and once assumed PM Poliver likely loses his seat. Not called yet. Probably out of deference to his embarrassing position.
So in order to build chyrons for broadcast you have to have an idea what someone will say in advance of the interview. So what did Hannity Show know was Stephen Miller’s big accomplishments for Donnie in the first hundred?
• Declassified the JFK files
• Ended Federal Support for Paper Straws
• Ended Production of the Penny

Trump is a unique president, and as you would surmise, in a bad way:
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-tried-remake-america-first-100-days-rcna201224
Roger Rabbit Commentary: There’s constructive and destructive. Trump is destructive. Presidential power can be used for good or ill. Trump, laden with ill will, flaunts it for ill. Teddy Roosevelt called the presidency a “bully pulpit”; Trump is merely a bully. Electing him again likely will go down in history as one of the dumbest things American voters ever did.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-tried-remake-america-first-100-days-rcna201224
Trump is accomplishing the improbable: Make Biden look good.
When FBI agents, narcs, or cops go to the wrong house, and terrorize the innocent inhabitants, of course they should be able to sue. That should go without saying, and it shouldn’t need a SCOTUS decision to back up what is only common sense.
It also should go without saying that a mistake like that should end the law enforcement careers of the persons responsible, whether it’s a dispatcher, a supervisor, a team leader, or individual agent or officer.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-considers-lawsuit-arising-wrong-house-fbi-raid-rcna200461
But that’s not how things always work in America, and neither Trump nor GOP legislators nor anti-citizen justices will act to set it right.
As for where I stand, it’s a no-brainer that all forms of governmental and police immunity should be replaced by presumptive liability in cases like this. Cops conducting residential raids should be held strictly responsible for going to the right residence.
Note that in this case, the FBI has no protocols, procedures, or guidance to ensure its agents go to the right house. That, alone, should make the agency liable for such mistakes.
@54 Vimy Ridge is to Canadians, as Gallipoli is to Australians: These battles created a sense of nationhood. Today’s beliefs, attitudes, loyalties, politics, and cultures don’t exist in a vacuum; they’re shaped by the historical experiences of societies, reinforced by literature, movies, and popular culture.
A dumbfuck who never reads history won’t know that. Since you don’t know that, it’s reasonable to infer you don’t read history; and we already know from your countless other postings that you’re a dumbfuck. You keep proving it every day with posts like this one and your idiotic remark at #37.
If we have bad trolls, it’s not solely their fault, but also the fact there’s nothing good to be said about Republicans, who are wrong about everything. And now Republicans aren’t merely wrong, they’re also evil.
So it’s not possible to be a good troll, because if they weren’t bad and immoral people, they wouldn’t be Republicans. But even by Republican troll standards, which are very low, the dumbfuck doctor is an idiot.
In many cases of stupid people, we shouldn’t blame them for being stupid, because they can’t help having been born with low IQs. But Doctor Dumbfuck wasn’t born with a low IQ; he chooses to be a blockhead, and that makes him 100% culpable for his idiotic ravings.

The silliness of the Cheesehead Top Court in recent years has taken its toll. Some pushback against the idiots in lower courts might restore a bit of credibility.
One need only to look back on UPS news in the past few months to understand that UPS is cutting labor and locations because it’s not carrying Amazon packages for cheap the way it used to. Some business isn’t worth it.
That’s not DJT47’s fault. It’s a business decision not to continue as Amazon’s delivery lap dog.
Democrats go to the mattresses for a POS wife-beating gang-banging illegal alien.
Donald Trump lives rent-free in Canada’s brain.
Come to think of it, he lives rent-free in the White House, too.
@114 Standard procedure. Doesn’t imply the judge did anything wrong.
@116 Those accusations should be litigated in court with the accused present, don’t you think? And if it’s shown by evidence to be true, then DHS can deport him, but not to El Salvador.
It’s called due process, dumbfuck. Way over your head.
@98 Why didn’t they just search the premises for the illegal immigrant they were looking for, check the residents’ IDs, then leave?
Even if they had a valid search warrant, I don’t understand why they took the citizen’s money. That turns it into armed robbery.
If DHS goes around terrorizing law-abiding citizens, maybe they should be designated a terrorist organization.
Dumbfuck’s amplifying random Twatters again
Custody disputes often include unfounded allegations. It’s positively shocking a guy who’s involved in a divorce would make a claim against the man his soon to be ex-wife is fucking. Horses don’t talk so you’re fine.
Posts that disn’t age well:
NDP and Liberal is enough. Add in the one green and if BQ wants to get anything out of the next couple years and you’ve got the Conservative party isolated and relegated to complete irrelevance.

She claims a third of America’s population would be dead if she and Trump hadn’t intercepted 22 million pills, each of which would have killed 5.409091 people.
