MoveOn.org co-founder Joan Blades and environmental activist and feminist author Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner will be at Town Hall tonight plugging their new book, The Motherhood Manifesto, and kicking off MomsRising.org, a grassroots movement to get women more active in changing legislative and workplace policies regarding women and families. (Lynn has some more info over at Evergreen Politics.)
Tickets are $5 at the door, Town Hall, 8th & Seneca, 7:30 PM. Kids are both welcome and free, so bring the whole family.
I intend to be there, and hope to bump into Mr. Rowe-Finkbeiner to wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors, and to thank him for supporting his wife in hers.

Gee, I don’t know what planet you are living on, but there was nothing stupid about the comment.
In the first place, the “economic recovery” is relative. The economy has been down so long, it has taken a long time to get back to where it was before Bush took office. I wonder how long I could keep my job as a manager if my department showed lousy results for six years, and I argued that the last couple of months it finally was improving a bit?
Secondly, this “economic recovery” isn’t reaching the middle class, unless you say that we aren’t losing jobs quite as quickly as we might have been otherwise. Few middle-class workers have any illusions that their employer has any loyalty to them, or that they will still be working at the same company five years from now. Pay raises have been anemic – lower class workers only get a pay raise when the minimum wage is raised, and the true middle-class (both blue and white-collar) has been lucky if they get the equivilant of “cost of living” increases.
My wife and I just did the math – we both have been working for the same firms for over ten years, our raises have NOT kept pace with inflation, and at our annual reviews we are told that we are great and valued employees, but times are tough and we should be happy that they haven’t shipped our jobs offshore – yet.
The only people who seem to be reaping the benefits of this “economic recovery” are the ones at the very top – corporate officials, lobbyists, etc. Even the Republicans aren’t bothering to argue the “trickle down” theory anymore, because its obvious it doesn’t work. (Explantion of the trickle-down theory: the government takes money from the middle class, gives it to the rich, and then requires the middle class and the poor to work for the rich to get a much smaller portion of the money back). Instead of using the “trickle down” theory, they are now just resorting to a stick-up: “Give us what we want (tax credits, lowered tax rates, subsidies, no-bid contracts) or we close shop here and ship your job off to India!”

The economic indicators that everybody has always used to determine a healthy economy and prosperity were sliding quite a while before the 2000 election. Bush inherited an economic downturn from Clinton, he addressed the problems and we are now seeing the end product as a thriving economy with low unemployment in spite of outside forces that might tend to drive it down, like oil prices (gee, where’s all that free Iraqi oil we went over there to ‘steal’?) and rising interest rates. That said, if one were to be honest they would admit that the President has very little to do with how the economy goes. It’s fluctuated on the tide of economic forces irrespective of what party had control of any part of the government. I don’t believe that Bush had much to do with this really good economy any more than I thought Clinton had to do with the 90’s economy — and anybody who does I believe to be rather ignorant of economics or a simple political hack.

Let me show you with your own numbers what I’ve been saying all along. By no means am I validating the accuracy of your numbers but it paints the same picture.
JAN 20005 OREILLY 2.3 OLBERMANN 0.3 RATING
MARCH TO APRIL 2006 O REILLY 1.8 OLBERMANN 0.4
Let’s do the math problem together, OK?
If Bill had a 2.3 share in Jan ’05 and a 1.8 share a year later, did he gain viewers or lose them? Right. He lost viewers. But, how many did he lose as a percentage of his audience?
OK, here’s how you solve the equation. Since the ’05 rating number is larger than the ’06 rating for Bill, he lost viewers. So, we have to do a “take away” problem, right? To solve you have to subtract the Jan ’05 number from the Jan ’06 number.
All right it looks like this: 2.3-1.8 = .5 loss in viewer ship. That’s about a 22% reduction in the number of viewers.
Now for Keith.
His Jan 05 number is SMALLER than his 06 number, so that means he ADDED viewers, right? How many as a percentage?
So here we are going to do another “take away” problem, but this time we’re going to subtract the Jan ’05 number form the Jan ’06 number.
It looks like this: .4 -.3 = .1 gain in viewers, or about a 33% increase over the Jan ’05 number.
To recap using your numbers:
Bill O’Reilly lost about 22% of his viewers while,
Keith Olbermann gained gained about 33% more viewers.
Now, while it’s true Bill has way more viewers, this type of year over year negative downward trend is noticed by advertisers. The same is true of Keith. The smaller number of viewers is very important to advertisers, but they also see the positive upward trend moving in the right direction for Keith’s show.
OK, I know that was a lot for a man who cannot spell “LIAR” but I hope that I’ve some how contributed to the growth of your little mind.
